5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Brutality.
Life is hard and difficult.Unfortunately, for many people in the world life is also unbearably brutal.Living in the United States we often forget that, even if we grew up in impoverished small towns or in the slums of the inner city.CITY OF GOD is a film that examines the brutality of humanity in a housing project that is part of Rio de Janeiro.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a movie, but also a Social Project
The movie was shot in one of the "favelas" in Rio de Janeiro, my home town... I used to drive by it all the time when going to the beach.
4-0 out of 5 stars Life doesn't come with any guarentees
Intertwining the stories of various youths growing up in the slummy Rio de Janeiro suburb called the City of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting & memorable
I grew up during the Cold War when the USSR was the personfication of Evil and anybody left of Reagan was suspect.Listening to the nightly news, history books, and political pundits, one would think that Che Guevara was the Hammer of Evil; however, as I have learned since then, life is much more complicated than what was painted for me then.
5-0 out of 5 stars A quiet and above all...."nice" film
I got a confession to make: like a previous reviewer said about his friend, I too didn't connect the main character of the film with the controversial communist revolutionary Che Guevara. While his last name is mentioned a couple times and Che, not once did it occur to me that it meaning him. In reflecting on the film, it had a different resonance. Instead of being a road trip movie about things that change your life, it ended up becoming a look into a life who had enough with things and wanted change. Sure we can disagree with the methods but it's quite a look into a famous leader's backstory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad...
..I guess my problem is I read the book in 1980... and ever since then I've waited for them to make a movie of the book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Problematic Violence
When told that the Bible (a book the hero of this film reads often) counsels forgiveness, John Creasy replies blandly (something like), "Forgiveness: That's between a man and his maker; it's my job to arrange the meeting." A great line, but it points to what disturbs me about this film: its glorification of justice meted out by one man operating outside the law. First the film sentiimentalizes the character of Creasy; then just as we come to like him, we watch him brutally torture one character after another (in ways that really do not bear repeating here). Is this the moral center of this film?
5-0 out of 5 stars Do you want some JUSTICE!!! Watch this!!!!
I loved this movie so much that i had to buy the book and guess what! the book is even better. The book is different but it's as good as the movie. Denzel is inspiring and his relationship with the girl as a bodyguard is beautiful because it seems that she took him out of the dark side of life. This makes the story and his anger becomes much more intense and truthfull. It is violent but in the right way. Not too much, just enough!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!
I saw this little jewel of a movie on the Independent Film Channel. I read the synapseses for the movie, but I was stil somewhat ambivilant about it. Once I started watching it, I quickly realized that this movie was special. The acting, direction, storyline, scripting, all of it was outstanding. I cannot say enough about this movie. Well worth a look if you are
4-0 out of 5 stars Humorous And Serious
Y Tu Mama Tambien, although filled with sex and vulgarity, is a sweet comedy with serious intent. The film may promise more than it can deliver, and it never delves very deeply into the adolescent psyche, but it does provide almost two hours of solid enjoyment, laughter, and heartbreak. The unrated edition is wildly erotic and requires an open mind about profanity, nudity, and sex, or at least a modern sensibility toward these subjects, to be enjoyed. The movie is humorous and serious at the same time, a lighthearted, risqué romp with dramatic overtones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Revealing
This movie is a peek into the lives of two boys...we get to watch them for one summer through all of the drama that happens. It's very explicit.Another word I can think of to describe it is "raw."It's funny at times, sexy at times, sad at times, etc. It's just very interesting to sit on the sidelines, watching all of these events that happen one summer shape the lives of two boys, and not be able to affect them in any way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mexican culture, for real
AMORES PERROS is one of the most ouststanding achievents for mexican cinema since it captivates a realistic portrait on personal relationships and life itself in our frequently misunderstood country.
1-0 out of 5 stars So what?
This may be "how Mexico really is," but its not a good movie. After reading all the great reviews I was expecting much more. But like 21 Grams, it is just a movie about people you don't really care about because you don't get to know them well enough. You feel like a voyeur on other people's miserable lives and you never get inside their heads enough to really care. Its like watching a sit com, just splashed all over a big screen. There is too much violence without a point. The acting is good but the stories are blah, especially the middle one, and the themes are not developed very well. Its too much "film-making" without anough story. The style doesn't hook into the story and there is very little emotion generated. I simply didn't care, and I would never want to see it again.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, gritty film
