5-0 out of 5 stars 'Where's the money. Lebowski?" - "It's uh... uh... it's down there somewhere, let me take another look. "
I won't add to the voluminous praise that already exists in abundance on Amazon that speaks so eloquently of this film.I agree totally with everything written here stemming from a positive vibe, man. This is one of my favorite movies.Certainly my favorite Coen Brothers movie in their comedic body of work, even bypassing "Raisng Arizona" (which I think is a masterpiece as well).
1-0 out of 5 stars The only good part of this movie is when...
...Tara Reid offers a certain favor for a thousand dollars. Other than that, it's a typical Coen Brothers "Look-we're-being-clever" affair. And yet the laughs are few and the "zaniness" rings hollow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
The main character, Lebowski, is a bum of a person living in Los Angeles who spends most of his time either doing nothing or bowling with characters played by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. Suddenly Lebowski's life is changed when he is mistaken for another Lebowski who is much wealthier than he and who as gotten involved with a group of unsavory characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars MEN OF CONSTANT SORROW
Another bizarre entry in the Coen Brothers arsenal, O BROTHER is a thoroughly entertaining if somewhat unusual film. The story focuses on three prison escapees who are going to Mississippi to collect the 1.2 million dollars supposedly hidden there.Based on Homer's ODYSSEY, the film involves our three heroes/stooges in some unusual adventures, all leading to a lot of twists in its looney conclusion. What makes it work is the spirited performances of George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as the escapees; the charming bluegrass music including the surprise smash hit I AM A MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW and some nice bits from supporting players John Goodman and Holly Hunter. It has some Three Stooges touches, and is filmed quite beautifully. All in all, a weird but enjoyable comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy Cow !
About two years ago I was in a thrift store checking out the good stuff, as I was heading out I walked past a TV set that was playing "O Brother, Where Art Thou".I was stopped in my tracks and stood there for half an hour just mesmerized while watching the video. Talk about totally different and totally enjoyable, I couldn't belive it, it reminded me of a time in the 1940s while living in South Carolina. I returned the next day and bought the video. Now I have the concert "Down From the Mountain"

