5-0 out of 5 stars Inventive, Side-Splitting Television
"Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" is easily one of the funniest shows to hit the tube in a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars So Painful you can't look away!!!
Finally this great show comes out onto DVD. With the DVD you get the great games like LOG ROLLARS, BOLDER DASH, SURF BOARDS OF DEATH and my favorite SINKERS AND FLOTERS. With this you get 13 wonderful episodes full of knee crushing, neck breaking, and stomach smashing fun, all with the funny hosts Vic Romano and Kenny Blankenship.
3-0 out of 5 stars American corporate censorship at its best
MXC is great!5 stars for whit and humor and an awsomely entertaining show. But sadly after you realize how much is cut from the original (from 1 hour down to 20 mins per episode) one is filled with a lot of sadness for what one is missing. It is sad that American corporations controlling what we watch have to butcher this great show down to a mear touch of its original.Sader even so that the script writers had to pander to this to get their dream on the air.Such is the American corporate way.Such is the corporate perception of the average American intelligence level and attention span.Watching the original Japanese, or the foreign versions such as the Spanish or the uncut German versions gives one a totally different impression of the show and makes one very depressed at the 1/4 pint version available here on DVD.How I wish American versions of foreign films and shows werent so highly censored!Pretty much the same as communist censorship except this isn't the government doing it . Well over a hundred different great challenges and a similar number of shows whittled down to 30 odd games and 13 shows (albeite this is just the first season). How great would it have been to have Kenny and Vic voice over an hour for each unedited original show!I think all MXC / Takeshi's Castle fans would have raved. So zero stars for good old American corporate censorship and 5 for great humor of Vic, Kenny and the gang = 3 stars overall. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Three views of the heroic in a stratified society
Since there are over 300 reviews of this magnificent film already posted, I would like to discuss some aspects of this film that are rarely discussed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the greatest film ever made
Seven Samurai is the greatest film made by perhaps the world's greatest film director. The string of films from Rashomon to Red Beardrepresents an almost unbroken run ofclassic films (all but one starring Toshiro Mifune), not the least for the fact that Akira Kurosawa was able to infuse humanism and populism amongst the chaos and indifference in a wide variety of settings. Individuals could make a difference in an indifferent society (Ikiru, Red Beard) or work together for a common cause (Seven, Sanjuro), while in other films the inhumanity of class culture (The Lower Depths, Stray Dog, High and Low) was laid bare.Yet at other times, it could be seen that Kurosawasoured on the idea thatsociety could change for the better in films like The Bad Sleep Well and Record of a Living Being, giving way to the chaos of Fortress of Blood and Yojimbo. But whether pessimistic or optimistic, Kurosawa's films seldom fail to both entertain and inform.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Have To Be Remade At Least It's Scorsese
Having already seen "The Departed" viewing "Infernal Affairs" is something of a blessing and a curse. As superlative as "Infernal Affairs" is it ultimately suffers in comparison to Martin Scorsese's remake.Though Scorsese departs to a degree from his Asian source material his effort is deeper in characterization and he ratchets up the tension better. That said, "Infernal Affairs" is much more economical in it's storytelling and despite your familiarity with the basic premise there are enough differences between the two films to keep you on the edge of your seat.I only wish I saw "Infernal Affairs" first so I didn't have to make the ultimate comparison.Final verdict:"Infernal Affairs" is a great film but "The Departed" is a masterpiece.Of note is the inclusion of an alternate ending on the disc. The makers of "Infernal Affairs" chose the correct one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Americanized, but still great
Just so people who have seen this movie before aren't caught by surprise, I should point out that this release (the one with the strange Asiansploitation cover art) has had some major editing done to the subtitles compared to prior releases. I'm not a native speaker of Cantonese, nor a professional translator, so I can't say if the prior version had a perfect English translation. But, this version goes too far in trying to make the movie understandable to us naive and insulated Westerners.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good acting, good story, just not terribly exciting
I still don't get what that girl with the gun is doing on the DVD cover, it just doesn't make any sense at all.The movie is very good, but it doesn't have an exciting start, just as it didn't do anything for me at the end.Everything in between is good though. The story moves along at a good pace and keeps you involved. With how much I have heard about Tony Leung being the mole in the gang and Andy Lau being the mole within the police, I guess I was just expecting more out of this movie.I am not a big fan of Anthony Wong, in fact I hate him in many movies but this I thought was his best performance I have ever seen.He gives you that seriousness that you need in a cop drama.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, light and delightful...
Audrey Tautou makes this film more than what it would be without her. That's not to say that the plot is mediocre but without her the film itself wouldn't have stood out.As Amelie Audrey is wonderfully delightful, a true free spirit and a classic comedic talent. When Amelie finds a hidden tin in her apartment that belonged to a previous tenant she becomes determined to return it and once she has she decides to help others around her, from her father who's always wanted to vacation but never has because of Amelie's supposed heart condition as a child, to her workmate who needs a man.She tries helping an old man in her apartment as well as a tyrant grocer's assistant. But in the end she ends up helping herself for once and everything ends up happy. It's a very sweet story that's elevated by a brilliant performance by Audrey.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind
Amélie Poulain is a young woman who glides through the streets of Paris as quietly as a mouse. With wide eyes and a tiny grin, she sees the world in a magical light, discovering minor miracles every day. Having seen her share tragedies and fantasies, Amélie Poulain is not like other girls. Bursting with imagination, she enjoys simple pleasures until she discovers that her goal in life is to help others. Amélie dedicates her life to making people happy, and along the way, she stumbles upon her own happiness... residing in the man named Nino Quicampoix.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Adorable movie

