1-0 out of 5 stars Bloody awful
This is just awful. And I mean spine-tingingly bad. The songs are so terrible and so insistent that it makes you feel like kicking the TV in. The idea of the film is certainly interesting....certainly if it weren't played out as a musical. But it is and you can just see some of the actors baffled as to the sheer stupidity of what their doing. Some such as Tim Curry revel in the sheer nonsense this film provides. But seriously, those songs are beyond awful. My hatred for them rivals having to listen to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and that's intense. But Kate Bush has made some great songs so that's OK. This however, is the movie equivalent of getting an axe through your spinal cord. How it's achieved cult status is something that will have to go down on the peculiar habits of humans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
A classic! A Must See! Although not really intended for kids my daughter at 4 used to love the music and dance along...now at 14 she still loves the songs but she thinks the movie is kinda corny. Us adults however, love the movie and of course the soundtrack too. Can't help but catch yourself singing along. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Go To Funerals.
Harold and Maude is Hal Ashby's 1971 cult hit. Dividing critics, the film nevertheless collected a massive following, spawned a play on Broadway, and has also given birth to new phrases, "Harolding" and "Maudism".
5-0 out of 5 stars One of THE BEST films to help you face living
Prior to VHS or DVD - back in 1971-75 - when movie theaters (remember those, the ones where it was only $1 for two films and a short and the films were shown in BIG theaters - so what if the sound wasn't Dolby or DTS - films were still films not; just 1 of 10 stock plots enhanced by computer special effects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still Quirky and Funny Black Comedy Tells the Ultimate Opposites-Attracts Love Story
This 1971 black comedy is still a stitch, even if it doesn't feel as audacious as I'm sure it once did. Directed by the maverick Hal Ashby, it is the epitome of all opposites-attract love stories as a twenty-year old depressive connects with a 79-year old life-loving woman. They actually bond over their mutual interest in death, as they keep showing up at the same funerals. However, the root of their respective interests couldn't be more different - Maude shows up to reconfirm how lucky she feels to be alive, while the hearse-driving Harold simply likes the morbidity of it all.

Editorial Review

Director Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) solemnly alerts us to the glory that was Spinal Tap in his introduction to this "rockumentary" about the legendary British heavy-metal group, featuring lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), lead singer David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and a succession of drummers whose careers were cut short by spontaneously combusting on their stool, drowning in somebody else's vomit, or otherwise perishing in untimely fashion. Under DiBergi's studious interrogation, the band and their familiars retrace the band's evolution from head-bopping Mersey Beat poseurs to head-banging metal poseurs, each change in musical direction or tonsorial chic having little effect on the surviving trio's sublime idiocy. For, as St. Hubbins (he's the "deep" one, relatively speaking) sagely observes, "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BAND IS GARBAGE!!!! THAT'S WHY THIS MOVIE IS SOOO FUNNY!!!!!
Most people doesn't realize that this band SUCK'S!!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars 11/10
How to be a part of real Rock History without being a musician, singer, producer or someone in the music business? Answer: Make a movie as this one. Almost every serious Rock fan and rock star must have seen this movie or if they haven't, they had better see it before they go out and give another interview. Believe me, there are bands and performers who still talk and give interviews like Spinal Tap did in this movie. This movie is made for these guys. Like me, if you have watched countless interviews of rockstars, popstars and movie stars you cannot do without this classic. The Lead guitarist was my favourite. I could give him an Oscar for his brilliant performance. If Jimmy Page used a bow on his guitar you must wait and see what the lead guitarist ofSpinal Tap does.
4-0 out of 5 stars "No One Knows Who They Were Or What They Were Doing, But Their Legacy Remains"
A seering exploration of life behind the glitz and glamour of rock and roll? Not quite, but it is an amusing mock-u-mentry on a fictitious band named Spinal Tap and the trials and tribulations on the concert road for a group long past its glory days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Better
For me, this movie is both classic in a theatrical sense and in a personal way. As the daughter of a Hitler historian, I spent my childhood listening to my father discussing not only 'Der Führer,' but the opposite end of the spectrum in Josef Stalin. He discussed the Cold War in depth with me, and by the time I was in middle school, I knew more about the Red Menace that most of my classmates combined. For me, however, the Red Menace was almost like a joke--the Cold War was over, communism didn't have a good foothold anywhere, and it seemed like the end of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great And Funny Horror Classic: Belongs In Every Collection!
This is one the greatest horror classics of all time. Ash (Bruce Campbell) pulls it off as the bumbling hero in this third entry of the Evil Dead Trilogy. I have seen the film many times, and yet never tire of viewing it. I must say I was delighted and pleased when I watched the film in the theatres, and laughed at the entire film's concept of humor that was put into it. Being catapulted back into 14th-century and having to battle the evil forces of the dead are just great.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic.
The third installment of the "Evil Dead" series find hero Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) transported to the Middle Ages, where he is enlisted by the English Army to aid in a battle against The Deadites, a horrific group of zombies intent on destroying England. Ash agress to play along in return for a way to get home. What ensues is one of the greatest action / comedy movies ever made. Bruce Campbell plays Ash better than ever, delivering many a classic line and owning the screen. The special effects are awesome, and the film as a whole is timeless. A must have.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Version sucks if you saw the initial version
OK...this version is only good if you cannot get hold of the 2 disc version or the original release. It's had too much cut out and changed that made the film a classic! This is not as funny and has removed many of the "Cult" lines. Only buy this one if you don't wish to pay more...or can't find the 2 disc:)

