3-0 out of 5 stars Did I Just Watch a Video Game?
This is an action packed thrill ride of a movie, but after a while it started to feel like I was watching somebody playing a video game. Our emotional attachment to the characters is remote and after awhile the killing becomesrepetitive.Personally, I would rather play a video game than watch this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nightmare come true or an astonishing film? May be both.
Although the setting of the story is a little bit overstretched in terms of reality (a whole class of teenagers is punished to take the "Battle Royale" course of self-extermination in futuristic Japan) the result is a very powerful film which presents the feelings and behavior of ordinary youths put under extreme stress in a fascinating way. There is a profusion of blood and brutal violence in some scenes but the film is so terrific that fixes you in your seat. Expect a big surprise in the finale!

5-0 out of 5 stars SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS WERE NEVER THIS ROUGH!
"Battle Royale" is a truly magnificant film, and is highly recommended. There are a bountiful number of reviews here, therefore, I would just like to add that if you have not seen the film, buy it or rent it. I first saw the film a few years ago at the urging of a friend and was not disappointed in the least.

2-0 out of 5 stars it was ok....but the guys could've been hotter..
I understand the low budget...stuff like that happens, but the voices didnt match. The mothers voice didnt seem real at all. It sounded like it was from a child. No way would an older woman's voice sounds like that. I like it how Devon's character has to understand his new and emerging feelings, and realize that he's not the only one that feels that way. It's nice to know that his soon to be ex-girlfriend is the understanding type. She's even involved in the end when it comes to uncovering the truth about Devon's step-dad. That's a true friend.
1-0 out of 5 stars make it stop.... PLEASE......!!!!
uhmm....yah... this is a low budget "film", but low budget doesnt mean it has to suck.i've seen tons of low budget films that were absolutely beautiful pieces of art.it's impossible to even figure out where to start in reviewing Sideline Secrets; for even untrained actors this is bad, it seemed that the voices were completely dubbed like in an old japanese movie, and i think i even saw someone moving in the background in the supposedly tense office scene when there wasn't supposed to be someone in the backgroung.i will give whomever a tiny bit of credit though for turning a livingroom & a garage into what was supposed to be a club - and at the end of the home movie, i was pleasantly surprised to see the gogo dancer was actually attractive (quite so too!) as opposed to the rest of the young cast in this trying ever-so-hard to be a soft-core porn\thriller.in all seriousness, this thing gave me a horrible migraine.if you are stupid enough to actually buy this (thankfully my roommate rented it) invest in either a bottle of Advil or a sledge hammer - you'll want to use both on your head after the first 20 mins....

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute and well done
I think a lot of people might say this is a bad movie, but knowing this is a low budget film and having limited resources, this movie is pretty good. I got this video a few days ago, and I have watched it 4 or 5 times in 2 days a;ready. Obviously something in this movie got my attention, and no, it was not the sex scenes or nudity although they were pretty well done. The film definitely has a good story, so I am totally recommending seeing it at least once. You just have to take into account that this movie doesn't have the budget or resources of a blockbuster movie. A lot of people are pretty incompetant when it comes to watching smaller low-budget films. They dont see some huge explosions or special effects and they automatically label a film as being boring, or terrible. Don't fall for that. This is a nice endeavor with a lot of potential. See if you can find the hidden references to several pop culture itesm-- madonna, twin peaks, cher, gilmore girls, and more. Very cute and well done. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Rough picture transfer but not totally trash either.
I believe this is one of the best documentaries on film ever made. This is one of my all time favorite documentary films. I think Leni Riefenstahl was one of the most innovative female movie directors to ever put a film on celluloid. She ranks up there with all the great movie directors- D W Griffith, Abel Gance, Cecil B Demille, Orson Welles etc. It's also true that she was Adolph Hitlers favorite film director and the only one that he wanted when he wanted his propoganda films made. Her most popular films such as "Triumph Of The Will", and "Olympia" are her best films. Olympia is an eye popping unbelievable film. It starts with a montage of different sights of Greece- The Acropolis etc. Then you see beautiful statues of men and women. Then with some beautiful editing she blends from a male statue into a very muscular male human. She shows men and women (some nudity) in different stages of posing and exorcising to show the beauty of the human form. It sounds like it's not for children, but it is done with such good taste that with adult supervision it is not at all offensive. Now for the film quality. The quality of the film is not good, but it is definitely not unwatchable. It is dull, faded, showsmany scratches and artifacts and at times is shakey. It has definitely not been restored or remastered although some people may not be bothered by this because ,let's face it, this film was made in 1936 and some may say it should be allowed to age gracefully. It is however the complete German version. You get a choice of the original German language with English subtitles, or optional English language. This set of 2 dvds also includes many bonus features such as a deleted scene, alternate scenes from an Italian version of Olympia (which has much better picture quality than the German version), still gallery, 2 documenties , biography, and an essay. These bonus features (especially the 2 rare documentaries) save the film from being a total loss. So if you like this film and want it in your collection, you will get a just passable transfer of the film in its complete German version, along with some good bonus features. With some reservations I will still recommend this dvd.