Editorial Review

Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet. What a natural for a TV sitcom! His screen wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), put it best in the episode "The Psychiatrist": "You're either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some Benzedrine puff adder." He mockingly replies, "Just trying to enjoy myself, dear." With his gangly frame and contortionist abilities, Cleese brilliantly punctuates Basil's outrageous faux pas with absurd gymnastics and turns Three Stooges-style pokes and kicks into a slapstick ballet. Scales's Sybil is the genial but obliviously chatty voice of reason and Andrew Sachs mangles the English language as the Spanish bellhop Manuel, whose struggles with simple directions results in comic lunacy reminiscent of Robert Benigni. After a six-episode run in 1975, Cleese and cowriter and costar Connie Booth (who plays Polly, the maid all too often pulled into Basil's ridiculous plans) reunited the cast in 1979 for another six episodes without missing a punch line. The four-volume collection contains all 12 shows, interspersed with interview segments featuring Cleese discussing the genesis of the series and anecdotes about the individual episodes. Remember to watch the opening credits of each show to spot the creative misspellings on the hotel sign (my favorite: "Fatty Owls"). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic that never gets old
In my opinion, it's a toss-up between this and Blackadder as the greatest British comedy of all time. Warning: this complete set includes rather lengthy (and not always interesting) interviews with John Cleese before every episode. If you have no interest in the script-writing process or Cleese's relationship with the actor who played Manuel, then that might be a minor bother you'll have to fast forward through. But even so- this is a great series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious
This is some of John Cleese's best work! Cleese plays Basil Fawlty: a singularly inhospitable manager of a small hotel. He takes bad customer service to the ridiculous extreme. It is uproariously funny to watch the terrible mess he causes for himself. The good writing, well designed cast of characters, snappy timing, and witty dialogue had me hooked from the first episode. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes Monty Python's Flying Circus, British humour, or just laughing in general!

