Editorial Review

John Reilly (Jeffrey Combs) has come to Italy with wife and blind daughter in tow to arrange for the sale of his newly inherited castle. Unbeknownst to these folks, the duchess who willed the castle to Reilly kept her kid shackled in the dungeon, lambasting him regularly with a wicked cat-o'-nine-tails.Though the duchess is gone, the eponymous freak remains, now fully grown. As the family moves into the castle to await its sale, internal conflicts concerning Reilly's guilt over the blinding of the daughter, and the blame from his wife, further fracture their unstable family unit.Castle Freak escapes his shackles in search of food, and more importantly human warmth. The Freak just doesn't know how to express his need for love in a socially acceptable way, however, and seems destined for an unsavory end at the hands of the something-to-prove Reilly, who must find some way to route to vicious creature. But there's more than one way to skin a cat (though they only use one of those ways in this picture). Fitting addition to the oeuvre of splatter specialist Stuart Gordon (Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad if you like cheesy horror
Castle Freak is cheesy horror. If that is what you're into, then you will probably love this flick. Personally, I found myself laughing throughout the whole film. It really isn't that scary. The Freak eats a pet cat. But he has a soft spot for the blind daughter. The dialogue is so generic.
3-0 out of 5 stars satisfying but unexceptional
Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, and Stuart Gordon teamed up for Re-Animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986).They did so again for Castle Freak.
1-0 out of 5 stars What what what???!!!
I have to wonder what world, what physical plane, what state of mind were the reviewers here who gave this a good review on? Or maybe they are Full Moon employees LOL...First of all, the movie, especially one of the earlier scenes, was identical to the 80's flick "The Unnamable", which is also and HP Lovecraft based flick. The castle freak itself looked like a bad halloween rubber suit. When he breaks out his cell, well this was just hilarious, it reminded me of the incredible hulk. Yes, Jeffrey Combs is in it. But his acting is cheesy as it can be. Hunt down The Unnamable instead, a much better movie. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Vampire Journals
I am a horror buff. This movie was okay, has a good story line.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ponderous
Welcome to Bucharest where Zachary (David Gunn) the vampire killer has come to hunt the creatures that turned the woman he loved into a monster he had no choice but kill. This time his objective is Ash (Jonathan Morris), a master vampire who maintains his tribe in the secret Bucharest underground while operating a very high toned nightclub as a lure for new 'blood.'
2-0 out of 5 stars 2 Whole Stars...I Must Be In A Generous Mood
Like the title says, I'm being mad generous by giving this movie two stars...it really deserves none. Subspecies is an excellent, 4-part series written and directed by Full Moon Studio's Ted Nicholau (Actually, the first three Subspecies are allright, but the fourth movie sucks in my opinion). However, Vampire Journals is nothing more than a feeble attempt to portray a different side of the Subspecies archetype.

5-0 out of 5 stars fairy tales
Its a very good movie funnyand a good musical very interestinc group of people.

4-0 out of 5 stars great as an adult film icebreaker
Okay, I know it is old and has a lot of hair but if you can get past that, it is great. I love this movie because anyone can watch it even if they are not in to adult entertainment. It is hillarious but at the same time extremely sexy.... I definitely recommend this one, even for the prudish...

