This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie today as much as I loved it when I was 10....
I saw this movie for the first time when I was something like 10 years old, and immediately fell in love with Anne Shirley. I have now read everything by L.M. Montgomery that I can get my hands on, and am as big a fan as ever. This movie is a beautiful version of a beautiful book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Way things should be
"Anne of Green Gables" shows how a combination of love, honesty, hard work, tolerance and integrity is the perfect mix for bringing out the best from the potential in anyone, even in a non-traditional family. It's an incredibly refreshing break from today's society, where lying and manipulation have become almost a norm in much of the world we know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic
All the great reviews written previously say it all - Anne of Green Gables the movie is a timeless classic of the classic novel. I've been watching this movie since I've been a child, and I still watch it as an adult. A movie like this doesn't need "special features" for it to be attractive as a DVD(Although the commentary is great!). Just the fact that no matter how long I keep this and how often I watch this movie, it won't change like VHS does. ... Read more

Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful peice of classic cinema
    What a wonderful movie!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sense and Sensibility
Jane Austen was so wonderful at creating reality on the printed page. She sent up society by spot-on accurate portrayals of it. I feel like stressing this point. It sends up pretension by accurately portraying it. It is humour and realism at the same time. I can think of nobody better at doing this.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fine adaptation that will please most viewers, sans Grant
This film looks beautiful with that particular fresh and green loveliness that typifies the gentlefolk's 18th / 19th century England. It's a delight to watch, and the screenplay itself is wonderfully done, combining the sensible and likeable characters with the truly absurd characters, not to mention those whose characters are morally enfeebled. Jane Austen's depiction of human frailty as well as goodness has always impressed me as being true and very apt, striking home not merely with insightful viewing of human beings but also the very particular aspects that define a person of English gentility in the 1800s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making 400 Years Ago Seem Like Yesterday . . .
Elizabeth Tudor was one of the most psychologically-complex rulers in history.Alternately ignored and embraced by a tyrannical father who had her mother judicially murdered, coming very near to her own youthful death in prison at the hands of her half-sister Queen Mary, and threatened with invasion and assassination attempts throughout her reign, she -- almost uniquely among her contemporaries -- nevertheless steered a course of moderation that brought England through one of the most tumultuous periods in its history and left it poised to begin the reach for empire that was to give England dominance over the 19th century.
5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic performance
hbo hit another homerun of this 2 disks drama.
5-0 out of 5 stars A not to be missed biography......
This is one the best biographies of Elizabeth I have seen. Most take immense liberties with the actual history but this one laid it all out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to get into.
I love Jane Austen's works, and Persuasion, for me, comes next in line after Pride and Prejudice.I think the story is more gentle and you really see a transformation in Anne. The movie, however, I just didn't like. The characters weren't portrayed well and I thought the movie was boring.Anne in the movie had pretty much the same look on her face the whole movie which drove me nuts. The guy who played Capt. Wentworth i thought was too angry most of the time.I really couldn't enjoy this film because I couldn't get over the bad acting.I'd love to see Persuasion redone with hopefully a better result. My advice: read the book and skip the movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, wooden acting

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully subtle and genuinely emotional film
This is clearly one of the most polarising of Jane Austen adaptations on film. Some viewers will love the genuinely moving acting, the authentically costumed characters, the beautiful scenery and sets, the incredible story-telling and the wonderfully subtle touches that abound in this film. Others will loathe the complete absence of makeup, the fact that Amanda Root is visibly older than 29, the slow and tender story, the use of natural lighting and the re-writing of the Mr Elliot sub-plot (including his unforgivably and casually cruel behaviour towards Mrs Smith).

