3-0 out of 5 stars Kind OfA Yawner
As a fan of Beowulf I really wanted to love this film. Turns out it was okay, and thats about it. Slow in spots, and it did not really follow the book all that much. I think "13th Warrior" did a better job than this newer film as being closer to the original story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
This movie is a visual masterpiece. The cinematography deserves an award.
3-0 out of 5 stars Beowulf and Grendel
Overall, this is a good film if you consider it as a stand-alone work concerning Dark Age Europe. Relative to the Beowulf poem/mythos, however, it takes grand creative license with the story. Essentially the story is there, but the filmmakers spend way too much time shoe-horning the fictional Selma into the story as a love interest for Beowulf. There is no such character in the original poem, and her inclusion in the film comes across as a typical Hollywood manuever (despite the fact that it's an Icelandic film) to appeal to female viewers (the few that might be watching). So much of the story is dedicated to forcing Selma into the story that the mythos as a whole suffers. Worst of all is the part where Grendel sneaks into her dwelling one night via flashback and "has his way" with her, the result of which is a half-troll/half-human child that's just perfect for the obligatory sequel-setup ending (yet another Hollywood tradition).

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Favorite!
As a firm fan of the 5 hour BBC 1995 P&P miniseries, I went to this movie version with some skepticism, but found that it was much better than I expected even while it seemed to lack somewhat for me in some respects. THE P&P is hard to live up to! All in all though, I enjoyed this movie version immensely and went back to see it again right away. In and of itself, it is a delightful version of the story and even compared, it stands up on its own as another interpretation and look at the characters and events of this prima Austen work. The more I watch this movie (as a pick me up at home alone or with family or friends, with my feet up and a favorite something to nibble or sip on), the more I adore it. Let's face it; we can get our P&P fix faster/easier: in 2 hours instead of 5! (I still MUST watch the 5 hour version regularly as well.) This film version has a grittier, lowlier feel (perhaps a more realistic one) at the Bennet's and beyond, plus a more opulent contrast at Pemberly and related. One key detail that impressed me greatly was how I did not like Darcy nor see any attraction to the man at the beginning (how could HE be Darcy?!), but over time, he became more and more sympathetic (even appearing a pathetic figure at times: pitifully sunk in unrequited love - which pulled fully at my feelings to cheer him on in Elizabeth's direction) and attractive as the character - and this was as it should be. The performance of this actor made me want to see more of his work (and I have since seen him do extremely well in another role as a spoiled drunken dandy in `The Way We Live Now'.) The world needs more of this type of `old fashioned' movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not the 1995 version, but still very well done
    1. This movie is much better than my wife and I expected. To be sure, there are big departures from Jane Austen's book and the tale seems tailored to a modern audience.Nevertheless, we're giving this production five stars, because of its overall impact and flow. The acting and location shots are first-rate and key scenes are so beautifully done.We particularly liked the scene near the end where Elizabeth entreats her father so she might marry Mr. Darcy. She reveals how Darcy is the one who bailed out the Bennett family from Mr. Wickham's debts and also arranged for sister Lydia's marriage. This ending seems more convincing than other versions we've seen because it registers with Mr. Bennett that Darcy is the one who saved the family. If you look it up, the bail-out revelation is in the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect or quite as good as P&P '95, but still enjoyable and recommendable...