5-0 out of 5 stars About time...
This film is an absoulute work of art! I am no fan of olympics but I can watch this. Anyone familiar with Frau Riefenstahl can apreciate the groundbreaking techniques used to shoot this. An extraordinary film by an extraordinary woman. The transfer may not be the best but this is a trivial complaint!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cruddy video transfer
The words 'digitally remastered' do not appear on this package anywhere. It looks as if they have merely reused an old VHS-era transfer and packaged it in a 'limited edition'. The picture and soundtrack both contain a huge amount of video noise and the source print is jittery and grainy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to watch
Red Lantern is a carefully crafted story centered around a young woman named Songlian, played by the ever-brilliant Gong Li. Songlian's hopes and dreams of college and a better life are cruelly cut short by the sudden and unexpected death of her father. With no money for school and at the insistence of her mother, Songlian is forced to marry Chen, a wealthy landowner who already has three wives of his own. Each of the wives reside in separate wings of his centuries-old castle estate. The living quarters are extremely upscale and come complete with a personal servant and maid. But, like the storied bird in the gilded cage, their lives are sad, empty and lonely.
1-0 out of 5 stars The Quality to DVD is Appalling!
Raise the Red Lantern is a wonderful movie with a great story. When I had heard that this movie was going to be transfered to DVD format, I was thrilled. And then I bought the DVD, and to my dismay, within the first couple of minutes into the movie, there were white lines and distortion. Since I loved the movie so much, I thought I would make an exception for the first few minutes, but as the movie continued, so did the white lines.I could not believe what I was seeing. The DVD copy of this movie, reminded me of the old movies I use to see years ago, when there were only 7 channels on TV.
1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible transfer quality!
UGH!Yet another disaster!I REALLY hoped this would be a bettter transfer than Ju Dou, but alas I am not satisfied!I am already 2 minutes into the dialogue and thinking "oh my gosh, do I really have to sit through this cr*p again??"Terrible subtitles also...erghhhhh...and I LOVE Gong Li.What a shame.I guess one can watch it KNOWING it's going to be bad quality ahead of time...I just really wasn't expecting it.I'm going to go watch it as I'm sure it's going to be great acting. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sexiest and Great Moive
Bad Girls Doing Bad Things features Jana Cova, August Arroya and Teanna Kai.A sweet girl learns to let the nasty side of her personality come out in this erotic drama for adults only. Karen is a nice young woman who works at a bookstore. However, Karen is a bit too nice for the tastes of her boyfriend Keith, who has a rougher idea of a good time than she does. Karen tries to convince Keith she's not a stick-in-the mud by tagging along for a night out with his buddies, but when that doesn't do well, she turns to some bone-fide bad girls for advice on living on the wild side.Vieweres will not be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars I got this one because of the cover photo...
I'm a sucker for two beautiful girls doing bad things together, and that cover photo promised at least one hot lesbian encounter on this video. And, in actuality, there were TWO girl/girl scenes.Sadly, neither one of them was particularly good.

