this movie was ok. what irritated me was the editing... it was kinda bad. it was confusing the fighting scenes.. but if u like gary daniels... buy this flic

3-0 out of 5 stars Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Relax Your Expectations...
As an action film, Bloodmoon succeeds in almost every aspect of what a martial arts movie is supposed to be. But from the perspective of a HK cinema fan, the film is constantly bogged down by the flaws of bad filmmaking and low-production quality due to a low-budget.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps THE best martial arts film ever
For pure martial arts/action flicks, Bloodmoon simply has to take the cake. Such a great story line, good acting, and stunning martial arts from a not so well known cast. Darren Shahlavi plays the evil ex champion who makes it his mission to kill high ranking martial arts champions one by one, and city by town. Thus enter Chuck Jeffreys, a police detective teamed up with an ex supercop played by Gary Daniels who must track down Shahlavi and bring him to justice. This is a HIGHLY underrated and overlooked movie which in production had a very limited budget, but delivers superb martial arts action, stunts, great storyline, and definately suspense to keep you in your seat within every single fightscene and obviously the final fight which is a superb climax to the film. In my opinion, Bloodmoon is one of the best martial arts films yet... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A subtle an' creepy adult thriller; one'a Sinatra's best...
This is one'a my favorites.A quiet, subtle an' deceptively simple story about an aging New York City detective on the trail of a mysterious an' unattainable serial killer, all while disputing with his superiors who don't seem to think much of the case, and stressing over his wife, the love of his life, who is hospitalized an' on her death bed. It's character-driven more than anything, as you watch Detective Delaney slowly lose his cool as the weight of his troubles bear down on him.He struggles to put on a facade when he speaks to his wife in the hospital, even as she slowly but surely goes in an' out, an' rambles aimlessly; the medicine an' antibiotics doin' her no good an' operation after operation coming to no avail. It's heartbreaking when he speaks to her about the house that they've long been interested in buying bein' in their mits, all while knowing that she is fading fast. With the inevitable loss looming over him, his anger an' frustration turns to determination as, against the warnings of his superiors an' his arrogant new captain, he trails a killer who has been striking at bars, bus stops an' alleyways all over the city.
5-0 out of 5 stars Frank's best
I loved this movie. I read the book first and it was wonderful. A friend of mine gave it to me and after that I read all of the books it this series. 4-0 out of 5 stars Greatly underrated film
Those who choose to review don't seem to "get" this film. Sinatra is able to portray the character of a realistically strong, dedicated, and loving man.He is one of the few actors who could pull it off. Sinatra is both believable and fascinating in his role as an exceptional police investigator with a palpable off-beat manliness who maintains his allegiance to his chosen duty while suffering the great tradgedy of his own personal life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hell yeah! a lot of Laugh
I like this movie a lot, it had boxing, crazy characters, a midget, and one of the very disgusting scene of all the times, a guy head sumerged in a toilet, previously used (with turd and all). Mr.t work here and he is hilarious as always.

1-0 out of 5 stars .........
worst movie in the history of american cinema!you need to be checked out if you actually think this was good.their doing nice things in mental institutions these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOXING MOVIE EVER!
Penitentiary 2 is the best of the Penitentiary flicks. It has the drama of Rocky, the comedy of an old Rudy Ray Moore flick, and the edge of an episode of OZ (HOOOOOOAAAAH).Speaking of OZ, this flick has Ernie Hudson in it.Oh and don't let me forget to mention that this movie has the ultimate action TV hero of the 80's MR. T! My favorite character in this movie is Mr. Seldom Seems. This guy's beard is as thick and round as the afro on his head and he's always telling people not to touch him. He's got a thing about people touching him, he's sort of like Rain Man except he doesn't scream when he's hugged he just starts throwing blows. If you want to watch a classic boxing movie, then P2 is it.......OOOH YEAH, there's a drag queen and a midget in this movie also ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mindless but Entertaining
As I watched this film for the first time, my two reactions were (a) I'll bet they all had fun making it and (b) is this a parody of the so-called "Spaghetti Westerns"? Essentially, there is no plot. El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) seeks revenge from Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) in a town which the drug dealer controls. EM enlists the support and assistance of Carolina (Selma Hayek) who owns and manages the local book store. (I'm not making this up.) No one eats or sleeps in this film. All of the action occurs during the day. There are a few crowd scenes but no one in the crowd seems to have any interest whatsoever in the fact that the street scenes are being filmed. There is one bar of special note. Cheech Marin is its host and bartender. (If you think the bar in Star Wars is unfriendly, this one makes it seem like the Palm Court at The Plaza in New York.) At one point, Quentin Tarantino briefly appears. Apparently he is involved in a drug deal which goes bad. Steve Buscemi also makes a brief appearance. Prudently, he decides not to become involved in the plot. (Where is Harvey Keitel?) EM is a one-man-army. Credit Rodriguez with brilliantly choreographing his creative and relentless carnage which leads up to the inevitable showdown with Bucho. Although most of this film makes no sense whatsoever, I found it thoroughly entertaining. It is on my Top Ten list of films to watch while consuming buttered popcorn, a box of Dots, and a cold beverage...or two. ... Read more