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
I'm not a big fan of `kicking and punching' films. My partner is... so I've grown immune to them, to some degree. But Hero is one film that stands above all the others I've endured. The action is... well, the action you always get in this kind of film, but there's also so much more. A tender love story, plot twists, and some of the most stunningly beautiful cinematography you'll ever see. The colours, the flowing movements, the locations... it's like opening a box of chocolates and seeing all your favourites. Wonderful
3-0 out of 5 stars Jet Li's interpretation of the "One China" policy
I suppose I can't complain about a Chinese nationalist movie. After all, we have many ourselves, some of which are considered true classics (e.g., High Noon; Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) and some are kitschy classics (e.g., Red Dawn).
4-0 out of 5 stars The released from Edko Films was better.
I owned this dvd but it's a region 3 code and was released by Edko films. I have two edition of this movie, The Theatrical Version which presented in 2 disc and The Directors's Cut Version. I love everything about this movie and also the special features. I think that I have made the right choice by buying both edition because The Theatrical Version released in 2 disc which the second disc contains lots of supplement material such as the making, trailer, interview with the cast and crew, etc.and the The Director's Cut, only one disc which is it's an uncut version. I don't know well about the region 1 code dvdof this film. so my reviewed was based on the region 3. I've searched the comparison both region code dvd and bought the region 3 dvd straight away after I've found that region 3 was better for this film. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual splendour highlights martial arts-lovetriangle plot
"House of Flying Daggers" is one of the best-looking movies you'll ever see.Yimou Zhang, known for such over-the-top spectacles as 2002's Jet Li flick, "Hero," may be the most visually exuberant director this side of Baz Luhrmann.Whether it's an ornate reception hall, or a lush bamboo forest, or a snow-covered landscape, "House" cannot offer anything less than a breathtaking scene. 4-0 out of 5 stars The First Time This Was 5 Stars
The very first time I saw this amazing film I was wrapped around its finger. Everything about it is perfect from its scenery to the perfectly paced and executed fight scenes. After the first time you see it the more and more you watch it the more you notice little things that are big. Basically the things that made the film beautiful start to unravel. One thing I hate that I am seeing a lot of is the digital blood, so when someone is hit with one of the daggers it looks computer generated when the dagger hits someone and then the fake unneeded blood comes out. There are also the daggers that look digital and for some reason they feel the need to do a bunch of flips and turns while the dagger is in midair. Some of the scenery looks fake like in one scene Jin and Mei are walking down a hill and there is a very pretty background of trees and waterfalls but you notice that it's fake and looks like a painting. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent job from Zhang Yimou.
Another excellent job from Zhang Yimou. Also, my review still based on region 3 dvd for this film which was released by Edko Films. It's a 2 Disc Special Widescreen Edition. Everything is perfect for this dvd. The clearity of the picture and Dts Surround Sound was extremmely amazing. The special feature is in Chinese Mandarin and no subtitle. So you have to learn Mandarin or need a translator to understand what are the crew and the cast have said in their interviews. The bonus material includes the making, photo gallery, artwork gallery, cast and crew profile and the hidden menu which was really hard to access containing the music video, the way Andy Lau dubbing in studio and a few tv spot and trailer. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars If you want to see Dune, watch the Miniseries
Ug. I really dislike this movie. Dune is one of my favorite books, and this movie totally ruined it. It is boring, confusing, unfaithful to the book, and just plain badly done. If you want to see the real Dune, watch the amazing miniseries done by sci-fi channel and it's sequel, Children of Dune. Both are much better done and much more faithful to the source material.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not reviewing this film
I just noticed some dude seems to think that David Lynch didn't direct this film. Well, Michael Mann also didn't direct the TV version of Heat. Alan Smithee, or Allan Smithee, and sometimes Adam Smithee did. Those names are terms pseudonyms hollywood directors have used when they don't want to be associated with a project they worked on. For more read go to an online encyclopedia like wikipedia and type it in.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad there isn't a 'no stars' option.
DON'T BE FOOLED!!!!The page states that David Lynch directed this, but he actually took his name off (look at the screen shot). This extended edition was directed by Alan Smithee.Don't worry though . . . it gets worse.