2-0 out of 5 stars hey, did any of you dudes catch that they ripped off the plot from clueless?
this is the poorest of the plethora of jane austen adaptations we have undergone the past decade, with gwyneth paltrow stumbling her way through an unfunny retelling of austens classic.fortunately its been 3 weeks since i watched this and ive managed to put the details of WHY i found it distasteful into the nether regions of my mind, but it was a mess.
    1-0 out of 5 stars Clueless .....
Who ripped off who? Emma or Clueless? The entire time I'm watching this movie I'm wondering when Alicia Silverstone is going to pop up.I keep thinking "there's got to be something different coming up" but no... it was pretty much the same exact plotline.I love Gwyneth - but I was not impressed with Emma.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bored to tears.
I hate to give Emma one star because I think Paltrow's performance is flawless and love that british accent she piles on but Emma was so boring, pretentious and completely dowdy as can be. I guess the language just threw me for a loop, too wordy, bland and pointless to me. It's a shame because I thought Emma was going to be a great film, damn those critics! Sorry Gwyneth, you are a great and talented actress but there is nothing to swoon over this drab film. I recommend some other Paltrow films instead: Shallow Hall, Sylvia, Proof and Sliding Doors (welcome back british accent!) Emma will have you drowsy after the first thirty minutes, yawn!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Movie
I saw this movie years ago and could not get it off my mind. I finally took the plunge and bought it. It is just as I remember. Not quite as exciting as it was back then, with all the new stuff that is out now.BUT, everything taken into consideration, it is still a classic and not a bad piece of work. The viewer will actually learn a little history -- not 100% fact, but there is some historical fact intertwined with the storyline of pagan ROME.

3-0 out of 5 stars Elaborate Porn
I didn't realize that Bob Guccione (Penthouse) produced this, and now it all makes sense.Caligula's story is just a backdrop for the most elaborate porn film ever made. It's extremely graphic, in sex and violence, but not as gory as I expected. ("Gladiator" is far bloodier.) As a history lesson, I'd give it a C. We don't learn much about why Caligula turned out the way he did, just that he was indeed monstrous. The incestuous relationship between Caligula and his sister Drusilla takes center stage, while various episodes of Caligula's bizarre behavior round out the drama.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pure perversion
I didn't think of it much as a movie as I did a porn frenzy. I'm very much interested in history and also psychology and neither was apparent to me in this movie other than we know Caligula was nuts. Otherwise, then I guess so was all of the Roman Empire. I simply cannot believe one stroll down the streets would produce such frenzy. It was stupid, simple and as soon as it was done I immediately threw it out. Not for the faint of heart. Not for the sophisticated either. Or anywhere in between. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Brutality.
Life is hard and difficult.Unfortunately, for many people in the world life is also unbearably brutal.Living in the United States we often forget that, even if we grew up in impoverished small towns or in the slums of the inner city.CITY OF GOD is a film that examines the brutality of humanity in a housing project that is part of Rio de Janeiro.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a movie, but also a Social Project
The movie was shot in one of the "favelas" in Rio de Janeiro, my home town... I used to drive by it all the time when going to the beach.