4-0 out of 5 stars What the...?
It is difficult to review such a strange film, but one needs a preface before seeing it. Un Chien Andalou is a surrealist film worked on by Salvador Dali. There is no real plot and the occurances in the film are impossible and hard to follow since none of them seem to be connected. There is an underlying message though, fear. Most of the events reflect the fears of many people from one's eye being cut with a straight razor, being shot, being raped, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ten Years Later...
WOW! Where do I start with this one? Here is an absolutely brilliantly realized film that doesn't even try to follow a coherent plot. It's the most insane film I've ever seen, and I loved every second of it. It's tough not to look past the images for what they are, though, because your mind tries to fill in the blanks and write its own story. Scenes will change their mood suddenly and without reason, creating an utterly shocking experience. I was surprised to see such sophisticated technique in such an unstructured film. Un Chien Andalou is a masterpiece of the absurd, and I strongly suggest anyone with a taste for the weird see it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Extreme, Bizzare, Fun,
This is the Granddaddy of all expermental avant-garde films. It is a must for all film-buffs. And, it will definitly make you say HUH????

5-0 out of 5 stars A easy way to learn this fancy dance
I like this DVD, it's very easy to follow, you can surf the chapters very easy through the DVD menu. It has 10 Chapters and it goes from the easy ones to the hard one. I buy it for my wedding because we need to practice it and it was wonderfull. If you are thinking to buy it, make sure first to have a big space for dance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Argentine tango
In this DVD, Fabian Salas' demonstration of the basic movements of the Argentine tango is clear and easy-to-follow. It's a great way to learn on your own, or to practice what you're learning in a beginning Argentine tango class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfectly produced instructional
This DVD does everything correctly. It starts with good simple exercises, explains them completely with excellent close-up camera work all the time.No dead time with just talking. It's all dancing - a full hours worth - with clear running explanation of what you are watching. Highly recommend - The Tango Fundamentals.

5-0 out of 5 stars reviving a forgotten war
In the world's memory the Soviet-Finnish war from 1939-'40 has been pretty snowed under by dramatic events following soon afterwards-in more vital parts of Europe.
4-0 out of 5 stars The war is dreadful
it is the business of the artist to follow it home to the heart of the individual fighters-not to talk in armies and nations and numbers-but to track it home.D.H. Lawrence
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Historically Accurate Flik
This movie is about as accurate a depiction of a historical event as you are going to find.Despite what Mr. Kessel has to say, the portrayals of the Soviet soldiers as "cardboard cutouts" are authentic. That is exactly the way the war was fought in Karelia. The Soviet troops advanced in human waves, utterly indifferent to casualties. Some Finnish soldiers collapsed from physical and psychological exhaustion after inflicting such horrendous casualties on the Russians in just one day of battle. There were even instances of Russian soldiers being forced to link arms and set off across mine fields to clear them for the next wave of troops to come through. As for the Mannerheim Line: Check your facts Sir.The Mannerheim line did not get breeched until mid-February 1940 after two and a half months of relentless artillery and air bombardment and that with the Finns short of ammunition and anti-tank weapons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astrology and Science Together at Last
QUANTUM ASTROLOGY
5-0 out of 5 stars I finally understand astrology!
I've studied metaphysics for years, but astrology seemed alien to me for some reason. Though this DVD wasn't a specific "how to" or a long definition of astrology, I finally understand how it works. The information was clear and easy to understand. The diagrams were very helpful in reinforcing the message. And like another reviewer, I was glued to the screen. It gave me a lot to think about, for the past, future, and the present. I highly recommend it, especially if astrology seems interesting yet fuzzy to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will be awestruck !
Rick Levine's idea to put his exquisite astrological knowledge on this DVD is a proof of what love for this science means. Not only that you will be thrilled about it, but you will feel the urge to share this discovery with your friends. I do not think that I will exaggerate one bit if I will call it "breath-taking" (you will forget to breathe while watching it !) but also a breakthrough into understanding astrology by people who only read horoscopes ! What about the professional astrologers ? I only hope that instead of manifesting envy they will profess awe. Buy it, treasure it, share it. Thank you, Rick, for your love and art. We've been blessed to have you as a generation kin(g). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ambient Art: Impressionist Art Gallery...delightful
I enjoy images...and viewing them in different ways...and this DVD, Ambient Art really provides that experience.350 paintings that can be viewed as a slide show or as a movie (image is scanned) and with either classical music or a more contemporary music. It is so good for me...I wish Ambient art would do a disc on Grandma Moses, one on Maxfield Parrish and one on Thomas Hart Benton...so we would also have some American images available.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ambient Art/Impressionist Series
This was a housewarming gift and it was very well received. The choice of a narrator or classical music to go along with the paintings is an added bonus.I would defintatly recommed this to anyone who has a large screen TV or who needs a really unique gift. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars If interested to learn sensual massage techniques
The voice of the narrator is a little slow-monotonous, but the techniques for massage are unique. Nudes are beautiful, and the best is in the very last part of the movie, when the masseur performs an interesting sensual-erotic massage, which I had never heard about, before. This last 10-15 minutes worth the whole movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy This because of AMANDA AUCLAIR
Amanda Auclair is by far one of the most beautiful and sexy woman you will ever see in any film. Even though she is not listed as the star she has as much screen time as any one in the DVD. She is super hot in three scenes, two are with guys one with a girl. The first scene is worth the price of the DVD alone. The second has her in a mask but still is hot. If you like any of the Torchlight releases you can not go wrong with this, a must have for any Amanda Auclair fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic
The last time I saw this film, it was on a projector in 3rd grade. Now I am a 3rd grade teacher and bought it to show my class on DVD.Such a good story without using words. It captures young audiences and brings me back to the good old days.