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant!!!
fawlty towers is one of the most hillarious shows ever!!!! i could watch basil fawlty forever and still be entertained!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad energy
Wow...Based on the reviews I thought this would be a good movie, perhaps a great movie. Folks it isn't. It's like taking a trip to the dump, garbage in every direction. Unbelievably gross and repugnant human beings. Foul language abounds as do hateful people without morals or values. I didn't even make it to the half-way point of this film yet the extreme bad vibrations stayed with me for a good long while afterwards. Do yourself a favor, stay away from this cesspool. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps my favorite movie of all time!
This is an exceptionally wonderful, entertaining film;I've watched and enjoyed it many times, and my teen and 'tween daughters have also fallen in love with it.The other reviewers have more than adequately described the outstanding performances of Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, and Johnny Depp. One of my own favorites in the film, however, is Hugh O'Conor as the young parish priest, Pere Henri. His rendition of "Ain't Nothin but a Hound Dog" (while working in his garden) is priceless.Kudos also to Lena Olin in her role of Josephine, who evolves from battered wife to confident tavern owner. I can't imagine anyone not loving and enjoying this movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Highly acclaimed. That, I knew. I watched the first 30 minutes, which is 1/4 of the movie, before I decided to hang it up. New lady moves into a conservative French town and opens a chocolate shop. This upsets the local church, even before she begins unleashing secret desires and so forth with her sinful chocolate. Okay. Can you really carry 2 hours with this single plot? Nope. This one's boring.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice movie
I enjoyed this movie very much. It's not your average love story of tortured hearts. It is mixed with some fun whimsy and a sexy Gypsy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars VENGEANCE Served Cold
Yes, I'll be the first to admit that I was hugely disappointed in LADY VENGEANCE (aka SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE), Chan-wook Park's third stop in his trilogy of films exploring ... well ... er ... vengeance, mostly. In a wild vision that began with SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, was viscerally amped up with OLDBOY, LADY is decidedly ... er ... feminine?
5-0 out of 5 stars Park's third and final vengeance film takes a different, and effective, approach to the subject
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, the final installment in Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy, is a far cry from it's predecessors Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance & Oldboy in the fact that it attempts to justify the idea of vigilante action - and, to an arguable degree, succeeds. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Film from Park
If you're reading this, odds are that you've seen some of Park Chan-Wook's other films, particularly 'Oldboy'.Suffice to say, if you liked 'Oldboy' I can't imagine why you wouldn't like 'Lady Vengeance' as well, nor do I believe that this movie will convert you if you aren't already a fan.A few people will try and tell you that this is actually quite different from Park's last film, but I really don't know where they get this conclusion. 'Lady Vengeance' has unusual, stylish and artfully composed shots, surrealist inserts, skewed chronology and storytelling, themes of revenge, loss, family and reunification and an unpredictable mix of abrupt violence, black humor and surprising pathos. In short, it has all the stylistic trademarks that defined 'Oldboy'.It does, as the film moves along, eventually venture into more purely bleak pastures somewhat reminiscent of 'Sympathy...' in tone, but overall it still reminds far more of it's direct predecessor than of that other film.Arguably, it isn't much of a step forward from `Oldboy' in terms of style or content, but few people can pull off a film like this the way that Park can, so he's allowed to spin his wheels a bit if he so desires.

1-0 out of 5 stars A French Socialist Propaganda Piece...
Desperately meant to appease restless, unemployed, inner city immigrant youths. At least I think that's what it was intended for. Somehow, I don't think it's going to work (see news stories on car burning riots). The whole thing about walled off sections of French cities does however seem like a very near term reality.
5-0 out of 5 stars for fans of Parkour and French Urban Culture
This film features the guru of Parkour (or "free running" as it's commonly called in the U.S.), David Belle. The athleticism, grace, and excitement of parkour really can not be overstated. The physical prowess of Belle and the "runners" (term for those who practice parkour) is inspirational, amazing to watch, and totally enjoyable.
5-0 out of 5 stars John Carpenter meets The Transporter!
What makes District B13 work is the charisma of the two protagonists, especially Leito. At first, you think he's some junkie scumbag but he doesn't use or sell the drugs, he destroys them. Not to mention that your heart goes out to him once you see his sister get snatched by the bad guys and then turned into a zombified junkie. Leito also has mad skills, jumping, punching and kicking anything that stands in his way. Even though Damien doesn't have something personal at stake like Leito (and so you root for him slightly less) but he doesn't want to see two million die if that bomb goes off. Like Leito, he's an accomplished fighter but his forte is with guns.