5-0 out of 5 stars A besmirching of Nathan Arizona's true character refuted
Hi, I'm not one to rain on any one's parade, but if you watch the movie again, you will notice that Nathan Sr. does not and would not ever hire Leonard Smalls to retrieve little Nathan Jr.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'RAISING ARIZONA' a comedy beyond 'any'
Raising Arizona is one of my favourite comedies of all time. Nic Cage & Holly Hunter work well together. They are two of my favourites as well. The film never gets boring. It is full of low IQs, surprising twists and non-stop humour. The film is supported by John Goodman and Trey Wilson who do a great job as two escaped convictes who crashes at Nic & Holly crib.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, yet not laugh out loud
I must say that I really did enjoy Clerks yet, to my surprise, it was not the laugh out loud movie I thought it would be. It certainly had the charactics of a film students class project. It allowed you to capture the sense of monotany that everyday retail clerks can relate to, while at the sametime showing the real fun of working in a retail situation. I don't mean to sound like I was disapointed, I certainly was not, I just was expecting something different considering all of the hype I had heard. Jay and Silent Bob are certainly a funny pair, just not bust out loud in this perticular appearance. (see this BEFORE you see the sequal)

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent example of sketch comedy!
Before the Zucker Brothers made it big with Airplane!, they created Kentucky Fried Movie. It is made of random hilarious skits that have instantly made it a cult classic since its release.I had heard about this movie from many of my friends and eventually set out and bought it.For the $10 I paid, this movie was worth every penny. It's a laughfest from start to finish. My only complaint is that the Fistful Of Yen/ Enter The Dragon parody could have been way shorter as it was a movie within a movie.I actually became very sleepy the first time I watched that scene, but I was able to snap myself out of it and enjoy the rest of the film. The only reason that this movie isn't five stars is because of the Fistful of Yen scene being too long which ruins the pace of the film and that I feel that a movie like this deserves more special features, though that does keep the price low and reasonable. If you haven't seen this and love the movies Ariplane! and Naked Gun and are a Monty Python fan, you MUST check this movie out.Hoped this helped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cult Classic
The first time I saw this film was back in high school, over 20 years ago.At that time we thought that this was the craziest movie we had ever seen and whoever it was who had written the script and made such an off the wall film was somewhat insane himself.Yet, we were hysterically laughing throughout the entire film.Upon watching the movie again, years later, nothing had changed.I still found myself laughing throughout the entire movie. It was just as off-beat as before. It is a great cult classic and I would definitely recommend this film to others.