2-0 out of 5 stars 70's musical with lousy singing
I guess I should have paid more attention to the date of production a little better. I can live with 1970s hairy bushes and saggy rear ends. When it is combined with a really lame story, increadibly bad singing, and ugly actors two stars is being kind. I was expecting it to be viginettes based on Fairy Tales, but with adult situations. It was one big romp, with the made up prince looking for someone to marry to produce an heir so he can inherit his kingdom. He finds a virgin sleeping beauty in a whorehouse that the Old women who lives in a shoe runs. If you are looking for a good adult themed movie, skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Papa's got a brand new trick.
Ok, for one thing this is my first review of anything on amazon or otherwise.
4-0 out of 5 stars Vincent Gallo Steals Every Scene
With this film, I'm going to do what Roger Ebert does. After watching the film, I would give it three stars and a C. However, the qualities that it has that allowed me to enjoy it manage to bump up my grade to a B. The first Freeway film (by the same writer/director of this film, Matthew Bright) was a new spin on Little Red Riding Hood which starred Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon. Freeway 2 has absolutely nothing to do with Freeway, except for the fact that this film also rehashes a classic story...This time Hansel and Gretel. Natasha Lyonne ('Slums of Beverly Hills') plays Crystal, also known as White Girl...White Girl has an eating disorder and is sentenced to 25 years in prison for some drug charges. The judge is director John Landis. In a hospital for eating disorders, awaiting transfer to a prison, White Girl meets Cyclona, who has more than just a little bit of mental problems. The two manage to escape from the prison and begin to head to Mexico so Cyclona can reunite with Sister Gomez (Vincent Gallo, who I'll talk about in a minute). David Alan Grier is hilarious as White Girl's lawyer. Anyway, I would've never heard of this film but I was surfing through Vincent Gallo's
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
Being a fan of the original "Freeway," I almost did not rent this movie because it is not a continuation of the first movie. In fact, it doesn't even have the same actors as the first and its plot is completely different. Also, the video cover suggests that the movie is a low budget b-rated flick with terrible acting and an even worse plot. I was pleasantly surprised. If you are a fan of the original than you will absolutely love this movie. Its darker, more perverted, twisted and sick. Its a dark disturbing movie that delves into as many dark and taboo themes as one could ask for. Cannibalism, serial killing, bulimia, lesbianism, psychopaths, fantasy..this movie has it all. I also loved the inclusion of a fairy tale theme that was actually more a part of the movie than the little red riding hood was in the original. Definitely a must see! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure
Well, maybe not too guilty about it, I do like Trancers.Tim Thomerson does a good job of playing the hard boiled, wise cracking detective.Trancers, like the many of the movies from New Moon were low budget, cheesy but very enjoyable to watch.Mr Thomerson did a good job in all of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of those movies...
...that once you see it you can't seem to get it out of your head, even years later. Finally decided to get my own copy and it was just as much fun as when I saw it years ago.Notable for an early preformance of Helen Hunt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trancer I review
If you like typical 80's schlock sci-fi, this movie is for you! I loved it when I saw it originally, and still do today! Who doesn't think Tim Thomerson is handsome with his greased-look 80's hair? Helen Hunt always has been one of my favorites also! I only wish the entire series was on DVD, but alas...it's not! Unless you liked it originally when it came out in the 80's you probably won't get it, but my gang liked all of Jack Deth's movies! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hideious
Outrageous and funny.Perfect for those in the deformed gendre.I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Deformed. Devious. Delightful.
Okay now, when it comes from Full Moon Pictures and has a title like HIDEOUS!, it should be obvious to any potential customer or renter that the film is not going to be Oscar quality. But it is equally reasonable to assume that connoisseurs of the tasteless and the outrageous are gonna be in for a treat. 1997's HIDEOUS! is another direct-to-video flick from the Full Moon duo of director Charles Band and writer Benjamin Carr, the same pair who gave the public B-movie gems like HEAD OF THE FAMILY (1996), THE CREEPS (1997), and Mystery Monsters (1997), to name but a few.