5-0 out of 5 stars A human Hitler is a scarier Hitler
"Downfall" is an intelligent, engrossing drama, and one that is sure to be a treat for history buffs, though "treat" might not be the right word in light of the grim proceedings on display.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are shocked at what happened, then explore the issue furher
This movie deserves all of the accolades it has received both from the film industry and the reviewers who have written about it here. It's interesting, however, that people are so shocked at how Hitler and his henchmen managed to take over Germany and lead the world into a war that included the ultimate atrocity of the Holocaust. While anyone who is familiar with German history knows that the country was especially vulnerable to a charismatic, if obviously megalomaniacal, leader like Hitler, there were many other countries who followed such leaders in the twentieth century; Hitler simply managed to take his schemes to theretofore unreached heights before his (and Germany's) inevitable "Downfall."
5-0 out of 5 stars The most ultra-realistic depiction of Hilter to date.
Seeing/hearing a movie such as this in the German language adds another layer which makes the movie ultra realistic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Brutality.
Life is hard and difficult.Unfortunately, for many people in the world life is also unbearably brutal.Living in the United States we often forget that, even if we grew up in impoverished small towns or in the slums of the inner city.CITY OF GOD is a film that examines the brutality of humanity in a housing project that is part of Rio de Janeiro.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a movie, but also a Social Project
The movie was shot in one of the "favelas" in Rio de Janeiro, my home town... I used to drive by it all the time when going to the beach.
4-0 out of 5 stars Life doesn't come with any guarentees
Intertwining the stories of various youths growing up in the slummy Rio de Janeiro suburb called the City of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
I wasn't prepared for just how good this movie is.Really stunning stuff start to finish.Easily competes with my favorite Jet Li movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Spectacular, Real!Excellent movie!
Tony Jaa is the new martial arts sensation with abilities that put him up there with the other greats: Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan. This guy is spectacular with his moves. It's all real. The guy worked so hard to condition his body to the point where he can do all these stunts, and martail arts moves. The movie was great, very entertaining, and has an old traditional story which is a different and welcome change from most of the story-depth-lacking movies of today. This is a martial arts film that must be experienced.I just saw Tony Jaa's second film, The Protector in theaters, and it is even better than this one, Ong Bak.Tony jass is fantastic and his martial arts movies are wonderful, and the reminiscient stories remind of my past since I came from a similar type of poor, small village in another country.Keep up the great work Tony Jaa for doing what you do best. And thanks to the film production companies that brought this omvie to the USA. As for the music in the film. I wasn't that happy with RZA's music in this movie. It didn't fit well.

4-0 out of 5 stars look out chan & li - here comes jaa
Recently realizing that Jackie Chan and Jet Li are about done with movie making for the most part, I always wondered if there was anyone who could take over.Chan and Li are one of a kind and the best out there.Fortunately, Tony Jaa has entered the scene with skills and originality of his own.The first thing I like about Tony Jaa is he is an expert in Muay Thai fighting, something new and original for the good guy in a movie. The next thing I like is that he fights like Jet Li and does stunts like Jackie Chan, though once again he adds his own originality quite often.