Editorial Review

If you're not a connoisseur of graphic horror and gruesome gore, you'd better steer clear of this wicked 1992 horror-comedy from the demented mind and delirious camera of New Zealand-born writer-director Peter Jackson. However, if nonstop mayhem and extreme violence are your idea of great entertainment, you're sure to appreciate Jackson's gleefully inventive approach to a story that can judiciously be described as sick, twisted, and totally outrageous. The movie's central character is a poor schmuck named Lionel who's practically enslaved to his domineering mother. But when ol' Mum gets bitten by a rare and poisonous rat monkey from Skull Island and is turned into a flesh-eating zombie, Lionel has the unfortunate task of keeping Mama happy while fending off all the other zombies that result from her voracious feeding frenzies. If you've read this far, you'll either be crying out for censorship or eagerly awaiting your first viewing (or second, or third...) of this wildly clever and audaciously uninhibited movie. And while director Jackson would later achieve critical success with his fact-based drama Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most ketchup used in a film
This is one of my favorite movies (but then again, I like dead baby jokes). If I remember correctly, the back of the DVD says how much ketchup was used in filming and that it was the most ever. But don't let this throw you off...it's not about the gore and cheesy effects...it's a black comedy about relationships while being a very clever spoof on horror films. If you've got a strong stomach and love laughing, this movie's for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dementedly funny and gorey
I really thought i'd be in for a more dark, gorey film, but..I wasn't...Instead, it is a crazy, demented (British?) film about a different breed of zombies not like the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD type.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Television
Funnyman Weird Al Yankovic dominates the airways in the humorous 1989 cult comedy "UHF".George Newman (Yankovic) is a hapless daydreamer who becomes the new manager of a run-down UHF TV station. Facing the possibility of bankruptcy, George changes the station's programming with an outrageous lineup of shows like "Wheel of Fish" and "Raul's Wild Kingdom" and turns Channel 62 into the most successful TV station in town. "UHF" is an enjoyable comedy that shows off Weird Al Yankovic's brand of humor. Though it failed in theaters, this silly comedy gained a solid fan following upon television airings and home video release. "UHF" has some amusing characters and hilarious parodies of blockbuster movies, music videos, commercials and game shows. It also stars Michael Richards (Seinfeld), Victoria Jackson (SNL), Fran Drescher (The Nanny) and Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers).

This dark comedy from 1989 was a good showcase for Winona Ryder, playing a high school girl brought into a clique of bitchy classmates (all named Heather), and Christian Slater, doing his early Jack Nicholson thing. While Ryder's character mulls over the consequences of giving up one set of friends for another, her association with a new boy (Slater) in school turns out to have deadly consequences. Director Michael Lehmann turned this unusual film into something more than another teen-death flick. There is real wit and sharp satire afoot, and the very fusion of horror and comedy is provocative in itself. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie
I remember watching this movie a few years back. I thought it was decent overall. But my biggest question is if Jason hated the world so much, why didn't he blow himself up inside the gym?

3-0 out of 5 stars I hate three star reviews.
Daniel Waters had fun nailing the lingering hostile fantasies of High Schoolers. There is a spark of brilliance to it. Christian Slater's character begins as a composite over-the-top iconoclast; embodiment of the teenage rebel. Winona Rider is quite charming in her role as the trapped socialite. And the film builds a lot of capital by cross-polinating 1950s aesthetics with 1980s vernacular. To many, this meant the film was "brilliant", Tim Burton included as he chose Waters to write Batman Returns.

This film was a touchstone of the late 1960s, when it was seen as an antiwar allegory for a world in which madness seemed to reign. Of course, that would probably be true whenever this movie was shown, wouldn't it? Directed by Philippe de Broca and set during World War I, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'King of Hearts' is King in My Heart
I have been going to the movies for a long, long time...starting in the late 1930's.'King of Hearts' is very near the top of my list of favorites and I was delighted to be able to obtain my very own copy. The premise asks the question, 'Who is Really Crazy? The gentle souls confined to an insane asylum or the warmongers on the battlefield?'Though the actions of the actors is comedic and amusing, this can hardly be defined as a comedy. It causes one to think a great deal about a very serious subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE URGENT THOUGH LESS POPULAR MESSAGE NOW THAN IN THE SIXTIES
We in the Sixties cheered this film heartily.
5-0 out of 5 stars A FUN movie
I have learned from previous reviews that the movie has an antiwar message. When I watched the movie, my attention was held by its humor and entertainment.I was introduced to the film by a rental, and decided to buy it to replay when I was looking for a good laugh. ... Read more