Editorial Review

Leave it to the wildly inventive Coen brothers (Joel directs, Ethan produces, they both write) to concoct a fiendishly clever kidnap caper that's simultaneously a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller, and a violent tale of criminal misfortune. It all begins when a hapless car salesman (played to perfection by William H. Macy) ineptly orchestrates the kidnapping of his own wife. The plan goes horribly awry in the hands of bumbling bad guys Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare (one of them being described by a local girl as "kinda funny lookin'" and "not circumcised"), and the pregnant sheriff of Brainerd, Minnesota (played exquisitely by Frances McDormand in an Oscar-winning role) is suddenly faced with a case of multiple murders. Her investigation is laced with offbeat observations about life in the rural hinterland of Minnesota and North Dakota, and Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Suspense Thriller!
"Fargo" is a very good film. The Cohen Brothers put another feather in their cap with this suspenseful film. The film stars Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) as a car salesman in dire need of money. When he hires a couple of losers to kidnap his wife for ransom, things go from bad to worse. I couldn't help feeling sorry for the wife as she tries to escape from the clutches of her kidnappers. The father of the kidnapped wife does not want to play along with the ransom, and decides to act on his own. Jerry now finds himself in an even deeper mess. Moreover, he has a saavy police chief (McDormand) on the case.
5-0 out of 5 stars A is for acting.
I can't believe how many reviewers neglected the fact that part of the genius of this movie is the way it is passed off as a true story.Even the rumor that the cop was really a man just fuels the belief, although it is pure fiction. The acting is great all around, but Macy steals the show as the complex, pathetic Lundegaard, a spineless, wimpy guy who married the overbearing, egotistical boss's ditzy, innocent daughter. We never really find out why Jerry needs the money, although schemes involving a parking lot investment, insurance fraud, and a phony kidnapping are all backfiring as the plot unfolds.Perhaps he simply needs the money from the kidnapping and/or the investment to cover the auto insurance fraud screw-up when they call his loan back.It is never really explained, and to good effect. The impetus for the capers is irrelevant.
3-0 out of 5 stars A good mvoie but ruined by endless 'yeah! yeah! yeah!'
how come all the people in this movie endlessly saying 'yeah__?, yeah__?, yeah___?' men, women, cops, husbands, wives...'yeah, yeah, yeah....' all the time? are all these people from germany or scandinavian countries? yeah? yeah? yeah??? it drove me crazy to watch this yeah-yeah-yeah movie. stone killers/kidnappers like a couple of clowns. stupid husband tried to swindle money from his father-in-law....yeah? all too common but pretty down to earth true. a very loose script sometimes made the progress of this movie drag along in a very slow pace. no tension could be built up by such slow motion. it's not an unusual thriller but more like a documentary. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Reviews are as interesting as the movie
I won't recap the film but a few things struck me about it.The portrayal of Treadwell was a bit one-sided, colored in my opinion by Herzog's ultimate disdain for his subject.Even Treadwell's annoying self-absorbedness I was willing to forgive because we are ALL two people: our public selves and our private selves - this is something the director forgot to consider.I would have liked to see the side of Timothy that won over people, got himself put on television, got girlfriends and lovers, got permission from Government agencies.I would have even liked a notation about the fact that for some reason, that perhaps is beyond us, the man DID successfully bond with animals that COULD have killed him, but did not for well over a decade.Indeed the killer was a rogue bear, not one of his bunch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hair-raising footage...and not just of bears
When an altruistic but deeply troubled loner remakes himself as an environmental activist, filmmaker, and protector of the grizzlies in Alaska's Katmai National Park, he embarks on a course that leads inexorably to a violent collision with nature. The filmed record of his countless confrontations with the creatures over 13 summers clearly shows not only their terrifying power - as when two adult males square off in a fight whose savage ferocity is almost beyond belief - but also their utter indifference to him.Nonetheless, Timothy Treadwell believes that he has developed a congenial and ultimately trustworthy relationship with them. His misguided disdain for the boundary between bears and humans leads not only to his own death but to tragedy for others as well, provoking an emotional debate on the proper relationship between civilization and the wild. What makes Grizzly Man a stunning, one-of-a-kind film is the fact that it was assembled largely from Treadwell's own footage by the thoughtful German director Werner Herzog, who both appreciates the idealism of Treadwell's solitary quest and deplores his failure to understand the chaotic, deadly situation in which he put himself and his loved ones. Herzog's clear-eyed direction and circumspect commentary frame Treadwell's increasingly messianic bipolarity as respectfully as possible, freeing the viewer to weigh both sides and marvel at some of the most hair-raising footage ever taken in the wild - of both grizzly and the human animal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eccentric Captivation.
My father was the person who first told me about this documentary.Upon hearing about it, I wasn't sure what to expect.I didn't recognize who "Timothy Treadwell" was and I don't think I had ever herd of Werner Herzog before (when I first saw the movie I almost fainted because I thought the former manager of the St. Louis Cardinals had made this film). After seeing the movie, I remembered that I had seen Treadwell before when he had appeared on television and I was corrected about the mistaken identity of the director. After viewing the movie, I was flabbergasted. It honestly is one of the most well-done documentaries about a person that I have ever seen.