Life is Beautiful is a film by Roberto Benigni, which really showcases his talent before he made an embarassing stab at playing Pinocchio. "Life is Beautiful" is probably my favorite Foreign film (I've only seen probably 5 though); It's funny, heartfelt, has wonderful performances, and is all around a joy to watch. It also happens to be a layered film, that goes in one direction before veering off into another but never losing it's charm. Benigni plays Guido, a waiter with a humorous streak. After Guido contantly stumbles into Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), he falls in love with her and the movie (with no warning) flashes forward a number of years. This first half of the film (which is a little over 50 minutes) is pretty much a romantic-comedy. The second half is quite different. In the second half, Guido and Dora (who now have a young son named Joshua) live in Italy which is overrun with Germans. Subsequently, Guido and Joshua are taken into a concentration camp; Dora also goes to the camp, but under different circumstances which are a bit unbelievable but still a nice part of the story. Anyway, Guido employs his quick-wit to keep his son from the horrors of the camp; Guido tells Josh that it's actually an elaborate game and that he must avoid being seen. If, at the end, he does everything he's told and racks up the most "points" he will get a tank. Benigni (who is also the co-writer and director) does something that's never been done. He takes a horrifying setting (a concentration camp) and turns it into a comedy, without exploting anything and without losing heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Be happy that weare HERE.
Despite the holocaust that can happen to anybody, this movie shows deeply that as a child, everything you see around you is in it's nature. The heart of a child can feel the joy of living, while we (grown-up children) often look for the shade or nuance of everything....we judge, compare, condemn and critic. We are duped by all the happenings around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual splendour highlights martial arts-lovetriangle plot
"House of Flying Daggers" is one of the best-looking movies you'll ever see.Yimou Zhang, known for such over-the-top spectacles as 2002's Jet Li flick, "Hero," may be the most visually exuberant director this side of Baz Luhrmann.Whether it's an ornate reception hall, or a lush bamboo forest, or a snow-covered landscape, "House" cannot offer anything less than a breathtaking scene. 4-0 out of 5 stars The First Time This Was 5 Stars
The very first time I saw this amazing film I was wrapped around its finger. Everything about it is perfect from its scenery to the perfectly paced and executed fight scenes. After the first time you see it the more and more you watch it the more you notice little things that are big. Basically the things that made the film beautiful start to unravel. One thing I hate that I am seeing a lot of is the digital blood, so when someone is hit with one of the daggers it looks computer generated when the dagger hits someone and then the fake unneeded blood comes out. There are also the daggers that look digital and for some reason they feel the need to do a bunch of flips and turns while the dagger is in midair. Some of the scenery looks fake like in one scene Jin and Mei are walking down a hill and there is a very pretty background of trees and waterfalls but you notice that it's fake and looks like a painting. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent job from Zhang Yimou.
Another excellent job from Zhang Yimou. Also, my review still based on region 3 dvd for this film which was released by Edko Films. It's a 2 Disc Special Widescreen Edition. Everything is perfect for this dvd. The clearity of the picture and Dts Surround Sound was extremmely amazing. The special feature is in Chinese Mandarin and no subtitle. So you have to learn Mandarin or need a translator to understand what are the crew and the cast have said in their interviews. The bonus material includes the making, photo gallery, artwork gallery, cast and crew profile and the hidden menu which was really hard to access containing the music video, the way Andy Lau dubbing in studio and a few tv spot and trailer. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Did I Just Watch a Video Game?
This is an action packed thrill ride of a movie, but after a while it started to feel like I was watching somebody playing a video game. Our emotional attachment to the characters is remote and after awhile the killing becomesrepetitive.Personally, I would rather play a video game than watch this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nightmare come true or an astonishing film? May be both.
Although the setting of the story is a little bit overstretched in terms of reality (a whole class of teenagers is punished to take the "Battle Royale" course of self-extermination in futuristic Japan) the result is a very powerful film which presents the feelings and behavior of ordinary youths put under extreme stress in a fascinating way. There is a profusion of blood and brutal violence in some scenes but the film is so terrific that fixes you in your seat. Expect a big surprise in the finale!

5-0 out of 5 stars SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS WERE NEVER THIS ROUGH!
"Battle Royale" is a truly magnificant film, and is highly recommended. There are a bountiful number of reviews here, therefore, I would just like to add that if you have not seen the film, buy it or rent it. I first saw the film a few years ago at the urging of a friend and was not disappointed in the least.