Cheech & Chong's first cannabis comedy is also their best, a souvenir from the more carefree days before "Just Say No," when people did not feel so defensive about inhaling. In 1978, the prevailing spirit was more like "Just Say Blow." Even Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I miss the 1970's...
You could get away with making a film like this back in the 1970's, where people weren't so rigid, uptight, and STUPID.This is a hilarious film about 2 stoners. There's no "moral message", there's no gratuitous violence, there's no political correctness, there are no stupid teenagers, and there's no degree of seriousness whatsoever. It's a hilarious piece of filmmaking. This film, along with Things Are Tough All Over, are Cheech and Chong's two finest films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheech & Chong's first movie goes out with a bang
Cheech & Chong already had a bunch of albums under their belts since 1971, so they weren't exactly new when Up in Smoke hit the theaters in September, 1978. I had often seen this movie on network TV, unfortunately, it was so drastically butchered because they had to censor a lot, not to mention all the commercials. But of course I had to get this movie on VHS or DVD. I ended up with the DVD, which has some bonus features, including a bunch of unused clips, and even audio commentary from Lou Adler and Cheech Marin about the movie, and I actually got some useful info from them about the movie, and some trivia along with it (like the VW Beetle Tommy Chong was driving with the Rolls Royce radiator strapped on the front near the beginning of the film actually belonged to Jack Nicholson).

I love this movie. This has got to be one of my all-time favorites. It's hilariously funny and every time I watch it I get this fuzzy feeling inside and it makes me go 'Squee!' ... Read more

Director John Waters creates here a wickedly funny--and nasty--comedy starring Kathleen Turner as the ultimate suburbanite: a woman so obsessed with suburban perfection that she kills a neighbor for not separating her recyclables. Hubby Sam Waterston and kids Matthew Lillard and Ricki Lake don't have a clue that in fact it is squeaky-clean mom who is the killer at large in their Baltimore neighborhood and who has murdered, among others, the guy who dumped her daughter. The final courtroom scene is a riot, turning her into a celebrity defendant (long before O.J.) and featuring a terrific cameo by Patty Hearst (yes, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Over-the-Top, But That's the Point
When people (mostly critics) mention two John Waters films they say Hairspray and Serial Mom. The first John Waters film I ever saw was "Pink Flamingos" and until I watched this, that film was the only one I had seen. Waters made that film (commonly called the most disgusting film ever made and rightly so) to get his name out there; His plan worked. He never made a film like that movie, but he still makes films with the intention of shocking his audience. Serial Mom is a comedy that is very over-the-top and has a lot to say about the media. Having only seen Pink Flamingos, I can't believe the same person wrote and directed both of these movies. They both have a strange vision for sure, but they're very different films. Kathleen Turner ('The Virgin Suicides') plays Beverly Sutphin is the definition of a perfect suburban mom. She's like those characters you see in 60's television shows like Leave It to Beaver. She has a loving husband (Sam Waterston)and two children (Ricki Lake and Scooby Doo's Matthew Lillard) Misty and Chip. Everything seems perfect; Then two detectives show up at the Sutphin household to ask Beverly about obscene phone calls her neighbor Dottie (Mink Stole, who worked with Waters on Pink Flamingos as Connie Marble)has been getting. But, Beverly couldn't possibly be making such calls. Or is she? Pretty soon, obscene phone calls escalate to murder, which begins with her son Chip's math teacher. When Beverly is finally arrested after a series of murders, the film really goes over-the-top. The movie isn't perfect; Kathleen Turner is perfect as Beverly Sutphin, but the movie has its share of flaws. It's not hilariously funny, it's mildly funny. The comedy is more to be appreciated than to be enjoyed. This movie is entertaining and it's funny how true most of this stuff is. Look for cameos by former porn star Traci Lords and John Waters as the voice of Ted Bundy. If you like Waters' stuff, check this movie out. If you don't, stay away.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best comedies ever.
This film was made in 1994, a few years after "Cry-Baby". John Waters has a Hollywood sized budget to work with and continues his path to more "mainstream" targeted movies. But for those fans who fear this would compromise Waters' humour - don't worry, it doesn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Black Comedy Ever!
I love Kathleen Turner, so when I saw this movie at the store I knew I had to have it. After I got home and watched it I loved.

