4-0 out of 5 stars Going only where your imagination can take you.
For the most part you already know the story from reading the rest of the reviews and summaries.
1-0 out of 5 stars For fans of Miyazaki, NOT for fans of the book
I was very excited about this film as a fan of both the book and Ghibli Studios previous works. All the greater the disappointment then, when less than half way through the story becomes something utterly unrecognizable from the original and several characters lose all their complex charm. What a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME FOR A REMAKE!
I truly beleve the disney verion is better than the fox verion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanment for any age.
How wonderful it is to be able to experience what is surely a cherished family classic for a generation of people from another country. This version of "My Neighbor Totoro" features excellent video quality as well as a very well done English audio track for those who wish to avoid reading subtitles.
1-0 out of 5 stars New Voice and Sound Tracks!
I was very displeased with the newest version of Totoro. With Dakota and Elle Fannings voices, as well as all the other new voices, made the movie sound horrible and very unlike the original version of Totoro! The newest version could never be compared to the original version! The original version of Totoro should have never been fixed and it will ALWAYS be better than the newest version! I couldn't even get through the first disc, without hearing the new annoying voice sound tracts! VERY DISSAPOINTING! What a waste of money... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
A beautifully realized excursion into a magical world. My attention never wavered as I was struck by one completely unfamiliar concept or scene after another. Often fantasy works leave me a bit cold with the Shakespearean posturing and ambiguous dangers that any variety of spells can be used to bail out of but, this matter-of-fact tale of wonder needs no pretensions and achieves majesty quite easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysterious, full of spirits
This is my third experience with Ghibli studios and I am not disappointed. I am actually starting to develope a taste for their animation. The drawing and coloring was again as great as I expected. The movie starts in a very mysterious setting leaving you a little scared what would come next. As movie passes on you start to see new kinds of spirits. Not many of them are bad, they are just seeking a resting place away from materialistic world. The movie is in general not meant to be about scary ghosts or vengeful spirits. It is actually about coexistence of men and spirits and how they try to reach a balance. In cases spirits help men or vice versa. Myazaki explains in the special features how this animation is based on his real life experience and it seems that he actually modeled the little girl after a friends daughter whom he knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars another amazing anime
This seems to be Miyazake's most personal work, clearly a serious design. It is set in an imaginary time which blends the time of the ancient gods (Shinto style, gods of place and nature) with the settlement of humans and the coming of metalworking and war. The world is not in balance, and a distant conflict between industry and nature has wounded one of the gods of the forest, which is then killed by a sentry boy as it rampages into farmland he guards. The evil controlling it transfers to him, beginning a slow takeover, and he must journey to the origin of the conflict to find a way to cure himself and incidentally, as he will learn, to try to restore balance. But this is not a simplistic tale, he finds there are other characters in play, and there is good and evil in everyone, and no easy balance. The Princess (Hime) of the story is a mysterious human who has been raised by wolves (which are themselves powerful forest gods, a little reminiscent of the Amerindian Coyote myth), who becomes both his ally and his enemy. The story is not easy to understand. It has many Japanese mythic elements but even then, it is a work of Miyazake's unique imagination, and is not intended to be simple or to have a clean resolution.
5-0 out of 5 stars Princess Mononoke
I have seen Princess Mononoke on T.V., and it rocks! It's just awesome like all the other movies that japanese guy makes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic reborn.
I first saw Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind when it was shown on cable TV in the late 80s.I remember being amazed at the artwork, the design of the aircraft, the way the insects and the jungle were brought to life.I had seen Star Blazers and was watching Robotech but this movie was on a whole different level. Now the masterpiece is back.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fair start for Miyazaki...
This film was hard to rate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anime of the Wind
I don't know anime, but I know what I like. I've always said it, and probably will always say it. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", a 1984 film by Hayao Miyazaki, is a film I like a lot. It's unique, it's got atmosphere, and it's got a great message, I thought.

I really enjoy most of Miyazaki's work; especially "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro".I had very high expectations of this, given it's popularity. For whatever reason, it didn't do it for me.