David Lean focused all his talent as an epic-maker on Boris Pasternak's sweeping novel about a doctor-poet in revolutionary Russia. The results may sometimes veer toward soap opera, especially with the screen frequently filled with adoring close-ups of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, but Lean's gift for cramming the screen with spectacle is not to be denied. The streets of Moscow, the snowy steppes of Russia, the house in the country taken over by ice; these are re-created with Lean's unerring sense of grandness. The movie is so lush and so long that it becomes an irresistible wallow, even when logic suffers--like Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD for an Amazing movie
It was more than 16 years since I watched Dr. Zhivago on a Betamax.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Hollywood's Great Epic Films
DR. ZHIVAGO was one of the last great epic films produced by Hollywood. In the 1950's and 60's, a string of films were produced that resembled closely resembled grand opera without music: the casts were large, the stories intricate, and the settings spectacular. Some were great successes such as BEN HUR. Others are notable disasters, with CLEOPATRA perhaps being the best known example. DR. ZHIVAGO may be the most enduring of these epic films. It's based on a novel by Boris Pasternak that was banned in the USSR which only added to the fascination of audiences in the United States. The film boasts of an all star cast. It has one of the most beloved musical scores. It seems that no expense was spared in the filming. It was also a bit shocking for some American audiences in terms of material. Few American films in the early 1960's dealt with a man who loved two women with love scenes to boot! Of course it would be tame and perhaps too simplistic fare for an audience of today, but it was daring at the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epic
A powerful, sweeping movie that makes a character out of the Russian landscape, Doctor Zhivago is about a man broken by the times he inhabits.Set around the time of the Bolshevik Revolution we're introduced to our main players - Zhivago, the good doctor; Tonya, the faithful wife; and Lara, the beauty who steals men's hearts. The three and a half hour run time allows plenty of room for side plots, but the main tale is of Zhivago's path crossing with Lara on several occasions - through chance, through war, and through communist desperation - and how his marital fidelity is eventually defeated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute masterpiece
This film is better than anything else I've reviewed this week, or in a very long time. But you want details, so here we go.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Film
Life is Beautiful is a film by Roberto Benigni, which really showcases his talent before he made an embarassing stab at playing Pinocchio. "Life is Beautiful" is probably my favorite Foreign film (I've only seen probably 5 though); It's funny, heartfelt, has wonderful performances, and is all around a joy to watch. It also happens to be a layered film, that goes in one direction before veering off into another but never losing it's charm. Benigni plays Guido, a waiter with a humorous streak. After Guido contantly stumbles into Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), he falls in love with her and the movie (with no warning) flashes forward a number of years. This first half of the film (which is a little over 50 minutes) is pretty much a romantic-comedy. The second half is quite different. In the second half, Guido and Dora (who now have a young son named Joshua) live in Italy which is overrun with Germans. Subsequently, Guido and Joshua are taken into a concentration camp; Dora also goes to the camp, but under different circumstances which are a bit unbelievable but still a nice part of the story. Anyway, Guido employs his quick-wit to keep his son from the horrors of the camp; Guido tells Josh that it's actually an elaborate game and that he must avoid being seen. If, at the end, he does everything he's told and racks up the most "points" he will get a tank. Benigni (who is also the co-writer and director) does something that's never been done. He takes a horrifying setting (a concentration camp) and turns it into a comedy, without exploting anything and without losing heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Be happy that weare HERE.
Despite the holocaust that can happen to anybody, this movie shows deeply that as a child, everything you see around you is in it's nature. The heart of a child can feel the joy of living, while we (grown-up children) often look for the shade or nuance of everything....we judge, compare, condemn and critic. We are duped by all the happenings around.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fairy tale everyone will love.
I never liked fairy tales, but I love this one. Although it has a strange twist of mixing real life with fairy tale, it shows how two ordinary people use their wit to survive in a not so ordinary world and get back to their own. I wish there was another one, this story was great!

5-0 out of 5 stars The mother of all fairy tales
This is one of the most amazing movies ever! Combines several fairy tales into one...amazing cast and effects as well. Quite long, but totally worth it..!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fairy Tale Adventure-You won't want to miss!
This is one of the best DVD's! It was a fun adventure that traversed through many legendary kingdoms in the world of make-believe. The plot moves from one adventure to the next, whilewe watch as the romance between Virginia and Woolfy blossoms! In this land Cinderella and Snow White are part of a bigger plot to takeover all of the kingdoms by Snow White's wicked step-mother.It is definitely alot of fun to get lost in the magic! A fun book that takes place in a far off land is The North Kingdom by Jordan N. Danniels. The reader travels in and out of many subplots until the major plot takes the reader towards a surprise ending. I could not put it down-between these two strories about magical kingdoms, one will have an exciting adventure that they won't want to end! ... Read more

This movie is not as faithful to the book as some would like, but it is a wonderful film and story in its own right.Mansfield Park is very moving and exciting. The acting and directing is wonderful and I was facinated by the connections between British society and the profits of slavery and sugar cane holding it up in its colonies.Fanny Brice is a very wonderful character and I loved seeing many popular British actors in this movie.Lindsay Duncan plays a dual role and James Purefoy from Rome are in this movie. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful intellectual and ethical exercise...
This is one of my favorite films from the '60's, and I saw a superb stage production of it as well, two years before the film version. Sir Thomas More, chancellor of England, is asked to choose between his King and his Catholic Church. He refuses to take a side, publicly, but everyone in the nation knows he opposes King Henry's decision to break with the Pope so that he can marry another wife. How More (Paul Schofield) tries to stay alive via a silence that shouts a rebuke makes for compelling drama. A young Robert Shaw does a flamboyant and wonderful job as King Henry, but then, the entire supporting cast, as is common in British productions, is great. Faith and greed, power and the loss of it, survival and sacrifice...all are elements of this fine film.
5-0 out of 5 stars A courageous and moral man - Thomas More
A 1966 period movie with a true story about a man who stands up against powerful King Henry VIII and many others for his moral beliefs in regard to divorce. The king wanted a male heir and wanted to divorce his wife and take another one to achieve that.He was trying to get the church's permission to get out of this marriage with their approval. The stand Thomas More takes complicates his life in many ways, including his family and friends.More is an influential man of some means who was high in the leadership of England at that time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Would St. Thomas More really be any more popular today?
The technical excellence of this film on every level has already been sufficiently and deservedly documented many times over.