Editorial Review

John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain "good" in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and Iggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and losers on the outskirts of town, and Waters writes some hilarious sardonic dialogue for the characters. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Campy...cute
Sort of like Grease/Outsiders gone crazy.Good movie and performances.I had no idea Johnny Depp could sing.I enjoyed the "jail house rock" spoof, and the music is great. Not a GREAT movie though, couldn't touch Grease or American Graffiti. But it IS worth watching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waters Gets Wet With Cry Baby
John Waters who likes to be called the "Pope of Trash" has done a lot of films that are outrageous in style such as "Cecil B. Demented," "Pecker," & "Hairspray." "Cry Baby" is a 1990 musical that is utterly silly and frothy, but works nevertheless. Johnny Depp, now a big box office draw and critical success with Oscar nominations for "Finding Neverland" & "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," can be proud of the rockabilly Elvis-type singer he plays named Wade "Cry Baby" Walker. Depp performs his "Jailhouse Rock" type number with great energy and rebellion. Having him run through sewage pipes in his underwear is enough to set many a teenage girl's hearts aflutter. The female lead is Allison played by Amy Locane who worked in other films like "Airhead," "The Mummy" & "Bongwater." She does a good Olivia Newton John-like "Grease" character of the square girl who has a crush on Depp's bad boy. Stephen E. Miller who was recently seen in "RV" with Robin Williams and previously in "The Accused" with Jody Foster does a good job as the square boyfriend Baldwin who loses his girl to Cry Baby.
3-0 out of 5 stars New scenes not needed

Hi, I'm not one to rain on any one's parade, but if you watch the movie again, you will notice that Nathan Sr. does not and would not ever hire Leonard Smalls to retrieve little Nathan Jr.
5-0 out of 5 stars 'RAISING ARIZONA' a comedy beyond 'any'
Raising Arizona is one of my favourite comedies of all time. Nic Cage & Holly Hunter work well together. They are two of my favourites as well. The film never gets boring. It is full of low IQs, surprising twists and non-stop humour. The film is supported by John Goodman and Trey Wilson who do a great job as two escaped convictes who crashes at Nic & Holly crib.