"The Wild Angels" is no "Easy Rider."TWA is chock full of bad acting, bad dialogue, badly-delivered dialogue, and more teased hair than you can shake a can of Aqua Net Extra Super Hold at.Three stars for numerous and unintentionally funny scenes that reek of every biker cliche imaginable.I became interested in the genre after reading Joan Didion's analysis of biker movies in "Notes Toward a Dreampolitik," but I must say I'm pretty much over it now.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Preacher was right.
Like most people I've seen "Easy Rider" (1969), Peter Fonda's infamous drug-culture biker flick, but I haven't seen any of the other biker films from the '60s. Since "The Wild Angels" was available cheap I decided to enlighten myself to this Grade B film genre.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not just sexist, but racist.....
as exhibited by the comments and attacks on a group of Mexicans.Fonda is about as animated as a cigar-store Indian, Nancy Sinatra is woefully miscast, Diane Ladd is over the top and predictable. In fact, the best performance may be delivered by Bruce Dern.....as a corpse. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Violent But Entertaining Film!
This is a film for required tastes only. It will probably not appeal to the vast audience out there. First of all, the film is very violent. And when I say violent, well, I think half the towns Antonio Banderas visited in the film were depleted of the entire male population. However, it's also very funny at the same time. Not comedy funny, but dark-comedy. A guitar playing, gun wielding Mariachi player on the hunt for the man who wronged him is not a film you see everyday. OK, I know the film is bloody and violent, but that is the nature of this film. I found it entertaining and amusing at the same time. Especially the character of Steve Buscemi: the sometime confidant and messenger to Antonio Banderas.

Editorial Review

Walking monolith Dolph Lundgren is a tragedy-haunted explosives-removal expert on the search for a new type of landmine in the midst of a country devastated by warfare. Much mayhem ensues. This (unfortunately) topical premise is remarkably somber for the testosterone market, but what begins as an intriguing drama quickly turns into a by-the-numbers shoot 'em up. (An intricate opening crawl and a smattering of thoughtful dialogue throughout would seem to indicate that this project may have begun with somewhat more lofty ambitions before settling for the straight action route.) Mild thematic letdown aside, this still ranks as an above-average addition to the straight-to-video adventure genre, with a number of genuinely impressive action scenes, a refreshingly proactive damsel-in-distress, and a healthy awareness of the numerous physics-related implausibilities depicted within. (Mention should also be made of the marvelous African-tinged music score by Serge Colbert.) Lundgren may not be the most expressive actor out there, but at least the big lug knows how to get the job done and look good doing it. So does this movie. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Another baddie for Lundgren...
So here I am, writing another review for yet another Dolph Lundgren flop and there is little I can say about this film that I didn't say in my others. "Sweepers" is not only a bad movie, it's a bad direct-to-video. The plot, which is so predictable it hurts, concerns a mine sweeper whose son is killed one day by bad guys. Now there is a super mine out in the open and Lundgren must find it. The action is very badly directed and the story is very annoying, like a loud neighbor. I suppose if you like Lundgren, you'll like this movie. But everyone else will want to stay far away.