The fractured Europe post-World War II is perfectly captured in Carol Reed's masterpiece thriller, set in a Vienna still shell-shocked from battle. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) is an alcoholic pulp writer come to visit his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles). But when Cotton first arrives in Vienna, Lime's funeral is under way. From Lime's girlfriend and an occupying British officer, Martins learns of allegations of Lime's involvement in racketeering, which Martins vows to clear from his friend's reputation. As he is drawn deeper into postwar intrigue, Martins finds layer under layer of deception, which he desperately tries to sort out. Welles's long-delayed entrance in the film has become one of the hallmarks of modern cinematography, and it is just one of dozens of cockeyed camera angles that seem to mirror the off-kilter postwar society. Cotten and Welles give career-making performances, and the Anton Karas zither theme will haunt you. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Next Time We'll Have A Foolproof Coffin.
The Third Man is a 1949 film noir. Winner of the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival as well as an Oscar for "Best Black & White Cinematography", Carol Reed's The Third Man is often held as one of the best films ever made. The American Film Institute even ranked the picture as 57th on its list of the one hundred best American movies, quite ironic seeing as The Third Man is technically a British film.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Third Man
    "The Third Man" has long been considered a crowning achievement in movies. It's a suspense film that you can rank right up there with the best of Hitchcock, it stars (well, it says he stars...But he has limited screen time) the writer/director of "Citizen Kane" Orson Welles, and it's an all around great movie. It's featured in Roger Ebert's "The Great Movies" and it's #57 on The American Film Institute's Top 100. This movie might actually be more entertaining than Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane." But, I'm getting to far ahead of myself. Joseph Cotten plays Holly Martins, a writer who has no money and is running out of options. His childhood friend Harry Lime (Welles) is living in Vienna and offers Martins a lot of money to come do some work with him. When Martins arrives, Lime is dead...He was hit by a car. As Martins begin asking questions and learning revelations, he realizes that Lime's death was no accident. Police reports say that there were only two men with Harry Lime when he died; But one witness says there was a third man. As Martins searches for the third man, he falls for Lime's girlfriend Anna and disputes with the police over who has the right source of information. The movie's plot is smart, strong, and very well-written. The movie is suspenseful, well-acted, and well-shot. Three things are what really fuels the movie though. Dialogue, cinematography, and acting. Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins is great and the moment Orson Welles finally appears is a triumphant moment in cinema. The movie is a straight-forward suspense film in the end though. It doesn't dwell on a love story, but instead on the mystery of the third man. There is definitely a love interest and everything in the film, but the film doesn't linger on it. I've seen about 30 of the films on A.F.I.'s Top 100 and this is one of the few I can pick and honestly say that it should be higher up. Anyway, as for the DVD itself. The picture quality is suberb, it's really damn-near flawless. Sound quality is perfect, subtitles are great;

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this a lot, but not everybody responds to it...
This is, in my view, a funny, well-acted look at what might have happened to Will Shakespeare if women were to act in his plays way back in the day...one of them might have looked like Gwyneth Paltrow, and they might have fallen for each other. Perhaps one has to be open to Shakespeare, interested in acting, attracted to the England of 400 years ago, and have a patient ear for archaic English dialogue to really love it. If that describes you, don't miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and educational
I first saw this movie some years ago but only seriously started reading about Shakespeare, his life and times since then. Recently I had the opportunity to see the movie again, this time on DVD. The movie, although an imaginative creation, is well rooted in historical realities. Shakespeare was a commercial artist in commercial theatre, Shakespeare's plays were the popular entertainment of his day, the City of London regularly threatened the 'low brow' theatre entertainment industry with closure, Shakespeare often wrote parts for his favourite actors and his theatre's stars. All these aspects are illustrated in this rollicking screen play. And it leaves us with the question, surely Shakespeare must have been in love to write of love so passionately.
4-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare!
The writing is excellent. It's a simple story. Shakespeare is writing what will become ROMEO AND JULIET and he has a bit of writer's block. Then he falls in love and the words flow. But this simple story allows the writers to interweave "behind the scenes" with their favorite bits of Shakespeare himself. An accurate portrayal of the time in which he wrote, and the fact that he was basically just a working stiff trying to get by. A lot of clever jokes that someone knowledgeable about Shakespeare will enjoy, and far more clever jokes that someone who knows absolutely nothing about the master will also appreciate. Acknowledgement of the theories claiming someone else wrote his plays, and a much subtler rebuttal than I'd give. Exposure to the glorious language that flowed from Shakespeare's pen. The plot is contrived at times, but no more so than a few that Shakespeare himself gave us. This movie is a joy to watch.