This is the movie that made John Waters famous, and quite possibly the film that made bad taste cool. 5-0 out of 5 stars Addictively filthy... !!!
Billed as the filthiest film ever made, the truth is that PINK FLAMINGOS might be wickedly campy and seedy - - but its reputation is somewhat deceptive... mainly because John Waters is a great story teller... the film is well paced... genuinely funnyand genuinely rewatchable over and over again. The lines are quotable... and the characters areunforgettable... as for offensive... Yes, but as long as you're willing to "let go" and let yourself be pulled into John Waters' unique world (JUST til the film ends of course, if you're still in it after it ends, institutionalization IS necessary!) it is definitely a one of a kind watching experience... - - as long as you don't mind the risk of someone accusing you of having the mind of a 14 year old. - - The soundtrack of the film and use of the music is also great...- - It alternates between John Waters' great screenwriting (if you don't believe he's a great writer, check out his book of memoirs and essays CRACKPOT!) and "silent" scenes with the rock and roll music and the charactors engaging in sick antics.I think Raymond Marbles definitely wins out over divine... he's so suave as he roams town exposing himself in the most unique of ways... As for the big irony... Though the film is best remembered for the famous dog doodie eating scene (at the very end), believe it or not, it could have been cut and the film would be equally great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you've heard is true!!
Revolting, disgusting, stomach turning, and freakin' funny! Divine is at her divinely best as Babs Johnson aka The Filthiest Person alive. I'm not going to give away anything, the shock value is just too good. It's fun watching this movie with people who have never seen it. I've seen reactions from people leaving the room to actual gagging! It's wonderful! But honestly, the movie is laung-out-loud funny. The dialoge, which can be a bit wordy, but never boring, is some of the best I've ever heard. Watch out for some great characters like Edie the egg lady, pure genius! Babs' birthday party scene has to be seen to be believed. You wouldn't believe me if I described it here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, It's the Most Disgusting Movie Ever
Anyone reading this review has already heard what's been said about it. It's been called the stupidest, most vile, disgusting film ever made. It's written/directed/produced/filmed by cult director John Waters and it's his first film. Calling this film the most disgusting, vile film ever made is almost an understatement. I don't really regret watching this film, but there are images in this film I will never get out of my head. I haven't bothered to read a lot into just how real a lot of this stuff is, but considering this movie was made in the 70s I'm not sure how they could have simulated most of this stuff...Which truly worries me. Divine, who I'm pretty damn sure is a guy, plays...Divine, who is living under the alias of Babs Johnson and is called "The Filthiest Person Alive," a title she is quite proud of. She lives with her family, consisting of her son Crackers, a live-in friend named Cotton, and her mother The Egg Lady who lives in a crib. I agree with the reviewer who said The Egg Lady needed to die, because she was annoying. She is annoying. Very annoying. Anyway, on the other side of town are Connie and Raymond Marble who are convinced that they are the filthiest people alive...And they just might be. Because they keep woman in their basement and have their servant impregnate the women and when the baby is born they sell it to lesbian couples. The woman usually die in childbirth. After the Marbles wage an all-out war on Babs and her family, it's on to see who is the filthiest person alive. Now, this movie is most definitely not for everyone. This is the most sickening, vile film I have ever seen...But it's also fascinating. I mean, some of this stuff is just so digusting I wonder how anyone could even envision any of this. John Waters actually seems like a fairly normal guy. If I knew nothing about this movie before watching it and you put John Waters and someone like Tim Burton (who, for the record, has never done anything like this movie but is a fairly discheveled looking guy) in a lineup and made me choose who I thought had written and directed it. I would choose Burton. People consider "Plan 9 From Outer Space" to be the worst film ever made, although that has crossed over into cult classic. What I don't understand is how no one ever gave this film that "honor." This movie has terrible acting, that's completely noticeable and yet doesn't annoy you half as much as Keanu Reeves did in "Dangerous Liaisons." This is truly a bad film. But for it's originality and supreme distaste, I was hooked. You also have to realize that Waters made this film so he could make a name for himself, in that aspect...This is a really great marketing idea. If you make a film that becomes widely known as the most disgusting ever made...People are gonna see it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Open's Your Eyes
This movie is a real eye opener. Set to a high octane techno soundtrack, Lola (Franka Potente) must help her boyfriend Manni get 100,000 or his life will be in grave danger. There are three scenarios of what can/could happen, and it's an eye opener because it shows how easily your life can change in a matter of minutes. I definitely recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars No, there's no cause and effect here
For me, this movie got off on the wrong foot when it posed a question and left us hanging for the answer. It basically asked us what the one question in life is, and what that answer is, then suggested that both the question and answer were obvious, and left it there without providing its answers.I could have done without that bit of annoying stupidity.
5-0 out of 5 stars High octane adrenaline rush for the eyes...
`Run Lola Run' is like `Groundhog Day' on speed, with maybe a hit of `Kill Bill, Vol. 1' in there for good measure. It follows Lola (Potente) as she races to get 100,000 deutschemarks for her boyfriend Manni (Bleibtreu) who is in debt to a seedy gangster with no patience or mercy. She has twenty minutes to do so and what makes this film unique is that it is very time conscious.Tom Tykwer accurately takes twenty minutes (or VERY close to) with each of Lola's attempts to save her boyfriend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hotel at the end of the universe
A marvelous evocation on a hotel room.Picking up where "In the Mood for Love" left off, Chow tries to track down his lost love, Su Li Zhen.He finds himself in the same hotel, if not the same room, with a new set of relationships which are much more fluid in nature. While he cannot commit himself to any one woman, he does seem to find some solace in the landlord's daughter, who helps him write a sci-fiction serial entitled 2046, where all time seems to have come to a standstill and he sublimates his love in androids. Not even the lovely Bai Ling (Ziyi Zhang) can stir Chow from his fantasies. It is only when he finds a similar namesake (Li Gong) that passions are aroused, but this Su Li Zhen is a professional gambler, who proves even more elusive than the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars a great addition to "in the mood for love"
like "in the mood for love", this movie was very beautifully done.the cinematography, the acting, the scenery, the script, etc... were well done.bravo kar wai wong for this masterpiece.

3-0 out of 5 stars This film was sort of Anticlimactic to me
I have a fond interest in Hong Kong cinema, but Wong Kar-wai in particular. And since this was a follow-up to his marvellous film "In the Mood for Love", which ties into the world founded in his elliptical, perplexing 1990 masterpiece "Days of Being Wild", the anticipation was high...