1-0 out of 5 stars So bad I cannot summerize
This is not a typical Dolph movie nor is it a typical obscure film. I mean it's obscure, but not in a cool new find way. Perhaps it's due to bad writing and directing but it just seems so different in terms of dialogue and plot development. For most of the movie Dolph sits around and drinks but after about an hour he finally gets down to some action.4-0 out of 5 stars Politically Correct Dolph
I respect this movie because it deals with the problem of landmines in Africa. Whether or not you like Dolph or his acting, this movie is relevant and politically correct. It starts out pretty slow but ends with lots of action and has a couple of surprises in it. Dolph and his costar (Clarie Stansfield) look really good. The problems with the film are that Dolph's voice sounds like he had larangitus during the filming and the landmine they are in search of is supposed to be very sophisticated technology but is really kind of pathetic. On the other hand, in real life, by the time you get as close to a landmine as Dolph's character does in this movie, you are already dead or have at least lost a limb. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wildly maligned!
Sorry, this is an extremely imaginative film with at-times stunning visuals and a fun plot. The director is Eastern European and it shows--he cribs American film style like a master but mixes it only as an ex-Commie could. Hauer is, as always, solidly entertaining, the villain is villainous, and the depiction of the future decadent Russian society probably more dead-on than anyone would care to admit. There's a lot of sexy nudity in this and it's not gratuitous, it's just decadent. Don't let this film sink because a few killjoys don't find what they like in it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Come on Morons!!
I'd usually only rate this movie with 3 stars but as a load of thickos (probably big-budget Hollywood cgi fans) have slated it, I am giving it 5 stars.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!
Rutger Hauer must have been really hard-up or hankering for a little recognition to even bother making this awful movie! Frankly, I have never really thought much of Hauer. He appeared in "Blade Runner"... So what!Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars MC Hammer as a druglord? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!
In a movie where Brian Bosworth (Blackout) goes on a vengence spree after the bad dudes who killed his wife and kid, sounds interesting doesnt it, but trust me, this action/thriller sucks bigtime. Too much of a bad thing and we get some pretty corny acting. Also, this is a movie people where Rapper MC Hammer (He is credited as Hammer) portrays a druglord...so you do a math. Bruce Payne (Dungeons and Dragons, Passenger 57) in full blown long hair tries to deliver us a calm and cool collective badguy but ends up delivering a really corny and annoying part. When doesnt Payne play a dipstick badguy? Jeff Kober (Demolition High, A Man Apart) also stars as one of Payne's lackies. The action is really weak and the acting is even weaker. Dont expect much for this constipated ride....rent something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly fun action movie
Brian Bosworth stars as a serviceman who's mother and daughter are murdered during a crime gone bad. As these things usually go, Bosworth must take up the role of lone wolf and head after the men who done him wrong. Hitting the mean city streets, his quest takes him from low life gangs to the top of the corrupt system.
5-0 out of 5 stars BOSWORTH TACKLES PAYNE
ONE MAN'S JUSTICE, directed by Kurt Wimmer, is a surprisingly effective revenge thriller, buoyed by the performances of Brian Bosworth (in arguably his best role) as an Army sergeant out to avenge the brutal slaying of his wife and daughter, and a deliciously villainous turn by a long-maned Bruce Payne.Add a nasty spin by Jeff Kober (FALCON CREST), and you have the makings of a sharp and tense thriller.Just when you think Payne has been as vicious as he could be, he pulls one more little trick out of his hat, and his over the top cruelty is disturbingly effective.Rapper MC Hammer as crimelord Dexter Caine doesn't do much with the little he's given, but he tries hard.the little boy who plays Mikey (can't remember his name) is very good, if a little too tough to be loveable.

1-0 out of 5 stars liza and burt prove that when your down your down
yet one more atempt by burt to breath some life into his dieing carrer, and the though that liza would help! WRONG!!! this is the bottom of the barrel movie about cops and pros(liza as a pro is just to funny)!!!! this is really just the worst!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Liza and Burt - bring on a sequel!!
This is a sadly overlooked minor classic from the '80s.It bombed at the box office and has a horrible reputation. The DVD is full frame and the transfer is a bit soft and speckled with dirt.Ignore all that, sit back, and enjoy the ride!Liza as a call girl? She pulls it off with great panache, delivering the kind of lines you'd never think would come from her.I've heard she looks back on accepting this role as a mistake - but hey, we are all usually our own worst critic. This is a class act all the way.And Burt?Well, he's the Burt we all know and love - he seems a bit non-committed to the role, but isn't that part of his charm? His late-90s/early-00s comeback was still a decade away, when he would rock the critics with fab supporting turns in "Boogie Nights" and "Driven."Even though many years have passed, I would love to see Burt reprise his role as Church - get him and Liza together again! Now be forewarned, there are some very dated elements to this movie (not the least of which being a cheesy '80s score). But if you are in the mood for a slightly comic, mostly tense and suspenseful, cop movie - you cannot go wrong with Rent-a-Cop.Piece out!