This one was my FAVORITE!It's a cute, "lighter" story. The animation is INCREDIBLE!I love the little girl in this and her cat is SO CUTE!There are so many adorable details to look at.I think this is a wonderful story, especially for girls. The voices are so cute sounding. And again, the details are just AMAZING to look at.Great movie to start with!:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars The old good vs. evil in a new exciting setting
This review is based on the Disney version of the movie, voiced by James Van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill and others. The basic premise is extremely simple - it's the old good vs. evil, science vs. nature scenario, but the animation and imagination is so cool that it looks much more complicated than that. 4-0 out of 5 stars THE SHEETA IS FALLING! THE SHEETA IS FALLING!
Pazu, a young boy, is looking for something to take his mind off the drudgery of working in a mine all day. He has to work because he's an orphan and he has to take care of himself. Then one day, inexplicably, he sees a pretty girl his own age floating slowly down from the sky with a glowing pendant around her neck. The girl's name is Sheeta and she had fallen out of a airship trying to get away not only from sky pirates, but also the government agents that had kidnapped her from her home. Both parties want the power behind the strange pendant and are willing to put Sheeta's life at risk to get it. Sheeta's only friend and ally is you spirited Pazu, whose dream of finding the mythical sky island of Laputa has an odd link to Sheeta's lineage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Facinating Artwork, my Favorite Studio Ghibli Presentation
Rather than rehash the plot yet again, I will give my overall impressions of the movie.I found the story to be very compelling and the artwork, particularly that of the village and the mines (what I like to refer to "Wales in Hell"), is spectacular.Excellent voice talent, including Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame, adds to the overall enjoyment.Like the man once said, "Sometimes you have to lose to win" and this is my favorite Studio Ghibli presentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming movie
Miyazaki wrote the screenplay so it has to be good, one way or another. This one has Miyazaki's signature elements, flying machines and an early-teen heroine, but is much more sedate than many of his more fantasy-based movies. In fact, the emphasis on relationships almost makes it a chick flick, but for the junior high set.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not one of their stronger releases
It's always strange reviewing certain movies because you keep feeling like you're going to get lynched if you badmouth it. While most just simply say "don't buy this, buy teh creed!!!111", others go into heavy detail about why it wasn't one of their favorites. Whisper of the Heart of course has a charm about it and there's obviously nothing offensive about it such as bad acting, dialogue and such but there wasn't that kind of wonder and magic I got from Totoro, Spirited Away or even Nausicaa.
5-0 out of 5 stars Master piece!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cat Empire?
Haru didn't expect to rescue at cat on the way home from school, and she definitely didn't expect it to thank her. She didn't expect to be showered with catty gifts as a token of thanks, and she definitely didn't expect to be whisked away to the Kingdom of cats to marry their prince. Still, when you're as accident prone as Haru is, you often stumble into unexpected places. It's a good thing that Baron, a living replica of a cat, has a plan to save her.
5-0 out of 5 stars Japan - realm of the greatest animation on earth
I don't know exactly it was in me that instilled a need to see these films, the ghibli films.Maybe it's the fact that Grave of the Fireflies was such a monumental film, it's in my top 20 of all time, that lead me to decide to give some of the others a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fritz is my kind of cat....
This film is hilarious.I've always really dug Bakshi's work.I always felt he is an underrated and underappreciated filmmaker. Many have said this work is dated, but I don't believe so.This is a satire of hippies and political correctness (before the term existed), and on that basis, it's hilarious to see really how full of s--t those people were then (and now). The speech where Fritz goes off on intellectuals trying to outdo all the other f---ing intellectuals is really potent. And seeing Fritz hang out with black people (who are represented by crows here) is hilarious.Fritz was the original wigger!Fritz, like a lot of people from this generation, didn't really care about the problems of the day. They just wanted to party and get laid. It's like the Zappa album "We're Only In It For the Money".This film appeals to my cynical nature. It's a great film. And seeing an X rated animated film was cool too....

1-0 out of 5 stars I walked out of the Theater on this flick....
I was a Sophomore in HS and went to this cartoon with my cousins, What a mistake! I walked out and sat in the car till it was over.It was awful.I think it is sick that even grown ups think this is so amusing to watch cartoon characters have sex.I wouldn't even rate it a "1" star.More like Zero Stars.