3-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, insanely odd movie
Great memories here. I saw this movie on Sci-Fi channel one night at 4am when me and my brother were just sitting up all night grooving (like always). Let me tell you, if a movie is so spectacular that they have to show it at 4 in the morning, then you KNOW it's worth it! In fact, watching movies in the middle of the night is the best way to find worthwhile films. When the commercail was on before Hideous, I asked my brother "Why do they call it hideous?" ...and then we found out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Series
I like collecting DVDs of movies I liked as a kid,for nostalgia, and I was really into full moon movies. The Puppet Master series, Dollman, Demonic toys, Pit & The Pendulum, Trancers Crash and Burn and Subspecies. Most of these DVDs are hard to find. For those that don't know a few years ago Full Moon sold their DVD rights to Paramount to market their movies. But Koch video released many official Full Moon movies on DVD illegally causing a big fall out between Full Moon and Paramount. The original Subspecies is available on DVD (other movies released were Puppet Master I and II, Puppet Master boxed set, Crash and Burn, Pit & Pendulum and Demonic Toys. These are rare, expensive and hard to find but very possible. Subspecies I is available on Amazon for 199.99...a little much.)
4-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't Subspecies 1,2 & 3 on DVD!!
The Subspecies series is one of the best vampire saga's out there. Though they are low budget, they use their budget well and they have wonderful gothic atmospheres. What makes me mad is that only Subspecies 4 is on DVD! You cannot have one Subspecies movie without the others; they are all connected like one big long movie. The VHS versions of Subspecies 1-3 are even out-of-print, so there is no way to get the entire series anymore! This is terrible for fans just getting into the series and as a result they are forced to purchase bootlegged copies. What makes me wonder is if they will ever release the others again because Full Moon pictures has just folded and has gone out of business. This is a scary thought indeed. Lets just hope that someday, the first three gems will be re-released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great End To A Great Series!
This movie is one of the few horror sequels that I can honestly say is a great film. The atmosphere of the movie is morbid.the acting is surperb.Followed up with a good plot line.A must see movie for Vampire fans, in which Radu is back again to reclaim his "fledging"Michelle who he turned into a vampire in the 1st film of the series. In the same time Michelle has been trying to rid herself of Radu himself. With the "bloodstone"in the middle of the fight. This is the final chapter of a 4 part series of movies about the doom of the vampire Radu.A definate movie to watch over and over again. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A truthful review of the box set
I will admit that I am a fan of early Full Moon films. I grew up renting and buying those low-budget wonders like Dollman, Oblivion, Puppet Master, and Subspecies. These films will always hold a special place in my black heart. I however am sick and tired of reading reviews of this box set by "fan boys" stating such worthless babble as "this series rocks! 4-0 out of 5 stars Head
I'm starting to see that Full Moon does 2 different types of movies:The Subspecies kind that are supposed to be full on horror and movies like this that are supposed to be weird, scary and comical.I really enjoyed HOTF.I liked the makeup and the story kept me interested.Good characters in that family.Oh yeah, that blond chick was pretty happenin' as well.Nice job by Charles Band and co.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mess with the Head...and You're Dead!
Lance (Blake Bailey)--protagonist of the ultra-low-budget direct-to-video flick HEAD OF THE FAMILY (1996)--is the owner of a greasy-spoon diner in a small southern town, but a successful entrepreneur he is not.As with most of his fellow small-town denizens, Lance is the sort of white-trash American citizen who is more likely to wind up as a guest of Jerry Springer than in an issue of FORTUNE magazine.
3-0 out of 5 stars not weird enough