5-0 out of 5 stars As a Liza vehicle - it could be a six...
As a product....only 2 points...There is a pleasurable 80`s soundtrack(I first saw it in the theatre when I was in the military, the spring of 1988), but the highlight is Liza Minnelli in her best comic turn and with her good lines - she delivers PLENTY:-))))))))))))))))) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars One of the OK Crowe movies before he got into doing really good stuff
When FBI Agent Zack Grant, played by Russell Crowe (Cinderella Man, Heaven's Burning), loses his partner Seiko Kobayashi, played by Kelly Hu (Scorpion King, X-Men2:X-Men United), in a blown up operation, a Neo-Nazi son of a mafia man named Victor Serlano, played by Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills 90210, Domino) also dies and his father Frank Serlano, played by Michael Lerner (The Mod Squad, Godzilla (1998) with a not so believeable mustasche, kidnaps Zack's son Eric, played by little Andrew J. Ferchland (Tv's Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and so Crowe goes all gung-ho renegade, so Lerner wants Yakuza member Yuji Kobayashi, played by Etsushi Toyokawa (Love Letter, Dog Star), and he wants Crowe to bring him back to him and Crowe will get his son back. But things get complicated along the way, and Crowe's prisoner is making him tick along the way. Crowe and Toyokawa are joined by airplane stewardess Mary, played by Helen Slater(Supergirl, The Legend Of Billie Jean) who is also a hostage in the whole mix. This Action Thriller goes like this, good moment, boring moment, good moment, ok moment, boring moment, good moment, ok moment, boring, boring moment, good moment and so on. One of the OK Crowe movies before he got into doing really good stuff...here he saves this from being a total disaster....him and actor Etsushi Toyokawa make this worth the watch. Christian Slater's Sister, Helen Slater has some funny oneliners and is sexy holding a gun...that's basically it and Ian Ziering was wasted in a small role. If you're a fan of Crowe like I am, I recommend this but to those who dont like Crowe, well...just watch it once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crowe acting like himself or is he REALLY acting?
I like this movie simply because it was entertaining. There's no deep drama, brainiac prose or intense emotional scenes here. It's just a story about your average cop with a major attitude problem who has a somewhat strained relationship with his 7(?) year old son.The reasons as to why there's a seeminly lack of affection from this single father to his son is explained through poignant flashbacks. The movie is LA Confidential meets Rush Hour.I found Crowe's character humorous, simply because he's so grumpy and prickly, one wonders if it's possible for anyone to be that rude! The ending is uncharacteristically endearing for a movie of this genre. Definitely a must see for Crowe fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars If collecting the lot...
While I am a huge fan of Crowe's... this was NOT one of his better performances.Read more

Patrick Stewart makes his entrance late into this telefilm, stringy hair hanging from under his three-cornered hat, his peg leg tapping out his arrival on deck. This Captain Ahab is a hard, driven man--you can see it in his burning eyes--and there's no question he has the resolve and the mad devotion to complete his quest at all costs: kill the white whale that took his leg. Franc Roddam's mini-series adaptation of Herman Melville's classic novel (filmed previously by John Huston in 1956) manages its budget wisely: a judicious use of digital effects creates a terrifying vision of the great white whale, and Roddam's eye captures a near-epic quality. Henry Thomas's earnest performance as the young seaman Ishmael can't compete with Stewart's intensity, and Gregory Peck's cameo as Father Mapple is a hollow echo of his passionate Ahab from Huston's Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars English teacher gives this DVD a "C"
My American Lit class had reached Civil War era literature toward the end of the semester. While I wanted to give them a taste of Melville's classic novel, there was no way they would be able to read a 600 page book in time for the final; so I decided to show the DVD instead.I originally wanted to show the Gregory Peck version, but our school's Media Center only had Patrick Stewart version.I had asked a fellow colleague about showing this DVD, and she said she had a positive experience with it when she showed it to her students the previous year.
1-0 out of 5 stars IT'S A BIG PEG LEG TO FILL!
It's always interesting to watch actors in their attempts to overcome the stigma of being typecast.I suppose it is a serious problem. After all, apocryphal accounts abound about actors who, having played a too memorable part in a movie, such as the woman who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz, end up unemployed because no one can see them as anything else.