A handful of people in the San Fernando Valley are having one hell of a day. TV mogul Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) is on his deathbed; his trophy wife (Julianne Moore) is popping pills with alarming frequency. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Voice of Paul Thomas Anderson
In Dogville Vs. Hollywood I wrote a single line on Magnolia, calling it "a sprawling, only partly successful imitation of Altman, [that] suggested Anderson was a filmmaker with aspirations possibly beyond his talents." Having seen the film for second time, seven years later, I have some serious crow to eat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant movie, MOST unheard about movie.
Why be disaponted with the ending. It was great, unexpected, and brilliant. This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first minute. ITS THE ENDING THAT SUMS UP THIS MOVIE WITH GREATNESS. ITS THE PERFECT CHERRY ON TOP.

5-0 out of 5 stars O. I. M.
One Intense Movie.
2-0 out of 5 stars First rule of the fight club - You must be a white male to love this movie
This movie was very much like American Beauty, except it was a little better. This kind of dark comedy is made for white men who have lost their souls to the modern American life. But for all other people, including myself, Fight Club was not that good. And I GET the movie. I am a consumer, like most Americans. But not to a degree where I can relate to Jack who is the main character. Starting a fight club to re-discover masculinity or one's identity is an absurd idea. What is sad is the fact that so many white men are facinated by the whole idea of Fight Club. No wonder the only people that joins the Fight Club in the movie are white males. No wonder that the only real people in my life that I saw raving about this movie so far has been all "white men". The movie does speak one truth. Modern American lifehas reached a point of sickness that a movie like this drawn a significant number of fans. Like I said, I have not come to that point yet and I do plenty of things to make my life significant and meaningful. People should build a family, serve their community, and make real friends to live a happy and significant life. Fight Club is not necessary unless you really became like Jack. Do not watch this movie unless you are white male. Watch if you are really curious, but it will be a waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars "This is your life and it's ending one minute at atime"
This is vivid proof that there's still some intelligence left in Hollywood: a daring straight-forward, in-your-face story, Fight Club is an outstanding film that takes no concessions whatsoever towards the viewer, becoming a cult film years after its release like often these type of films do, Fight Club is flawless, from the performances to the cinematography to the well blended special effects. Not since Stanley Kubrick a director has been so bold in talking about these subjects of alienation and the nature of violence in the consumer society we live in. It's worth more than one look. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, slightly surreal comedy on the merger of East and West Germany
If you don't mind reading subtitles (or, of course, you understand German) this movie is great. Some of the humor is visual, some verbal, so you have to be good with subtitle reading.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bye, Lenin!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spreewald Pickles!
Good Bye, Lenin! is a movie set in East Germany that starts in the late 70s.We watch a family, in the opening credits, in which the father has escaped to the West, leaving behind his wife, and two kids.Alex, the son, is the character who tells the story and we watch as the mother, broken and in pain from her husband dumping them, embraces socialism to the point where she is totally loyal to its ideals.

5-0 out of 5 stars C'est super!
I think this may even be better than L'Auberge. This is a laugh-out-loud at the awkwardness of real life situations film. You do not have to be a francophile to enjoy this film - my husband loved it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sequel is best than the first film,"L Aubergue espagnole" ( "The Spanish apartment")...
"Les poupees russes" (= "Russian dolls") is the sequel to "L Aubergue espagnole" (= "The Spanish apartment"), an entertaining film about young people living in a foreign country and trying to find their path in life.
5-0 out of 5 stars great film
Well I actually bought this movie already from the sister amazon site amazon.fr. The international collectors edition is a region 2 enoded movie, but if you have one of many dvd players that through a little passcode on the controller will play any movie of any region.Looking at the description of the USA package it seems like a waste of money, because the original DVD not only has english subs for non francophones, but a bonsus disk with directors interviews and much more. The movie takes place 5 years after lauberge espanole. Basically Xavier comes to the conclusion that being a lady killer is nice, but to truly be happy and find real love you need to settle down. ...