I am an avid fan of the 1995 A&E/BBC version of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth. And so, I had my reservations about giving this one a whirl. Most of Hollywood's literary adaptations are underdeveloped, underwhelming and downright superficial.Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow springs to mind. However, this 2005 adaptation directed by Joe Wright and adapted by Deborah Moggach, while not better than the 1995 version, is definitely more enjoyable than the bunch. (Warning: there will be more comparisons between this version and the 1995 version. So, if you're tired of reading comparisons between those two, then I suggest you skip reading this review.)The cinematography is beautiful -- the scenery and sets are a major eyeful. The film direction is one of the best I've seen.Wright has done a splendid job.The music score is also beautiful, one of the best I've heard. The wardrobe, however, is a disappointment. The gowns (more Georgian than Regency) are not appropriate for the time.Elizabeth Bennet would have never attended the Netherfield ball without wearing gloves and Caroline Bingley's sleeveless slip dress with a plunging neckline is downright anachronistic. Not only does it look too modern, a noble lady would have worn such a flimsy gown at a formal ball unless she was some sort of daring widow wanting to cause a scandal. The gowns Mrs. Bennet and Lady Catherine de Bourgh wore were at least two decades or so out of style. And I won't even comment on Judy Dench's hairstyle except for one expression: yikes! That hairdo was fashionable in the 1750s -- at least sixty years before Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice. The quality of the characterization varies from person to person. I do not like Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Bennet.Knightley does not show the right amount of sharp wit, intelligence and conflicting emotions that makes Miss Bennet one of the most endearing heroines in literature. The director concentrates more on Knightley's pretty face than on focusing on the character's complexities. This Elizabeth is too petulant and giggly for my taste.Jennifer Ehle had a better grasp of the character.I did not like Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet. He comes across more as a cynical, laid-back loner than the sarcastic and witty character in the book, qualities that were passed on to Elizabeth.(By the way, I found it odd that in this film Mr. Bennet and Lizzy do not have the kind of closeness and affection that is required in their roles.)Also, his imitation of an English accent is simply awful.I wish Benjamin Whitrow had been cast in this version as well.I also liked the actor who played Mr. Collins in the '95 version better than Tom Hollander.I feel Hollander was miscast for this role. The actors who played Mrs. Bennet, Jane, Mr. Bingley, Caroline Bingley, Lydia and Kitty do a good job, but somehow aren't as colorful as the ones in the 1995 miniseries. And last, but definitely not least, is Matthew Macfadyen as the dark, handsome, proud and brooding Mr. Darcy.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Newt?
One of my favorite comedies, and Monty Python's best and most irreverent movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Monty Python troop made three films and had a television series that challenged the status quo by dealing with religion, class welfare, politics and dead parrots. There humor seems as fresh and rebellious today as when it was aired. Sometimes their humor was forced -- some scenes in The Meaning of Lif(e) ; however, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has the perfect mix of antitoletarism, irreverence and silly sots.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing documentary, but could have been even better
This documentary is absolutely bone-chilling, really providing a powerful and honest look into how war has been waged in the modern era, demonstrating how the American public has been lied to and given propaganda in modern wars, as opposed to just giving them unbiased and truthful information and coverage, and giving the viewer an idea of how war has become more and more about imperialism and neo-Colonialism over time.It was also fascinating to note that the original words in President Eisenhower's great Farewell Address were actually "the military-industrial-congressional complex," but that he changed it so that he wouldn't alienate Congress, whom he'd gotten along pretty well with during his two terms. It's also a surprise to hear such a stinging indictment of military buildup and such a strong warning to exercise military power justly coming from someone who was a 5-star general, a career officer, and a Republican to boot.Sadly, we haven't heeded his wise parting words to us, the same way we haven't paid heed to President Washington's Farewell Address, in which he similarly warned us against getting involved in foreign entanglements and in not abusing our military strength or the nation's great ability to do good instead of evil.I've always thought Eisenhower was a lousy president (though a great general), one of my all-time least-favorite presidents, but my opinion of him was raised a bit after hearing his Farewell Address and finding out his feelings about the dangerous road the military and warfare were taking after WWII, as well as how he was against the dropping of the A-bomb on Japan.
3-0 out of 5 stars Holy Wars Or Constant Killing For Selfish Reasons?
This documentary is based on the Frank Capra films with the same title, "Why We Fight," which was used as propoganda in WWII to entice young American men to join the armed forces. We were displayed as being a force of imperialism and only fighting communism. However, it shows that we have been at constant war in some part of the world almost constantly since the Forties.During WWII, where Dwight Eisenhower was a five-star general, he was all for democracy (though he is a Republican), decency and victory at all costs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awake America and strengthen the things that remain!
Empire building carries a cost. What will it cost America in the end? It has been noted that there seems to be a pattern where the very recognizition that an empire exists is the beginning of its collapse. May we recognize it for what it is before we have too far to fall. Once again we are haunted by the better angels of our past - men who warned us about the cost of not being vigilant.Too long we have been asleep. At last there is a wakeup call, may we not ignore it. ... Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful peice of classic cinema
    What a wonderful movie!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sense and Sensibility
Jane Austen was so wonderful at creating reality on the printed page. She sent up society by spot-on accurate portrayals of it. I feel like stressing this point. It sends up pretension by accurately portraying it. It is humour and realism at the same time. I can think of nobody better at doing this.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fine adaptation that will please most viewers, sans Grant
This film looks beautiful with that particular fresh and green loveliness that typifies the gentlefolk's 18th / 19th century England. It's a delight to watch, and the screenplay itself is wonderfully done, combining the sensible and likeable characters with the truly absurd characters, not to mention those whose characters are morally enfeebled. Jane Austen's depiction of human frailty as well as goodness has always impressed me as being true and very apt, striking home not merely with insightful viewing of human beings but also the very particular aspects that define a person of English gentility in the 1800s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making 400 Years Ago Seem Like Yesterday . . .