Editorial Review

David Lynch peeks behind the picket fences of small-town America to reveal a corrupt shadow world of malevolence, sadism, and madness. From the opening shots Lynch turns the Technicolor picture postcard images of middle class homes and tree-lined lanes into a dreamy vision on the edge of nightmare. After his father collapses in a preternaturally eerie sequence, college boy Kyle MacLachlan returns home and stumbles across a severed human ear in a vacant lot. With the help of sweetly innocent high school girl (Laura Dern), he turns junior detective and uncovers a frightening yet darkly compelling world of voyeurism and sex. Drawn deeper into the brutal world of drug dealer and blackmailer Frank, played with raving mania by an obscenity-shouting Dennis Hopper in a career-reviving performance, he loses his innocence and his moral bearings when confronted with pure, unexplainable evil. Isabella Rossellini is terrifyingly desperate as Hopper's sexual slave who becomes MacLachlan's illicit lover, and Dean Stockwell purrs through his role as Hopper's oh-so-suave buddy. Lynch strips his surreally mundane sets to a ghostly austerity, which composer Angelo Badalamenti encourages with the smooth, spooky strains of a lush score. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysteries
Lynch fills out the world of Blue Velvet so lovingly, and with such care and imagination, and attention to detail (and to the odd, essential quirks of life), that, surreal as it is, this world seems wholly authentic to us. Because Lynch is not afraid to "dream' his movies, he fills his world with the kind of "abritrary' touches that make up real life. And his mise en scene here, far from being merely the backdrop to his "plot," is actually central to it (and even takes precedence over it). The one grows organically out of the other, in fact, for, as in all true myths (and in dreams also), the two are inseparable. Because in life, there is no plot, obviously (save that written by God, or Chance), only an endless, infinite and unimaginably intricate unfolding of scenes, acts, events, encounters, gestures, words, sounds, smells. In a word--phenomena, endlessly spilling out and colliding and spinning off and resounding with all the crazy random beauty of pollen in the wind. There may be patterns in such chaos, but if so, they are infinite, varied, and eternally overlapping, interacting. And so the patterns we choose to isolate are simply that: their meanings is merely the meaning we have chosen to impose upon the chaos. For Lynch, the mystery of the world is inseparable from the mystery of us--the mystery of perceiving, which is the greatest mystery of them all. Something is out there, Lynch seems to be saying, because something is making us perceive. It's up to us, then, to seek it out, and even if we know we can never hope to understand it, we can at least try. What else are we here for? The alternative is simply too dull, too dispiriting, to entertain--that's there's nothing out there, nothing hidden or inexplicable, and that what we think is all there is. (The insanity of solipcism is the only thing that's unthinkable in Lynch's world.)To Lynch, the options are plain--either we know it all, and the answers are just what we choose to invent, in which case there's no sense in asking questions at all. Or--we know nothing, and no answers are possible, so all there is for us to do is ask the most exciting, enchanting, impossibly impertinent questions we can dream up. To Lynch, the world is a strange world, not because we do not understand it, but because that's the way it is--it's nothing but strangeness, that's what makes it the world (such stuff as dreams are made of). Since, for Lynch, there is nothing stranger than "normality," so, by the same token, the strange is the only "normal" thing there is. And seeing as we have made the world thus, by perceiving it, interpreting and assembling it, piece by piece, with our own thoughts and senses, then we must be mysteries, too.
2-0 out of 5 stars An astonishingly conventional film that isn't nearly as subversive as it thinks it is
Let it first be said that everyone who considers themselves a serious student of film should see "Blue Velvet" on principle alone-- this review is intended for people who have seen it, and thus contains SPOILERS.
5-0 out of 5 stars about the movie blue velvet...........
This DVD film/movie is sold around Singapore videoshops and I have grabbed a copy and watched....hee hee...The story basically talk about the case of the chop off ears which the murder case was investigated and the case detail came to the light to the higher police investigating department which was done by a the actor himself. The case was presented by the police and this mad person whom was acted by Dennis Hooper (famous for his insane killer character in also other films) in the end died under gunfire when he tried to catch the actor for trying to go into a house and look for 'evidence'. Recommended to those whom are interested in this genre of DVD film/movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars The whole less than the sum
There are undeniably interesting set-pieces in this film as there are also undeniably awful ones. Lynch, presumably presented this one as an oblique head-scratcher and it is. I'm not convinced, as some viewers seem to be, that it means anything. Each inpretation seems to present holes of their own. All in all, cinephiles should find more than a scene or two to enjoy as long as one loses all expectations that there is any guarantee of relation to the rest of the film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for brain...(do you have large appetite? )