The first time I encounter this movie, it was a VHS in the Children section. After wathing it I told the rental place how wrong they were. They couldn't believe that a "cartoon" would be anything except for children.I made them play it and at the scene where the steel worker "relieves" himself they readily agreed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pigs Can Fly!
I don't know anime, but I know what I like. Or do I? The idea of an animated feature about a pig flying an aeroplane sounded a little silly, but I actually found "Porco Rosso" pretty enjoyable.
2-0 out of 5 stars Liked this one the least......
maybe because I didn't like Porco. Everything was sub-par for me. Animation is definitely not as good as his later movies. Not enough weirdness, tried too much for the plot. Everything was just too ho-hum. As if he tried to carry the whole movie on Porco's shoulders. But once you got past the fact that everyone else was human and Porco was a pig there wasn't anything else there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another high-flying adventure from Miyazaki
1992's Porco Rosso tells the tale of Marco, a human WWI pilot cursed to become half-man, half pig. Marco (or Porco) spends his days fighting against sea pirates and evading capture by the Italian Secret Police, as well as visiting the lovely Gina, owner of the swanky Hotel Adriano. Brash American newcomer Curtis (clearly in the mold of actor Ronald Reagan) agrees to fight Marco for honour, and shoots his plane down. A love triangle between Curtis, Marco, and Gina only serves to complicate matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bakshi's best film
This is one of my all time favorite movies.I saw this film back in the 70's right before Star Wars came out and I remember how I loved the characters the most, the hip old wizard, the babe, and the totally cool assassin, a villain turned hero (I never liked elves or fairies, or hobbits either).
5-0 out of 5 stars A Bakshi gem
Ralph Bakshi was one of the most innovative minds who saw the potential of animation for adults. His work is always an eclectic blend of fantasy and reality, the bawdy with the profound. In this world of escalating violence and terrorism, Wizards can have many new meanings with a very old message about Peace.

Isao Takahata's powerful antiwar film has been praised by critics wherever it has been screened around the world. When their mother is killed in the firebombing of Tokyo near the end of World War II, teenage Seita and his little sister Setsuko are left on their own: their father is away, serving in the Imperial Navy. The two children initially stay with an aunt, but she has little affection for them and resents the time and money they require. The two children set up housekeeping in a cave by a stream, but their meager resources are quickly exhausted, and Seita is reduced to stealing to feed his sister. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but this is an emotionally cloying melodrama
This is a good movie, not a great one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Story
This is one of those rare works that doesn't go for simple, heavy handed storytelling. It's a tragedy that unfolds at a realistic pace, with characters trying desperately to be human in the face of a world that has lost its sympathy and sanity.
5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful film, particularly appropriate for generations lucky enough to never have experienced war first hand.
Besides what all, including myself, write about the powerful message and meaning of this film, it should also be made clear that this is a great film--period.Not just a great anime, or a great work of "Asian cinema" or Japanese cinema. This is a film which anyone who loves fine movie-making will be glad to not have missed and is worthy of anyone's very elite collection if they have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Svankmajer is amazing.
Jan Svankmajer is a very clever animator and director. It seems that most of the negative reviews come from small minded people who are not impressed because his style is very "non-hollywood".
5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Stunning Visual Treatfor the Curioser and the Curioser
Most live action takes on the timeless, beautifully surreal classic Alice in Wonderland are replete with the unfortunate burden of having live actors zipped up in hokey animal suits. Said actors then act accordingly to fit their silly, hokey suits, in a result that only the most bored of pre-teens will ever find the movie any bit entertaining.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie
From the moment the stuffed dead rabbit ripped the nails out of his paws and spit them out I was hooked. This is a hilarious movie. Even more so if it was made for kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars still not fixed
As others have said, it's really a shame that you can't rate the film and the DVD seperately.I didn't buy this sooner because of the closed captioning.I had read that the problem is fixed, but I just got mine, and it's not.I don't even want a dub.I prefer subtitles, but these are ridiculous for those of us who can hear - quite obtrusive.
4-0 out of 5 stars Special Edition English Dub needed NOW!
1st off I love this film.It took repeat viewings, but after awhile the exposition in the film began to click! However the issue I have is that after nearly 2 years there is no english dub special edition. Please hurry!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Greed touches everything!
Review? Review?! Quality and really caring about providing a product the customer will actually be happy and proud to own is being replaced with making a fast buck. I dare to say that many Anime fans are also science fiction fans. My best example is what 'they' did to Star Trek. Just milk the fan for their money. Do the least 'they' need to do as the fans are already hooked.