5-0 out of 5 stars probably the greatest short film ever made
And simply magical for people of any age. I saw this movie as a child and it still stands up as the masterpeice it was at that time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Appalling Loses Its Meaning...
...when applied to this DVD.It would appear to have been transferred from a VHS copy. It's so soft as to be impossible to watch.I hope the director's family (he died in 1970) is simply holding back the original masters in hopes of making a deal for an authorized DVD version."The Red Balloon" is such a wonderful little movie -- perhaps the best introduction to the cinema for any child -- but it is almost destroyed by the condition of the source used for this transfer. Can't we have a version that matches the film's vision for its 50th anniversary? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars stereotypes on steroids
For the uninitiated, this is a documentary about Jesco White, "the last of the mountain dancers," and his wild and crazy family. This little acre of Mulletland is pervaded by gasoline huffin', whiskey drinkin', shotgun shootin' madness, as well as loyalty to family, love for Elvis and naivete about just what the filmmaker, Jacob Young, is doing.
4-0 out of 5 stars New vs. original cut
I noticed two main differences between the "Dancing Outlaw" DVD with "Dancing Outlaw II" by Jacob Young and the original documentary as shown on WV public television. In the original, when Jesse is relating the "tragety" of the shooting that killed D.Ray and wounded Dorsey and Jesse, he says "That was the first time I had been shot in the neck before."The DVD has a different cut in which Jesse leaves out "before".The second difference I noticed was that Bertie May, in the first version said about D. Ray "He knew 52 more steps than any other." That was the whole sentence. In the DVD a different take is used in which she says "He knew 52 more steps than any other mountain dancer."Better English but both changes take away the quirky eccentricity of the original versions.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best 25 minute biographical film ever made
I had the world DVD premiere for this film in February 2005 at the South Charleston Museum in South Charleston, WV. Hundreds showed up - and for good reason. It is the best selling film ever made inside West Virginia - about a West Virginian. It is also the best short documentary about an unusual man and his life ever made, making my Top Ten list of all times - in Facets Multimedia. The director, Jacob Young, watched films by Les Blank and Errol Morris, and using some of their style and his own, created a masterpiece. At one time the state library of West Virginia had at least 8 copies of this film, loaning all of them out for a decade or more. It is hilarious, sad, tragic, insightful - and about everything else one can show in a film. It stands with any film, including Errol Morris' masterpieces like THE FOG OF WAR. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars utterly amazing
This DVD is beautiful. The high quality slow-zoom slideshow with the inspiring commentary of the artist was absolutely captivating.
5-0 out of 5 stars peeling away the layers
the art of alex grey is very much like the hiroglyphs of the ancient egyptians.so much information about the true functions of man and our relationship with the all.it is soul shaking and spirit awakening.magnificent

5-0 out of 5 stars Transport to Expanded Dimensions of Healing
If sacred art is new to you, or you're already familar with Alex Grey's work, Artmind is an essential foundation to your library.Inspired by a health expert (Psychiatrist), Artmind and two of Alex's books (Sacred Mirrors and Transfigurations) are used as "assistance" for me to describe different dimensions of my healing process that are difficult to put into words during my sessions.Artmind is fascinating in that Alex reveals intimate details about how he became a visionary artist, and opens his heart as a renowned teacher to educate the viewer about different spiritual traditions and how sacred art can empower your body's innate healing processes. Also included in Artmind is a gallery of Alex's paintings that the film maker displays with sensational animation design and music. When watched carefully, "magic moments" happen, where the room fills with a luminous light, and an effable Presence.