To some of the reviewers who thought the film makers actually harmed the dogs in the fight sequences: if the legal disclaimer and press are to be believed, no animals were actually harmed in the making of this film (hence PETA wasn't that up in arms over it). Kudos to the film's special effects crew for offending so many viewer sensibilities. In fact, there's an anti animal cruelty undertone here to complement the anti human cruelty one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A heart-warming show injected with tons of humor and personality
Cidade dos Homens is one of those shows that breaks your heart and at the same makes you feel like there's hope for some of the world's poorest people, os favelados in Brasil.
4-0 out of 5 stars very pleasing
I have to admit I didn't enjoy this show as much as I thought I would. I'm not denying that the fact that Douglas Silva and Darlan Cunha possess true talent; it's just that the show can get quite silly at times. All in all,it's an interesting view of life in Brazil. There is no false glamour about this series; everything is presented in a very direct manner. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrid
Get together with some friends and as many bottles of wine. That way you can possibly have some enjoyment with this inexplicable and boring movie. *special award* for expressionless characters.*special award* for interminable shots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing? yes.Riveting? yes.
I honestly had no clue what to think after first viewing this film.It begins and ends with graphic sex scenes, and the moral tone is ambiguous at best. After all, our two main characters are a middle-aged kidnapper and a rich girl who sells herself for kicks. At times the pacing is tedious, and it's difficult to tell what the characters are feeling because the range of emotions they display is minimal.Despite all this, I found the whole thing fascinating, and when it was over greatly enjoyed watching it again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ambivalent
In between the poignant sex scenes between two obese amateur thespians (as husband and wife) and between the protagonist (Marcos Hernández), and the attractive hooker (Anapola Mushkadiz) - who so happens to be the daughter of a military official he works for, there are some scenes of deep confusion and contemplation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch your step
Who cares about the simple plot of this movie? Loss of a marriage and the attraction of an older man to a younger woman (ho hum, yawn).
5-0 out of 5 stars Dancing with Attitude
I've been watching a few older dance movies lately. The Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers and Busby Berkeley type of movies have been interesting but the plot often comes across so simple or so impossible that I had to remind myself to just ignore that and enjoy the dancing. For the most part, the dancing was good enough to be able to ignore the lack of any serious plot.In "Tango" the dance sequences are outstanding and the story is worth paying attention to as well.I'm not sure that the plot would have justified a movie without the dance routines. However, it interfaced well with the dancing and resulted in a reality/fantasy mix that kept us on our toes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vibrant and sensational!!
This movie is 'art' on the big screen... just lovely. So vibrant, colorful and passionate. The music, the scenes, the stage set, the story are all magnificent. The stage design and setting are remarkable and every scene in itself could create a perfect photograh. A masterpiece! A movie every tango lover must watch!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Honesty is such a lonely word
Unlike the website's review, I really enjoyed these characters making the best of an imperfect situation. When lies get baked in the cake, inextricable because they occurred in the past and there's no atonement for them, or because social convention prohibits it, then sometimes a second-best solution is the best one available.I thought the storyline believable and entertaining.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie!!
La Mujer de Mi Hermano has to be one of the best movies of the year. It should have won an Oscar. The story line is excellent, the acting is excellent, it has twists that you wouldn't imagine. I recommend this movie to everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Bold and Beautiful
Barely a step above a Soap Opera, "La Mujer de Mi Hermano" lacks the weight and sincerity to support its heavy duty themes of child molestation and latent homosexuality. Bewilderingly, these major themes are raised by the characters and just as bewilderingly dropped: neither explained nor resolved.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bunuel's Viridiana
Viridiana is Luis Bunuel's 1961 Palme d'Or-winning picture. Many claim the film to be an allegory for the way in which Francisco Franco "seduced" the Spanish-working class and Roman Catholic Church to join him during the Spanish Civil War. Seeing as the feature was released during the reign of the notorious Spanish dictator and quite disparaging of Catholicism, it is no shocker that, upon completion and submission into the Cannes Film Festival, Franco's government banned the film and attempted to withdraw it from circulation. The Vatican even went as far as denouncing the picture.
2-0 out of 5 stars Did Bunuel know any poor people?
This movie draws you in. There's no doubt about it. But you soon sense that something is wrong. And what that is is both a sense of impending and overwhelming evil and a gross caricature of the poor. Apparently Bunuel imagined himself as a realist in assessing human nature as essentially corrupt and irreformable. But this is simply not true, as anyone who has worked with the poor and suffering can tell you. Yes, the lives of the suffering can be turned around with charity, especially charity informed by faith in Christ. I've seen it myself many times.
3-0 out of 5 stars Luis Buñuel's controversial masterpiece
This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