When I first started watching this movie I was completly entranced.Halfway through I had to stop the movie becuase my family and I were going to the theatre to see another movie. The whole time I kept thinking of The Scarlet Pimpernel and was wondering what was going to happen. When I got back from the other movie, which, by the way, paled in comparison, I asked my brother where I could possibly buy this movie for cheap, becuase I do not have that much money. He then told me it frequently went in and out of print and that got me worried. So I went to the only place that I thought would have the movie, Amazon.com.[...]It arrived with perfect timing and the DVD works like any newly bought movie from a video store.Hopefully this review has helped someone to decide in buying this movie, which is clean, hilrious, and romantic and appropriate for everyone. It is now one of my FAVORITE movies. Thanks for reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars European Arthouse Movie Par Excellence
"Intimacy" is sexually explicit and raw, as one would almost expect from a European "art-house" movie. The sex scenes aren't really the focal point of the movie -- it merely establishes the setting for our protagonists, Jay and Claire. The story becomes quite intriguing as Jay decides that he wants more than just anonymous weekly romp with Claire. Acting by Timothy Spall is excellent as usual. He is awesome in serious roles.

4-0 out of 5 stars "We better not go too far, we'll loose money" is the bottom line in Hollywood.
Intimacy isn't about titillation or tanned toned Hollywood studs and babes having perfectly choreographed sex in beautiful lighting while poor piano music plays. Instead it's about an ordinary pair of people seeking solace in a purely physical relationship. Both are empty individuals and briefly find something to fire them in their weekly sexual meetings. Nothing is said but there is a purity of understanding. 5-0 out of 5 stars My kind of movie...