Editorial Review

Zhang Yimou, the celebrated "fifth generation" filmmaker from China, trained as a cinematographer before he turned to directing, and it shows in every color-drenched, exquisitely composed frame of this 1989 romantic tragedy. The aging Yang Jin-shan (Li Wei) runs a successful textile dying factory and purchases the beautiful Ju Dou (Gong Li) to continue his line, but when his own impotence shatters all hope of progeny, he takes his anger out on his innocent young bride. Gentle Yang Tian-qing (Li Bao-Tian) is the sole employee in the lonely factory and his tender friendship with Ju Dou blossoms into love. When Yang Jin-shan becomes wheelchair-bound, the lovers take their affair out into the open, producing a child that he must claim as his own to save face. The stark drama plays out against the astounding backdrop of colored clothes draped throughout the factory and courtyard, like a rainbow holding out promise of a rich, vibrant world just out of reach. By contrast, the subdued performances hide the inner emotions behind a mask of social control. As the masks are pulled away behind the protective walls of the factory, the fragile triangle collapses as the child grows up espousing traditional values. The film was banned in China, where leaders saw it as an unflattering metaphor for modern Chinese life, a society ruled by a coterie of aging, controlling men. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Ju Dou: Razor D. E. lo-fi remix
Ju Dou is a great movie, I'd only previously seen it on VHS borrowed from the public library and was so looking forward to this release, but sadly I concure, this DVD is as bad as the other reviewers have previously stated.Worse than the old VHS recording I saw 7 years ago.So bad, that it's gotten someone like me, one who never writes reviews, to comment on it.This DVD should not be sold in the United States, or anywhere.Unfortunately, I picked this DVD up on a whim before reading any reviews.
2-0 out of 5 stars Amazon should not sell these titles
I believe the quality of this transfer (along with the one for Raise The Red Lantern) is so horrific that it completely ruines the beautiful experience of watching these Gong Li/ Zhang Yimou movies and should not even be offered for sale. Truly Bad

5-0 out of 5 stars Different
I own a lot of Asian movies. They are different from western movies. I really enjoy them. I own most of Yimou's movies. He is an excellent director. The very enchanting Gong Li stars in a lot of them and is quite an excellent actress. A lot of his movies have a political statement. You will find an excellent story of a woman married to an impotent man. Has a child by another. She's abused by this old impotent man throughout. I won't ruin it,but I really enjoyed it. Buy Shanghai Triad,Temptress Moon,Chinese Box,Qiu Ju,Empress Dowager,Emperor and the Assasin,Zhou Yu's Train and Soul Haunted by painting. Gong Li is an excellent actress and called the best in China. I believe it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Burning Man
Fantastic Film!!! A thoughtful mixture: an intelligent documentary film about a visceral and visual arts festival. This documentary filmmaker doesn't pretend to be hip and never professes, "This is THE definitive Burning Man festival experience". Instead he allows you to take an honest journey to the event. First the documentary shows us art projects and colorful participants, like the gun toting disgruntled postal workers. Then the filmmakers themselves make their own art projects, some of which are very amusing. The filmmaker's enjoyment of Burning Man is evident throughout the documentary. Maybe that's why this IS the best documentary to date of the Burning Man Festival. Highly recommended for anyone planning to go, an experienced traveler or anyone who's even remotely curious. You won't be disappointed! The previous user, saviola417, is abusing Amazon's customer review system to advertise his photography services.I doubt he's even seen the DVD.Shame on him, and I hope the site administrators remove his review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desert fun, and much more
I agree with other reviewers that this documentary movie does a great job of introducing the spectacle and philosophy of Burning Man to newcomers, while also being satisfying for those of us who regularly attend the festival.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-see for the curious
If you've heard about the Burning Man Festival, but have never been there, this is the movie for you!Friends of mine go to Burning Man every year, and they talk about it with incredible, wide-eyed enthusiasm. But I never appreciated what they were really so excited about until I saw this movie.