In 1978 Italy, anarchy is in the air as the Red Brigades keep the country in a state of terror. Reporter David (Andrew McCarthy) moves blithely among the mayhem; after all, he's an American citizen and untouchable, right? When the manuscript for his political novel, patterned after the Brigades, falls into the wrong hands, it draws the unwelcome attentions of the Brigades, the police, and aggressive American photojournalist Allison (Sharon Stone) and lands David in hot water. Director John Frankenheimer took an overworked plot and made the best of it, though McCarthy is a bit puny as David. As would be expected in a Frankenheimer effort, though, the action segments shine with lithe editing and Frankenheimer's instincts for composition and camera work. The riots and chase segments make use of Rome's cityscape, calling to mind Euro-thrillers of the period. Stone is compelling as the foolhardy photographer, with some torrid sex scenes with McCarthy. 3-0 out of 5 stars The Movie is Better than the Book
This is one of those occasions where the film beats the book.4-0 out of 5 stars Caution!
This DVD does not have english subtitles for the Italian dialogue. Some minor plot points are not clearly expressed because of this (Unless of course you are fluent in Italian). The old VHS versions have the english translations.3-0 out of 5 stars To tackle domestic terrorism
It is easy to knock this movie for its already mentioned shortcomings (not all of which are that serious). Yes, this is a real life story of the assasination of Aldo Moro fictionalized, courtesy of John Frankenheimer. But this is Italy in the 1970's, so why worry ? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the one that started it all
If you are a fan of the Black Scorpion you need to have this one in your collection of DVDs. This is especally true if you are planning to get the box set of the TV series (which is well worth getting) since this is the origin tale of the Black Scorpion. No fan should be without this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stinging Good Fun
When looking for a fun action film, a good choice would be a filmcalled Black Scorpion that stars Joan Severance. This movie was followed by a sequel and a television series.4-0 out of 5 stars great escapist fare
Black Scorpion always makes me smile. It's a fun movie with a great leading lady and a good sense of fun. I've watched this on more than one rainy Sunday afternoon. A black leather clad superheroine battles the Darth Vader like Breathetaker who wants to make the entire city asthmatic. Silly and sexy cult entertainment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Graveyard of Dopeness...
Yes.This yakuza masterpiece is an eclectic mix of violence, honor, blood and more violence. It's based on the events surrounding real-life bad-ass Rikio Ishikawa. He will not let anything get in his way, regardless if he has a plan.Well, he has a plan, and ultimately revolves around one thing...MAYHEM.You tell this cat not to do something, and that's what he does."Hey Rikio, it's against the code to attack our boss""Really?I guess i gotta shank him in the neck with a kitana blade.""Hey Rikio, stay out of Shinjiku district or we'll kill you.""OK, I'll be there, let's have drinks and a knife fight."He is without much logic and full of wanton abandon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Death of Honor
I have not yet seen this DVD version of the film, but I assume that this Home Vision Entertainment DVD has a much better picture quality - keeping in mind that this film is from the 70s. It is a very entertaining and stylish yakuza film from famous Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku. Fukasaku was made famous because of his great yakuza films including this film and the "Battles without Honor" (aka Yakuza Papers) series. This is highly recommended to anyone who likes gangster films. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Savor the best police drama ever!
Be prepared to love Jane Tennyson, a British police detective who is as competent and talented as the actress playing her, Helen Mirren. The story is well crafted and builds suspense while weaving a complex psychological portrait of a driven passionate women who beyond anything wants to capture the criminal. Tennyson in the tradition of the talented detective does not always follow the rules but with a combination of intuition and dogged persistence brings the criminal to justice. In addition to the complex relationships she has as a woman in a primariy male environment, she also has an inter-racial relationship. If you havent seen the first one yet, go back and watch it as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hen Pecked Fingers
Opening with an image of the atomic bomb reducing Hiroshima to ashes, Fukasaku Kinji's Battles without Honor and Humanity begins a series of five movies depicting the chaotic life of Hirono Shozo a former soldier who is trying to survive in the chaotic world of the black markets in postwar Japan. A pretty even-tempered man, the viewer first witnesses Hirono lash out in violence when a group of American GIs try to rape a woman. Amidst the chaos of the black market with its prostitutes, underground rice kitchens, and violent bars, one of Hirono's friend's head is slashed by a yakuza. A rival yakuza was going to deal with the man, but in his stead Hoshino seeks revenge for his friend. Faced with a drunken, sword wielding yakuza Hirono empties his pistol into the man, and receives a twelve year sentence. However, while in prison, he meets another yakuza named Wakasugi who plans to slice open his stomach in order to get out of jail on bail. Promising to raise Hirono's bail money if he helps him in his plot, Wakasugi introduces Hirono into the world of the yakuza and the two men become blood brothers.
5-0 out of 5 stars No honor amongst thieves and killers
There are few films as well-named as Fukasaku Kinji's "Battles Without Honor and Humanity"("Jingi naki tatakai.')With one shot, Fukasaku (director of "Battle Royale") undid and entire genre of film, one that would never be the same again.A lone Yakuza, wielding a Samurai sword stands against a crowd, a brave sneer on his face.He is instantly shot and killed, his katana useless against a gun.