4-0 out of 5 stars Great 3D for a enjoyably stupid movie
OK,there is not really much to say here except that if you like to show off your field sequential 3D set you should have this disc as the depth is great and there is almost no ghosting in the entire film. The Plot is pure ham and cheese. A whacked out scientist steals the original manuscripts for Dracula, Frankenstein,The Werewolf of Paris, and The Mummy and begins to suck out the life force of a young librarian in order to bring the essence of the archetypes contained in the books to life.( I told you it was stupid)Before the entire experiment can transpose the girl escapes midway through and we are left we pint sized versions of the classic monsters who are none too happy about their current height. If you can accept a movie on the level of a Police Academy or Earnest goes to Camp then you should not have a problem with this. Only major gripe is that there is not enough in your face gags but compared to steaming dung like Camp Blood this is a masterpiece.

1-0 out of 5 stars A regular snoozefest.....
This is a dumb boring movie. I actually think this movie would be better to watch in 2d than 3d. The 3d in this movie sucks badly, and in order to really appreciate the campiness of the bad acting, direction, characters, and storyline-- one must not be waiting in eager anticipation for 3d scenes that simply do not deliver.
5-0 out of 5 stars This DVD is what I waited for !

1-0 out of 5 stars A riduculous waste of time
Kraa is supposed to destroy the earth, but he doesn't seem to take his assignment very seriously.Instead he just stands around in the same spot, waving his arms and shrieking until he gets shot. Our protagonists are assisted by a thingamajig which is variously described as a "talking sandwich" and a "cheese covered crab," and those descriptions are not far off. This thing is the only interesting part of the movie, and by interesting I mean you're so disturbed by it, it's hard to divert your eyes from it.It looks like a giant mushroom with hands; it speaks in an Italian accent and is covered with what looks like vomit. The movie looks like it was filmed in a couple hours. It makes Ed Wood look like Robert Altman by comparison.Throw a dart in the video store, and you'll hit something that's a whole lot more entertaining than this crap.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Zarkorr
If any of you have ever seen Zarkorr! The Invader, you will know this same movie is made by the same company. Although, Zarkorr does have its own problems which I state in my review of that film.

Lord Doom is tired of sitting in the middle of a cold, dead planet. He wants to live somewhere that is warm.So he instructs his dwarf henchman to send planet destroyer Kraa off to Earth to wipe out its civilization, thus making a takeover easier. The Planet Patrol gets wind of this horrid plan and attempts to stop Lord Doom. But Doom anticipated this and knocks their Death Star kinda thingie into self-destruct mode. The Patrol does manage to send an operative to Earth to stop Kraa though. His name is Mogyar and he kind of looks like a cheese covered crab, and he takes in an Italian accent!Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nuns From Outer Space...
Christopher Lee stars as an alien being who has made himself look like a catholic priest. He and six of his comrades, who have taken the form of nuns, are causing geologic disturbances around the world. Thankfully, a scientist and his wife (Sue "Lolita" Lyon) are on the case! Can they save the world before it explodes?? EOTW plays like a mystery w/ sci-fi trappings, until the "shocking" conclusion. Watch for an ancient Dean Jagger (Revolt Of The Zombies, X The Unknown) and a nearly unrecognizable Lew Ayres (Donovan's Brain) in small parts. Lee isn't bad as the alien leader, although he did make me think of Drac whenever he was on camera! P.S.- This movie has quite possibly THE most downbeat ending in movie history!... ... Read more

I'm not big into guilty pleasure movies. In fact of the 300 or so movies I own I think I have 3.Make it 4 now. After the first 20 minutes I was ready to turn the movie off.But I decided to watch on.And boy am I glad I did.It grew on me.It's so unique. It never takes itself too seriously while at the same time not taking itself lightly either.Great mix of horror/humor, and a fun movie I can see myself watching over and over.It ranks right up in my guilty pleasure department with Killer Klowns from Outer Space. All the characters are enjoyable and they all fit very well into the plot. It's just a fun watch. You get creepy, funny, serious, complex, simple all rolled into one.One of the few B movies that is enjoyable and gets better with each view. How can you fit 3 killer dolls, a shrunken head billionaire, a butler who wears clown make-up 24/7, a midget guard, a girl rock band electrocuted into playing songs of choice, a dominatrix female with superior intelligence and Type-A ambition, and a guy getting drilled in the heart with a drill bit all in one movie?Answer: Blood Dolls.Sometimes the stars just align perfectly. Thanks for the ride.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outrageous; Beyond the common Limits of Human Intelligence
"Blood Dolls" is a confounding freakfest about which little of worth can be said... It begins with a quite literal indictment of corporate ethics as a pair of unscrupulous complicitors in an unethical business enterprise enter the world of a business "genius" who wears a long-discarded X-Files prop (literally copied from the episode "Grotesque") as a mask, has a morose clown for a butler, and keeps a dwarf around for no apparent reason other than to keep the general sideshow aura amped to an extreme level. This dwarf routinely tortures his encaged, all-female rock band, who, beside being surprisingly technically adept, do little more than provide nudity. Shortly into the proceedings, the cornball bloodletting starts, the billionaire reveals the disproportionately small head beneath the mask, and one of the complicitous nobodies is transformed into a "blood doll." These must be parodies of "Puppet Master," but since that film might as well have been a parody itself, that isn't saying much. The film exudes an air of sadism amid the camp, and occassionally meanders into utterly senseless philosophical musings culled pretty much directly from the sources they cite. The acting is awful; the characters and story, absurd. However, it's also pretty damn funny, in an Ed Wood-let's take this seriously even as it becomes increasingly absurd to-kind of way. Worth a rent for a camp conoisseur, but little else.