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Costumes; Odd Plot-- Disappointed at Ormewood Terrace.
I absolutely love period movies and the effort taken to make this film was extraordinary. As much as I am about to share with you my disappointment with the film-- I did not want it to end. But perhaps therein lies the problem. Maybe I am missing a disc or so (or maybe amazon should make it clear that it is only making available, in the disc set, the first few episodes of the series) but what was provided in this set leaves a plethora of unresolved issues. The major downfall of the series for me was the role and actual acting of the central protaganist, Molly Gibson (played by Justine Waddell). Her character was so unrelentingly judgmental and self righteous that I think it comprised the entire enjoyability of the storyline. Perhaps Ms. Waddell indeed played the part of Molly Gibson artfully but it was without resolution or development. There was no complexity to her character. The last disc leaves you wondering -- so, does it ever come out that Molly is in love with the archeologist? Does he marry her beautiful sister? I love drama and there was a lot of drama present in the series -- however it was like drama without a purpose. The entire cast was all dressed up with no where to go. In sum, very, very disappointing. The very first 45 minutes of the first dvd is unforgivably boring and then after you will be positively glued to the program. Always waiting for resolution of some problem or issue. It rarely comes I tell you and before you know it you will be knogging your brain about the turn out of some new matter. For the money and time investment --maybe take a pass or definitely purchase used. Very used.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR THOSE WHO DEMAND HISTORICAL ACCURACY
The intent of the director was to capture the ATMOSPHERE or "flavor" of the Elizabethan court. Intrigue, alliances, deceit, ambitions, trechery and emotions. In addition he means to show us that Elizabeth was a human being thrust into power, and all that power demands. On those points he got it right ALTHOUGH people were not quite as clean and good looking then. Times were brutal. A toothache could kill you. Lice were everywhere.
2-0 out of 5 stars What a Waste
This movie had many of the ingredients to make it truly great, including a phenomenal cast, lead by Cate Blanchett, and great scenery and cinematography. The actors playing Elizabeth, Cecil, and Walsingham spoke and acted admirably, each phrase spoken with such honesty and feeling, but the words themselves rendered the performances useless. The director and the author of the script greatly misunderstood the characters and the material. They should have read Elizabeth the First's biography by Elizabeth Jenkins. It is useless to say a movie does not need to be historically accurate but has only to entertain: had the author and director been more historically accurate, they would not have created the unbelievable character they created in Elizabeth, who is in turn hysterical, defeatist, overbearing, childish, tyrannical, who never shows her core intelligence, her great love of her people, who had a private core described by her motto "Semper Eadem", be always one. Elizabeth ruled with her advisors, she was not totally ruled by them. She would not have put up with Norfolk screaming at her across the council table, nor would Burleigh have allowed it. Cate Blanchett's wonderful acting and presence were pearls thrown before swine, wasted on a character portrayal that totally lacked any integrity, much less truth. How could the director think that the woman he was trying to portray was any kind of real woman? The ending had me blushing with embarassment for one and all. We are laughably given William Cecil as wimpy and ineffective, and Walsingham as the mastermind behind the throne. One of the reviews said that the director inspired Rush to play Walsingham much like the Hindu god Krishna. I suggest that he should have first read some English history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Job Well Done is Worth Buying
I remember when I was younger and watched the 1987 Hallmark version, and was too young to understand the low quality acting portrayed in the movie. However I was enchanted with the story at that age. However now that I'm older and have seen it again, I do not think I like it that much. So I came to this version very skeptical. However I should've known that Warner Brothers would have pulled it off. They changed the story a bit, making it an earthquake instead of cholera that killed Mary's parents, however it's a minor detail that I think could afford to have been changed. Warner Brothers even kept the British Alchemical symbolism strong in it, which I'm quite pleased with. Over all the acting and setting blew me away and trust me, it's quite well worth buying. As I always say, a job well done is worth buying. You won't be sorry for buying this treasure to add to your cove.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
What's with all the negative comments? This movie is incredible! And yes, I have read the book; I watched this movie the very same day I finished the book, in fact, and relished both treasures. I stayed up till four am watching the film (in spite of the fact I had school the next day) and it was worth it! The heroine, Mary, is truly a diverse character; in the beginning of the story, she is spoiled and snobbish, cared for by her Indian nursemaids and neglected by her socialite parents. When her parents die in a tragic accident, however, Mary is sent from the exotic heat of India to the coldness of England, where she is again almost totally ignored by her uncle and his busy servants. Left on her own to wonder the grounds as she chooses, Mary soon comes across many secrets that have long lay buried and sets about unearthing them. It is during her endeavors of discovery that she slowly awakens two lush gardens: one within the mansion's grounds, and another deep in her heart. This story is largely about healing and awakening; the spring glory of the secret garden and the touching spiritual healing of Mary and her family are equally heart-jerking and brought tears to my eyes. Many have complained about inaccuracy to the book, but with a few minor exceptions, I must say I disagree. Any changes were small and I personally think Burnett would have been proud of this film. The scenery, casting, and music are flawless; the grounds of Mary's uncle's huge estate go from cold to vibrantly breathtaking in wonderful symbolism. The child who plays Mary is a classicaly lovely brunette who brings the perfect mixture of high-class snobbery, stubborness, and ultimate softness to her character; Maggie Smith is also wonderful in her stiff but not unlikeable role as head housekeeper, and no one could have found a better actor for the thin and isolated Colin. And the music: if I hadn't already lost the battle with tears, I would have as soon as Linda Ronstadts's haunting voice began singing when the credits rolled. The music throughout is wonderful and adds to the story's beauty. This movie is refreshing, healing, and beautiful. I highly recommend it, whether you've read the book or not; unless you're a VERY hardcore fan who will not allow yourself to tolerate any inaccuracies whatsoever, you'll heartily enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars great film and no nudity
I agree with the other reviewer. It is sad that anyone would even in the slightest consider a brief view of a little girls chest/nipple to be "nudity". In case no one knows the chest of little girls and boys and exactly the same. if it was a 10 year old boys nipple it probably wouldn't even be mentioned.