5-0 out of 5 stars why do people feel the need to write big, unnecessary reviews on classic art films?
It's as if they're all hopeing that rolling stone talent scouts are going to recruit them after reading their in-depth reviews on amazon.com :p -anyway, this movie is great, it's kind of depressing but in a pensive way. The more I watch it the better it is, & I actually didnt think to much of it at first! Now it's definetly made it to my top 10! The koch dvd is good too...watch those fellini commercials & short bits...they'll blow your mind!
4-0 out of 5 stars The desperation of a man who had to choose

4-0 out of 5 stars when fellini became fellini & marcello became marcello
from this point on, fellini stopped being a director and became an adjective. long and episodic, this movie takes on the paparazzo and celebrity symbiotic love/hate. now to some today that might seem pretty standard, but this WAS half a century back. i can imagine what audiences felt back then! and of course, this IS the movie that made marcello mastroianni into a household name, and for that alone it deserves its praise. fellini would go on to top it, but nothing he did after could have come about if not for this seminal motion picture.

Editorial Review

John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later features Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Change of Pace for John Waters
I first heard of Hairspray a few years ago when Harvey Fierstein was winning acclaim playing the transvestite role on Broadway. I heard of it once again, when I read that John Travolta would be playing that same role in a theatrical version of the film. Around this same time I saw a movie called "Pink Flamingos" which led me to discovering John Waters, which led me to finding this film. "Hairspray" is not Waters' best (in my opinion), but it's definitely a special and funny film that is a far cry from other efforts by Waters. First off, it's his first and only film to have a rating under 'R' (In fact, it's rated PG) and while it still contains a few vulgarities; It's actually a pretty tame movie. The film takes place in the 60's, where hair (and hairspray) was the rage. Equally popular is The Corny Collins Show, a TV dance party that all the kids just eat up. One in particular though, dreams of being on the show and becoming famous. This is Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake, 'Serial Mom')...
1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy movie
I saw the stage production and thought that since it was good the movie would be good also. I was very wrong. The movie is awful

3-0 out of 5 stars What Great Fun
What great fun I had watching this movie. I really enjoyed the music, and the characters in the movie were just like the kids were back then.I was taken back to the days of American Bandstand and other dance shows of that era. Really fun to watch and fun to remember........ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three views of the heroic in a stratified society
Since there are over 300 reviews of this magnificent film already posted, I would like to discuss some aspects of this film that are rarely discussed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the greatest film ever made
Seven Samurai is the greatest film made by perhaps the world's greatest film director. The string of films from Rashomon to Red Beardrepresents an almost unbroken run ofclassic films (all but one starring Toshiro Mifune), not the least for the fact that Akira Kurosawa was able to infuse humanism and populism amongst the chaos and indifference in a wide variety of settings. Individuals could make a difference in an indifferent society (Ikiru, Red Beard) or work together for a common cause (Seven, Sanjuro), while in other films the inhumanity of class culture (The Lower Depths, Stray Dog, High and Low) was laid bare.Yet at other times, it could be seen that Kurosawasoured on the idea thatsociety could change for the better in films like The Bad Sleep Well and Record of a Living Being, giving way to the chaos of Fortress of Blood and Yojimbo. But whether pessimistic or optimistic, Kurosawa's films seldom fail to both entertain and inform.