Elizabeth Tudor was one of the most psychologically-complex rulers in history.Alternately ignored and embraced by a tyrannical father who had her mother judicially murdered, coming very near to her own youthful death in prison at the hands of her half-sister Queen Mary, and threatened with invasion and assassination attempts throughout her reign, she -- almost uniquely among her contemporaries -- nevertheless steered a course of moderation that brought England through one of the most tumultuous periods in its history and left it poised to begin the reach for empire that was to give England dominance over the 19th century.
5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic performance
hbo hit another homerun of this 2 disks drama.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to get into.
I love Jane Austen's works, and Persuasion, for me, comes next in line after Pride and Prejudice.I think the story is more gentle and you really see a transformation in Anne. The movie, however, I just didn't like. The characters weren't portrayed well and I thought the movie was boring.Anne in the movie had pretty much the same look on her face the whole movie which drove me nuts. The guy who played Capt. Wentworth i thought was too angry most of the time.I really couldn't enjoy this film because I couldn't get over the bad acting.I'd love to see Persuasion redone with hopefully a better result. My advice: read the book and skip the movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, wooden acting

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully subtle and genuinely emotional film
This is clearly one of the most polarising of Jane Austen adaptations on film. Some viewers will love the genuinely moving acting, the authentically costumed characters, the beautiful scenery and sets, the incredible story-telling and the wonderfully subtle touches that abound in this film. Others will loathe the complete absence of makeup, the fact that Amanda Root is visibly older than 29, the slow and tender story, the use of natural lighting and the re-writing of the Mr Elliot sub-plot (including his unforgivably and casually cruel behaviour towards Mrs Smith).

Audrey Tautou makes this film more than what it would be without her. That's not to say that the plot is mediocre but without her the film itself wouldn't have stood out.As Amelie Audrey is wonderfully delightful, a true free spirit and a classic comedic talent. When Amelie finds a hidden tin in her apartment that belonged to a previous tenant she becomes determined to return it and once she has she decides to help others around her, from her father who's always wanted to vacation but never has because of Amelie's supposed heart condition as a child, to her workmate who needs a man.She tries helping an old man in her apartment as well as a tyrant grocer's assistant. But in the end she ends up helping herself for once and everything ends up happy. It's a very sweet story that's elevated by a brilliant performance by Audrey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody is not Trinity butbetter.
I am sure that if you are looking at this then you are a fan of the trinity movies. The Nobody character is based on Trinity but with much more refined.Terence Hill's Nobody has a certain directness and isa much fuller character.Henry Fonda's career in spaghetti westerns often gets overlooked and that is a real shame. If you compare this to his portrayal of Wyatt Earp then you can see that the love of the western never left him. This is much more the Fonda that one loves rather than the villian in "Once upon a Time in The West" (itself a great film).I love showing this to people that have never seen it. They usally like it and then I move on the the Trinity films.

Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 5 for the Movie. 1 for the DVD.
If you're looking at this, you've probably seen the movie as a kid or with your children and want to share it with the next generation. So I won't waste your time with a review of the movie. I loved it and bought it to show my son, since I'm slowly getting rid of my VHS collection.
3-0 out of 5 stars IMAGINITIVE AND FUN
Despite some stilted acting, this is still a wildly imaginitive and fun movie with a great sense of humour. However it does get a little tedious towards the end.