1-0 out of 5 stars PAINFULL AND WEAK...
THE MONKEES HAD SOME GOOD TUNES AND I WAS A FAN OF THE TV SHOW BUT THERE ISN'T E-NUFF DRUGS TO MAKE THIS FILM ENJOYABLE..FRANK ZAPPA IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS FILM AND HIS APPERANCE IS ONLY A FEW SECONDS LONG...IF THEY'D ONLY TAKEN FRANK'S ADVICE THAT "YOU BOYS NEED TO WORK ON YER' MUSIC." WAIT FOR IT TO COME ON CABLE AND EVEN THEN DON'T BUY A "NEW" VHS TAPE IF YOU NEED IT FOR YER' ARCHIVES...

5-0 out of 5 stars Head trip
A great movie. If you're a Monkees fan you'll get it. Even if you're not, you should get what it's saying about life in general. Why hasn't Rhino released a special edition widescreen version of it for the 40th anniversary?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun And Entertaining Horror Spoof!
This is a highly recommended film. "Tremors" is one of those type of films that is recommended for one of those relaxing and fun afternoons you just want to laugh and not take things too seriously. (Fred Ward) and his best friend (Kevin Bacon) give outstanding performances as two not-too-bright friends who happen to stumble upon a creature [much like a giant worm] that is eating their town away--literally! And not just the town, but the occupants also. This is a very recommended film. It is not gory [not too much anyhow] and the silliness is a warm and welcome relief. Further, the film is not just a horror flick in the usual sense, but horror with lot's of comedy. Fred Ward's character had me in stitches several times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny
I thought this movie was hilarious. The two main characters Val and Earl were the best part. Everytime they tried to leave Perfection, something would stop them. "We just waited one day too long to leave"
5-0 out of 5 stars Great monstrous fun
TREMORS is arguably the best science-fiction/monster movie of at least the past quarter-century -- only ALIENS, a different sort of beast altogether, comes close.Avoid the sequels (you have been warned), but don't miss the perfectly written, mounted, directed, and acted original. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey at there best
I have to say out of all the Mike Myers and Dana Carvey movies I've seen this has got to be the best. Straight from Saturday Night Live Wayne's World delivers laugh after laugh.Join the fun as you watch Wayne and Garth go from public acess cable show to a huge late night show, and encounter the problems that come along with it. I just love this movie. I can't even estimate how many times I've watched since I got it on DVD last year. No matter how many times you watch it, It'll always find a way to bring a smile to your face.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREME CLOSE-UP!AAAGGGHHH!!!!
Man, this movie is pure gold.Mike Myers is, as always, hilarious, and Dana Carvey, who I once thought sucked after seeing The Master of Disguise, earned my respect. This movie is just painfully funny, extremely fun and never crosses the line of what's funny and what's not.Don't even think about renting it; just pick it up at the store. Most places have it for under $10!I can't wait to see Wayne's World 2!

5-0 out of 5 stars The single greatest comedy film EVER!!!
I have seen this easily a hundred times. I am not exaggerating! I know every single line. I could write the script, compare it to the real one, and not notice a difference. The first time I watched this there was non-stop-rolling-on-the-floor-cramped-stomach-aching-cheeks hysterical laughter!!! And there still is!!

5-0 out of 5 stars funniest british movie of all time
as some commentators have mentioned above this film works on several levels.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rejuvenate? I'm in a park and I'm practically dead
Right from King Curtis over the opening credits I couldn't take my ears off this film and when Withnail told the farmer that they'd gone on holiday by mistake I almost choked on my own Camberwell Carrot. And hair really are our aerials, I know that now. All this and Jimi Hendrix too. Nice one Bruce. Magic book too, that Thomas Penman--I read it round about every Autumn and it hasn't failed yet to leave me in stitches. A bit like the movie really. ... Read more