This is where is the Lynchian nightmare began. 4-0 out of 5 stars Are You Henry?
What is a cult film? Is a cult film a film that lacks many of the components of a mainstream film, but somehow or other is able to garner many fans through its artistic merits, bizarreness, racy humor, etc.? If so some films like Kevin's Smith's Clerks and Jim Jarmusch's Stranger than Paradise might rank highly in some circles because of their use of black and white film and their ability to find humor in the mundane life. However, what about the films of Kitano Takeshi and Miike Takashi? Their films are vastly different, but they are both labeled cult film directors in the West. Maybe it is because they are Japanese. As one can tell when one goes to the local video story, if one wants to rent a foreign film it is automatically in the "art film" section even if they were quite mainstream in their home countries. What am I trying to get at here? I am just trying to say that the label "cult film" is just too easy to use. I mean, come one, do you really believe Kill Bill is a cult film when it garners millions of dollars at the box office. Who knows? It is up to the film viewer to decide. The reason I am bringing this up and why I went into the blurb above is because I've just watched one of the films that I have known as a cult classic for around ten years, but I have just gotten around to watching myself and that film is David Lynch's Eraserhead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
The movie is great but why does it still have the year 2000 on the cover art?Couldn't it have been removed when this DVD was given a wide release? It is 2006 and it says 2000 on the cover...dumb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic, Introspective, Evocative
Eraserhead is filled with strange, uncanny scenes. What is it to be uncanny? Dictionary.com defines it as having or seeming to have a supernatural or inexplicable basis; beyond the ordinary or normal; mysterious; arousing superstitious fear or dread; uncomfortably strange.I would want to define it for this film as the quality of being familiar and strange at the same time. One has the sense of having never seen such weirdness and having vaguely remembered seeing it somewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Huge Inside Joke
Because the Coen brothers style was relatively unknown when "Miller's Crossing" was released back in 1990, most critics and viewers took it to be just another run of the mill gangster thriller; notable only for the complexity of its story elements. The Dashiell Hammett type story is told from the point of view of Tom (Gabriel Byrne), an adviser to a prohibition era Irish crime boss named Leo (Albert Finney).
4-0 out of 5 stars the last reviewer is right.Everything that this person hates about the movie I loved
The gangsters in this movie are not supposed to soundor be acting authentic. The characters are supposed to be fun and the voices were just awesome. This is my favorite role from Gabriel Byrne. The way he has no cares about anybody but himself was very interesting to watch. There are a few plots here going on that all come together for a rather unspectacular ending, but this was still a great movie.
1-0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Bad!!!!
Take Hammett's "The Glass Key" (and be sure not to credit it), muck it up with pointless violence, mix with stilted, often inane dialogue which would not be out of place in a comic book, stir in over-the-top ham acting by just about everyone, add cartoonish, cliched scene setup and direction and you've got "Miller's Crossing", the most unintentionally hilarious gangster movie I ever saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE: CRITERION EDITION
Thank you Criterion! This wonderful DVD presented by Criterion is the one to purchase. Having owned the masterworks DVD, I can state without any hesitation that this is the one to have. I don't think I need to go into the film, with so many wonderful reviews already here at amazon. However, if there are any of you who were deciding which to buy--then it is the CRITERION DVD. The story of Shakespeares King Lear is all too familiar with many already. Those who have not seen this film, go out and rent it today. This is a wonderful film that I would love to watch with my wife in a movie theatre some day. Highly, highly recommended. Enjoy this wonderful masterpiece of cinematic beauty!

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
I've watched many Japanese movies and have never 'felt' them until I watched "Ran". Powerful, 'Dark', you can almost guess what's going to happen but it still comes at you and makes it all the harder to bear. The Criterion Collection has done a wonderful, if not masterful remake of this classic. Wow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent transfer by Criterion
I am not going to write about the merits of Ran, i.e., it is a given that it is perhaps Kurosawa's finest work. If you bought the previous Masterworks edition and are sitting on the fence whether to purchase the Criterion, don't hesitate. The "Masterworks" transfer is a travesty compared to the Criterion. The colors just bleed in the Masterworks, whereas here the colors are perfect and vibrant. On the Masterworks DVD there is a restoration demo, which I thought was a joke since they did a lousy job compared to the Criterion. Get this DVD if you are a Kurosawa fan; you won't regret it. This is perhaps the finest Criterion DVD that I have purcased, and I own over 40 Criterions. ... Read more