What a waste of money... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A little balance
As a fond admirer of the artwork of Frank Frazetta, and a guy who appreciates even cheesy movies and a sap for Ralph Bakshi's films my hopes for this film were pretty high. Too high? Perhaps, but in comparison to other animated films this one falls pretty short of decent (check out truly great animated films like "Princess Mononoke", "The Secret of Nimh" and "The Iron Giant" to see what I mean). The rotoscoping technique bothered me not one wit. The background stills paintings provided by Thomas Kinkade ("Painter of Light") and James ("Dinotopia") Gurney are gorgeous for the most part. The character designs are good enough. The story is, well, horrid. Thomas and Conway present the worst cliches in this tale that is so simple it's hard to believe even a first year grad student could mess it up. Then there are the animaters who, apparently decided to rachet up the oomph factor for Tigra. It's bad enough that she's realized as a flighty, air-head of a princess with no redeemable value but then her over-endowed body in some shots are just outrageous(trying to draw like Frazetta is a lost cause; animators, note his thick wrists and compact builds, please, it ain't easy imitating a lifetime of established skills). The hero, Lar, is a pretty tough character but he also is victim to awkward dialogue and ridiculous escapes. And why is everyone in the frozen "Ice Keep" dressed for a day at the beach, a hot day at the beach to boot? The only characters worth their credits are Steve Sandor as Darkwolf (Frazetta's Death Dealer, slumming perhaps?) and Leo Gordon as King Jerol (sp?). The rest of the cast have their moments but they are all too brief. There are some great fight scenes. There are times when the action is nothing short of breathtaking. Then the characters start speaking again and it's "ARGH..!!" time all over again.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great old-style adventure story.
I miss movies like this. It's nice to see movies in general, especially animated ones, no less, that don't cater only to children and alienate adults.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Collector must
For English speakers: Excellent fantasy movie. I highly recommend it without hesitation.

4-0 out of 5 stars A movie for people with taste and style
Cool World is a great movie full of some really great creativity and innovation, and really deserves some credit especially for it's time. In terms of story, acting, and writing, it does okay, however the real shining points of this film are in the animation and more than anything the ideas and production.
1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this film no stars
This is simply the worst animated film I have ever seen in my entire life, there is nothing to warrant even one star. This film is nothing but a mess of wooden characters, bad animation, and a poorly conceived plot. This film could have been good in the right hands, namely Ralph Bakshi's hands. The studio executives changed the entire film without Bakshi's knowledge and the final result was this animated abortion. The film started good at the begining, Frank Harris being sucked into the "Cool World" and eventually a detective there and that's were the qaulity ends. The film goes back and forth between the cartoonist Jack Deebs in the real world, who is given no detail, and the poorly animated and un-funny "Cool World". Then all of sudden at the finale, Jack Deebs is given a massive dose of character development at the very last minute and actaully ends up being the hero. Yes,this is film is actually that sloppy.I think I need to alert the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, they have obviously overlooked "Cool World" as a great form of torture.

4-0 out of 5 stars COOL WORLD
Hey!, give a movie a break!!!! i myself love this movie.it shows 2 sides of life, and the 2 sides of society. people for real are like this in life, always wanting power, and creating problems, using drugs,alcohol,sex......trying to change themselves physically.....doing the forbidden,so,i dont see why people think the movie was so bad....hey,it could be your next door neighbor!!!!!or a great fantasy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Mass of Anime Classics
Miyazaki just knows how to entertain us. So much so that a huge name such as Disney would pick up his Japanese films. And this is as good a team as I've seen in quite some time (Disney and Ghibli). Disney has the capability of getting those big named voices (Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, and Michael Keaton to name a few) that make these movies twice as magical as they already are.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you prefer a Studio Ghibli set...
If you want more of these types of works, look for the Studio Ghibli DVD boxed sets that have 12 (blue box) or 14 (white box) movies depending on which set you can find. If you don't mind paying for shipping, a lot are available from Australian sites if you don't like the Hong Kong (Chinese) packaging.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Miyazaki's Work
The first miyazaki anime i saw was Princess Mononoke a few years back and i was struck by the intriguing storyline. It was only when i saw my second miyazaki, - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - that i recognised the animation and style of the director and got hooked. The Miyazaki six pack contains all my favorite Miyazaki masterpieces, including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. This is a definite collectors piece to any fan of the great Hayao Miyazaki.