Editorial Review

Marcel Camus's 1959 update of the Greek myth features an all-black cast and a story set in the frenetic energy of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Orpheus, a trolley car conductor and superb samba dancer, is engaged to Mira but in love with Eurydice. For his change of heart, Orpheus and his new doomed lover are pursued by a vengeful Mira and a determined Death through the feverish Carnival night. Camus at once demystifies and remystifies the old story, shifting not only its location but its tone and context, forcing a reevaluation of the legend as a more passionate, pulsing, sensual experience. The film is really one-of-a-kind, an absolute whirl that barely needs words. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Original
Greek mythology was something I've never paid much attention to. Having said that, I knew nothing about the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It wasn't until I got this from the library (after noticing it had won the Palme d'or at The Cannes Film Festival and had won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film) and read the little booklet included in The Criterion release that I found out about the whole story. Needless to say, I found the whole idea intriguing. The filmmakers took this Greek myth and transferred it to Rio de Janeiro in the middle of Carnival and, in doing so, created a colorful and beautiful movie. That's not to say Black Orpheus is a very entertaining film, but the lush scenery and music make it a masterpiece. The story is pretty simple; Eurydice has arrived in Rio to stay with her cousin Serafina. Eurydice is running from a masked man (Death) and is in a frequent state of fear. When she gets onto a streetcar, she meets Orpheus; Orpheus is a streetcar operator and a ladies man who has just become engaged to Mira. When they're getting a license, the man jokes to Mira..."Let me guess. You're Eurydice." Orpheus, is popular around his community for his musical talent. It's said that when he plays his guitar and sings, he makes the sun rise. Anyway, the story is a Greek "tragedy" so you can guess that the love between Orpheus and Eurydice doesn't quite go as planned. The film's tragic ending is quickly lifted by a beautifully photographed scene. This movie is, technically, a love story...But the Orpheus-Eurydice is merely the foundation of the story. It's the music and art direction and cinematography that makes this so good. The music, especially, plays a huge part in the film. The look of the movie gets even better when you realize how long ago it was made. Look at the film "Some Like it Hot" (released the same year, 1959) and then look at this film. This movie will not entertain the masses for years to come, but movie/Greek mythology buffs might want to check it out. Or just people who appreciate beauty in film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Poetically beautiful
This movie is worth buying and watching over and over, the passion is felt between the characters and the setting. I just love the movie and it takes you to another world, another era.
5-0 out of 5 stars Five star slop job!
I hated this movie because it had no nudity...and bossa nostra music annoys me. If you wanna see nekkid girls, don't watch this movie. Mind you, I only watched the first 3 minutes before I figured I needed something more substantial...a TRUE masterpiece like "Back To The Beach". Buy THAT movie instead of 'Black Orpheus' because at least you get Frankie Avalon and Annette FunnyChello and PeeWee Herman. I just flicked through "Black O" and watched the first 5 seconds of each chapter but that was enough to tell me that this movie stinks.

I was fotunate to see this movie with Ms. Braga and director at the Miami Film Festival last February.Gritty? yes if you grew up in suburban America behind a mall. The real streets of Salvador are alot more dangerous when not being filmed. The sexual tension was maintained to the point of making many in the audience squirm in their seats.

Though Sonia Braga's niece, Alice Braga generates a lot of heat, "Lower City" as a whole tends to shrink away from her innate sexuality and screen presence.

Trying to conceive of a "Left Behind" style film happening to a specific race in a specific State is pretty out there. But director Sergio Arau does so admirably in A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN.
1-0 out of 5 stars A day without an anglo
I'm sorry but this movie is so insulting to non-Latinos. The premise is annoying.I've lived in California since the 70's and believe me, it did run before 10 million Mexicans came here.I realize I'm not commenting on the merits of the film, but oh well...

5-0 out of 5 stars SPIRITUAL ECSTASY AND SEXUAL PASSION
The release of the film THE CRIME OF PADRE AMARO caused about as much of an uproar in Mexico in 2002 as the publication of the novel, written by Jose Maria Eca de Queiroz, caused in 1875.With its dangerously intertwining themes of spiritual ecstasy and sexual passion, it's not hard to see why. At the heart of the story is a young priest who wrestles in a major way with the tempting hungers of his body and the grace-filled yearnings of his spirit. It does not help that, to pursue his vocation, he is sent to a town sustained by a culture of corruption.

2-0 out of 5 stars missed opportunity
A film set around a few spooky moments, but in the end unchallenging in its script or situation. The opening monologue that questions the nature of ghosts seems more of a trick to sound philiosphical than to really delve into the nature of ghosts--the Dedvil's Backbone holds a lot of promise in its preview, but carries very little of it out in its execution. A more daring script would have brought a lot more to the whole ball of wax.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GHOST STORY: STUNNING VISUALS!
First of all, "The Devil's Backbone," is a Spanish film with subtitles. Therefore, if you don't mind subtitled films [I prefer many of them to so-called American horror films] then you will like this film. I knew I was going to like it from the narration in the beginning of the film, and the stunning visuals that accompany it. The surrealistic and ghostly images, and especially the nuances that are in the film are terrific. This is a film that is more of a drama with the horror placed in it. However, the horror is more intelligently done than many films of the genre. The film itself takes place during the Spanish Civl War [1939] at an orphanage for children [boys] whose father's have been killed-in-action. And in a twist, the ghost is the main protagonist in the film.
4-0 out of 5 stars A mixture of horror , fantasy , war and melodrama ( you should taste it )
Plays like a Roman Polanski / Dario Argento film. It contains a great story that was translated to the screen with a stunning visual style and a blessed -special- cast and crew. The editing is the star in this fresh and witty film. There are plenty of good scares that will satisfy horror fans.See it if you loved DUMBO(just kiddin,) or THE 6TH SENSE and THE OTHERS(and that is for sure)or whatever .The best Del Toro film yet. ... Editorial Review