4-0 out of 5 stars a great horror/humor combo
This one went surprisingly deep on the philosophical banter between the protagonist and antagonist. But it was no mere head-to-head talkie. The music was astonishingly good, the suspenseful action lent a continuing air of suspension and tension that gave you the creeps, and the script was a twist if Nietzsche meets the Twilight Zone. The babes were hot and sassy and the relationships complicated like the taste a well aged wine. If you don't like this movie, you probably don't like to have fun with horror and should seek your thrills in more somber chillers. The clown!William Burns brought levels of sophistication to his role. His character was a spiritual man, you see. The story's message might offend the devoutly religious. Too bad. Hidden talent showed up in this yarn. The girl band coulda been a contender. The lead actress in the movie leaves you begging for more. Literally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Puppet Master Back on Track!!
I'll skip the synopsis since adequate ones are already given.Since this is the most readily available full-length Puppet Master movie, most of you are likely to view this one first.I have to say that this sequel was far better than Parts 4 & 5.If you already are a fan of this series, then you'll likely enjoy this movie since it captures much of the same charm that were in the first 3.The storyline itself is interesting enough for a b-movie, and you really get a sense of who these characters (and the puppets) are.It has all the makings you'll ever need of horror cheese:The lonely old man and his beautiful daughter, a love interest between that daughter and the new 'boy' hired by the father, a town bully who gets his, and a near comical jerk local sheriff.
4-0 out of 5 stars PART 6 - A FUN B MOVIE
Things were getting tired and cheaper by part 6 of the Puppet Master series but there was still some fun to be had with everybody's favorite murderous puppets! The cast is solid, and there's a nice feeling of mystery to this one, and those lovable killer puppets keep things entertaining and fun for 90% of this flawed flick. Take it for what it is, pop some corn, enjoy a cold beverage, sit back and enjoy.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for a B movie
I'm not a Puppet Master guru like some of the other reviewers, but I thought the story line was OK. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible....
It worked the first time I used and then not at all. There was no phone number on the instructions (which were difficult to read and did not even include instructions on all the parts that were in the box), that I called them from the telephone number on their box and before I even described the problem, I was directed to print a form off the internet and to send the whole unit back!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice atmosphere, good characters.
This is about some college kids that move into an abandoned hospital (because it's cheaper than the dorms).Little do they know that a mass murder took place there years earlier.Soon strange things start happening - mysterious symbols appear in the hallway, there's a weird guy living in the cellar, shrieking noises are heard in the night. Then, one of them disappears - EEK!
4-0 out of 5 stars A near perfect movie from Full Moon!!!!!
I have grown to love and sometimes hate Full Moon over the years, because alot of their past efforts have failed. Many of Full Moon's movies usually have no plot, boring, terrible acting, or is just plain stupid. That was the not the case with Shrieker. Shrieker is full on fun suspense and slasher! It builds up to the deadly climax when the Shrieker is going to get some one! It makes you wonder who is it going to get next? Full Moon have ripped off of some movies in the past and Hellraiser was one of them. Somewhere in the opening credits it shows these markings and has someone talking. One of those markings were the puzzle box from Hellraiser. It wasn't shown in the rest of the movie so Full Moon didn't ripp off Hellraiser in the plot. That was the only putdown in this movie, because they ran out of ideas so they used the puzzle box from Hellraiser. I have seen other movies that have ripped off of other peoples ideas. For example Jason Goes To Hell : The Final Friday somewhere in the middle of that movie someone finds a book which turns out to be the Book of the Dead from Sam Raimi's gory cult classic Evil Dead. The Shrieker was an awesome looking creature and killed people in a disgusting way. I loved it! Shrieker is one of the few good Full Moon movies!