2-0 out of 5 stars not big on mixing musical with fantasy
I never saw this movie until i was 16. The girl i was dating at the time loved this movie. The rocky horror picture show was number one on her list so i tend to compare this one to that one not that the storys are similar in any way. But they do have one thing in common they are both horrible movies. I did give this movie two stars because it had some slightly entertaining moments, well so did fraggle rock! fraggle rock got cancelled for a reason! everyone burn your copies now! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hang on for (to) Dear Life
Coming up with any description for `The Proposition' will be precarious for deterring an audience, and that's a shame.Startlingly brutal, this film takes place in the Outback of Australia during the 1880's, so it really should be called an Eastern, rather than a Western.A revenge story with a vengeance, Captain Morris (Ray Winstone) vows, "I will civilize this land."He's the British equivalent of the partakers of Manifest Destiny and the typical new sheriff, trying to bring law and order in the dry, forsaken land. His iron hand makes the cure seem worse than the lawless contagion.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Ultimate Western
There's nothing like a good western and "The Proposition" delivers the sharp-shooting goods non-stop.Director John Hillcoat has a true knack for thrusting the feel and grit of the Australian Outback in your face and keeping it there. From the first moment of a hardcore gunfight, we soon learn that Capt. Stanley has captured two of the four Burns brothers, noted for their murderous and especially heinous past. The Captain's proposition is for Brother Charlie to find and kill his older brother, Arthur.Otherwise, he will kill his younger brother, Mikey. Thus, Charlie ventures to the Outback. The large scale cinematography makes one feel like dirt is in your mouth and death is at your door. This is not for the timid, as Hillcoat bloodies the landscape just as much as any Clintwood western. It's graphic as hell. The final act shouldn't be a surprise, but Hillcoat pulls off a stunt of `switch and bait' that will make you laugh with shock even as you shake your head in disbelief. This is a classic western by way of a rough, vicious and clever Australia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Doggone Western In The Southern Hemisphere
This 2005 Australian film hit limited theatres in the US last May without much fanfare. Too bad for the filmmakers, because they could have probably done a lot better than a $2 million box office if had they marketed the movie a little bit better. And too bad for the American movie going public, because a much larger audience should have been treated to one of the best movies of the past 2 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's about time
It's about time Piper Perabo was in a decent movie since her embarrassing 'Lost and Delirious' ages ago. Get this movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love at first sight I do believe but as for this film I do not.
This movie was okay but felt that it could have been so much better. The basic concept of the film; Rachel (Piper Perabo) married Heck (Matthew Goode) and on her wedding day falls in love with Lucy (Lena Headey), was a new and exciting concept that should have been used to show the audience that love is good, in any form and between any two people. Instead, it said that love should be gone after at any cost; whether you hurt those you care about or not. To me that sent a not so good message. I never felt the chemistry between Rachel and Lucy, or any sympathy towards them and their love. Instead, I spent the entire movie thinking of Rachel as selfish and irresponsible, not good feelings to have towards your main character.
4-0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable and definately catchy tunes
wow - didn't expect to like this one as much.Piper Perabo and girl meets girl with no tragedy, the guy gets dumped and survives to find better things, happiness and love. Check it out its a cute flick. The steamy scenes could have been a bit more, but all in all cute flick ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awful
This is just awful. And I mean spine-tingingly bad. The songs are so terrible and so insistent that it makes you feel like kicking the TV in. The idea of the film is certainly interesting....certainly if it weren't played out as a musical. But it is and you can just see some of the actors baffled as to the sheer stupidity of what their doing. Some such as Tim Curry revel in the sheer nonsense this film provides. But seriously, those songs are beyond awful. My hatred for them rivals having to listen to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and that's intense. But Kate Bush has made some great songs so that's OK. This however, is the movie equivalent of getting an axe through your spinal cord. How it's achieved cult status is something that will have to go down on the peculiar habits of humans.

2-0 out of 5 stars hey, did any of you dudes catch that they ripped off the plot from clueless?
this is the poorest of the plethora of jane austen adaptations we have undergone the past decade, with gwyneth paltrow stumbling her way through an unfunny retelling of austens classic.fortunately its been 3 weeks since i watched this and ive managed to put the details of WHY i found it distasteful into the nether regions of my mind, but it was a mess.
    1-0 out of 5 stars Clueless .....
Who ripped off who? Emma or Clueless? The entire time I'm watching this movie I'm wondering when Alicia Silverstone is going to pop up.I keep thinking "there's got to be something different coming up" but no... it was pretty much the same exact plotline.I love Gwyneth - but I was not impressed with Emma.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bored to tears.