Quite simply a great movie, one whose implacable portrait of ruthless greed and insane ambition becomes more pertinent every year. The astonishing Klaus Kinski plays Don Lope de Aguirre, a brutal conquistador who leads his soldiers into the Amazon jungle in an obsessive quest for gold. The story is of the expedition's relentless degeneration into brutality and despair, but the movie is much more than its plot. Director Werner Herzog strove, whenever possible, to replicate the historical circumstances of the conquistadors, and the sheer human effort of traveling through the dense mountains and valleys of Brazil in armor creates a palpable sense of struggle and derangement. This sense of reality, combined with Kinski's intensely furious performance, makes Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More artistic than historic.
Called "A breathtaking journey into the heart of darkness."
3-0 out of 5 stars Hard Work Film
This is the best and the worst film I've ever seen in my life. It has a certain artful and dreamlike quality to it that is truly hypnotic, which is both good and bad. I found it hard to keep my mind on the film, as it drags by very slowly, however, I was fully drawn back in, like waking from a deep sleep, as the last few minutes of the film rolled in. These last moments are jaw dropping and make the whole painful experience of getting through the film entirely worth it. Enjoy, if you dare.

3-0 out of 5 stars More is better
First I want to say that I had enjoyed seen Corazón Salvaje again but I'm also sure that it could be better.Although all the essentials of the main plot are there, all the sub-plots were cut. Also many of important scenes of the main story were eliminated.I understand that to make a 270hrs. DVD of a soap opera that lasted around 8 months require a lot of editing, but this is one of the best soaps I have seen, and trust me I seen plenty. Now that the actor that played Juan del Diablo (Eduardo Palomo) passed away I was hoping for the real thing.I am sure that a real fan will pay up to $40 or $50 for the original version that, if I remember correctly consisted of 5 VHS tapes of 2hrs or more each.So like I said, although I have enjoyed this version, I will be on the look out hoping for the original.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for the Warnings
I was so excited to see that these novelas were on dvd now. As I read all the reviews I was informed that they are not the complete novelas. I'm so disappointed. I will not be buying these dvd's thanks to the reviews. I would rather wait and hopefully get to see the day when we can have the whole novelas on dvd, even if it has to be a two or three dvd box set. They are well worth it. Until then I will keep my fond childhood memories of them and keep hoping.Thank you all for taking the time to do the reviews. I hope someone in Televisa can get their heads together and make this happen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way too short
While this abridgement provides the core, it misses a couple of major subplots and all of the subtleties of this classic love story. There is a reason that this story has been done five times for its audience (once on radio, once as a feature film, and three times as a TV series) and while I don't know how the story changed between all the versions, the 1993 series edited down to this DVD is regarded as a major classic by critics of the genre.I do hope that Televisa considers issuing a longer version (not less than 20 hours) that includes the humorous moments and the delicious catfight between Aimee and Sofia.

5-0 out of 5 stars All That Love
After watching "Son of the Bride" I found myself making comparisons to the movie "All that Jazz" which I had seen again recently. In both movies, we follow a middle-aged divorcee as he struggles in his stressful job, juggling his personal life around a young girl friend and his responsibilities to look after a young adolescent daughter.Chain-smoking as he struggles to maintain his focus, interacting out of necessity with his ex-wife, the stress builds itself up to a heart attack. It is from that point that the movies finish in different directions. While "All that Jazz" becomes a look, with regret, to the past, "Son of the Bride" becomes a look, with hope, to the future.
5-0 out of 5 stars Human and
How easy is to put aside what give us life, how easy is to fall into "reality". This movie is about the importance of recovering what we've lost in the past for being "somebody". Our whole life can change in five seconds, but it seems that we always deny this fact. When watching this movie you'll remember that we are the products of a not-so-good social machinery. Highly recommended for those who love life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life is what you choose to make of it
Watching this movie, I couldn't help but cry. It is not hard to identify with Rafael, this guy who is so submerged in his the world of his business, that he doesn't have enough time to give to others around him (his mother/father, his girlfriend, his daughter from a marriage that also failed due to the same thing...) It's sad to realize how many of us fall in this category, where a business meeting can take precedence over those, more important things in one's life, but it happens. And Ricardo Darn (Marco from "Nine Queens") does a magnificent job at playing the part in this movie.