I hate to give Emma one star because I think Paltrow's performance is flawless and love that british accent she piles on but Emma was so boring, pretentious and completely dowdy as can be. I guess the language just threw me for a loop, too wordy, bland and pointless to me. It's a shame because I thought Emma was going to be a great film, damn those critics! Sorry Gwyneth, you are a great and talented actress but there is nothing to swoon over this drab film. I recommend some other Paltrow films instead: Shallow Hall, Sylvia, Proof and Sliding Doors (welcome back british accent!) Emma will have you drowsy after the first thirty minutes, yawn!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess'sfamous novel is a masterpiece.Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time, Excellent Kubrick Film
First off, this was not an easy bood to make into a movie, but Stanly Kubrick did an excellent job of doing so, not cutting out too many of the details either. This movie was way ahead of it's time, with excellent cinemetography, great acting, and excellent adaptation to script of a book that tells a tale of young Alex and his gang in a world he live raise "ultraviolence".A nice glimpse into the mind of an Antisocial.Rent this, Buy this, worth owning. One of the many of a series of Excellent Kubrick films of the 70's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second movie in a very special trilogy.
I ama fan of Stanley Kubrick, and I can see something very special about this movie, that makes me consider this one as the second installment of a so called, by myself, "trilogy". 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange & The Shining, they three share a feeling of loneliness, a sense of an external consciousness who is watching, from outside the Universe, the characters in the films, there is a feeling of a paranormal environment, manifest by the lighting, the sharp contrast of colors white, blue, red and fog in some of the scenes. And, this special environment is made even more surreal by the very special soundtracks of "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti , "Timesteps" by Wendy Carlos, or thescore in The Shining by Carlos' couple too. Perhaps these three stories are part of the intervention of the Black Monoliths on the development of Mankind...Who knows? Buy these movies, they are highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars great film by kubrick but what else is new
this film is a has a very nice story about a man named alex who loves to rape woman and fighting/stealing,but that all changes when he goes to jail. then while in jail he hears about a thing that a doctor is doing to stop people from being bad. so later the doctor picks alex to be like a ginny pig for this test. he is forced to watch horrable things while hes eyes are forced open. after getting these test alex can one longer be bad because if he does he gets real sick..

3-0 out of 5 stars The Dearly Beloved & the Departed
It's a tale of the living & the dead coming together in holy matromony in Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" In the gothic era of the 19th century in Europe a young man named Victor Van Dort inadvertally reserects a young woman while practing his vows & asumes he is her husband. It's a brilliant comical & romantic vision of the undead & the living, pure genius this film is. Featuring the voice talents of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Gough & Christopher Lee. See Tim Burton's terrific movie of love between life & death

Shy Victor's parents arrange a marriage for him, thinking that he will never marry on his own.His parents are newly rich, so they immediately want to pair him up with someone from old money. They arrange the marriage to Victoria, a young woman who's just as quiet and retiring as Victor. But somehow, in the space of a few minutes, true love ignites between the two.As soon as it does, however, the fates conspire to keep them apart.First Victor can't remember his vows. Then the priest sends him away, saying that Victor doesn't want to marry. Then, when Victor finally practices his vows (thinking he's by himself) and gets them right, he ends up married to a young dead woman who was murdered for her dowry years ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tim Burton at his best!!!
Just like Tim Burton to create such a wonderful masterpiece for an animated movie! Beautiful music! Great plot! and such a great success this movie turned out to be! I saw this in theaters and I loved it! I still can't belive it didn't get the oscar for best animated movie. Wallace and Grommit got it. I am really dissapointed. I've asked alot of people whether this of Wallace and is better and I got alot of responses saying that this was better so it just doesn't make any sense at all why this great movie didn't win. But I still think it should have won and I still love this movie. It's one of Tim Burton's best movies ever. Just like the Nightmare Before Christmas, but even better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars And I Didn't Want To See It
I can't lie; I had already judged Match Point to be a boring girl movie that I was sure I didn't want to see before I even saw the previews. It could have something to do with the fact that every girl I know wanted to see it. The cast is pretty good but something about it just spoke to me and it said I really don't want to even attempt to watch this movie. Anyway I had no choice but to watch it when I was cornered and forced to watch it on movie night and I have to admit that it was pretty good. Though the movie is full of lust, love, the fear of not getting to live a lavish lifestyle because your cheating on your wife, oh and the woman you cheated with is also your brother-in-law's girlfriend.