Editorial Review

Originally released in 1992, this three-episode OAV mixes ecologicalthemeswith some very odd theology. In the not-too-distant future, when the Earth is choking in pollution, the alien Rodo strikes, sequestering virtually all the planet's water andvegetation in guarded enclaves. The remaining humans eke out awretched existence in the vast deserts, under the control of Rodoist soldiers. After witnessing the soldiers' brutality, Ran, a hotheaded adolescent, setsout to join the rebels of the Hazard. During the course of his adventures, hemeets Aira, a mysterious girl whose silvery hair marks her as a member of apowerful group needed by the alien Holy Mother to destroy the human race.Needless to say, Ran manages to rescue her (and humankind) in the nick of time. 3-0 out of 5 stars Another Apocalypse Anime
Truthfully, you'd think this would get old, the post-apocalyptic settings. Almost every major anime has such a setting (Evangelion, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, just to name a few), and in all of these this setting plays an integral role to the story. Green Legend Ran is just another in a continuing line of dramatic anime dealing with this as its central conflict.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's pretty cool
Like most who reviewed this, I saw it on the Sci-Fi channel years ago. And just recently, someone mentioned the name of it on a message board regarding anime on Sci-Fi years ago. So I bought it to see what it was all about.5-0 out of 5 stars this alpha and omega of anime
back in 1994, a friend was staying over at my house. it was about 3:00 am. a show called Saturday Night Anime was on the sci-fi channel. we checked it out. the feature was Green Legend Ran. it was the best anime was i have ever seen, which is saying quite a lot. green legend ran tops even yu-yu hakusho (my favorite series), cowboy bebop, evangelion and those who hunt elves (tee-hee-hee!). if you want a taste of kick-bum anime, you should definitly see it. ... Editorial Review

Take off your thinking caps and toss 'em in a corner, 'cuz you won'tneed 'em when you're watching this deliriously dumb thriller from 1997. Bruce Willis stars as a demoted FBI agent who comes to the aid of an autistic boy whose mind holds a potentially deadly secret. It seems that by gazing on a puzzle magazine and making order out of a hidden system of numbers, the 9-year-old autistic boy (Miko Hughes) has accidentally deciphered a sophisticated top-secret government code. This makes him the prime target of the ruthless bureaucrat (Alec Baldwin, in one of his silliest roles), and Willis comes to the rescue. This formulaic thriller sets up this plot with a lot of entertaining urgency, but you can't give any thought to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What ever happened to Kim Dickens?
Mercury Rising brings to the screen the story of an FBI agent who takes it upon himself to protect an orphaned autistic boy whom the NSA wants dead for having cracked a multi-million dollar government code.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very Good and Emotionally Charged Action Film
This is an action film with a lot of emotion behind it. It has a real heart felt story that questions plausibility and true credibility at times but it really hits home as it evokes genuine sentiment and feeling through a brutal world we now live in. This to date is the last great action film staring Bruce Willis. His performance of the dedicated civil servant doing what is right against all odds is admirable. His adversary Alec Baldwin stands for all that is wrong with a system that is supposed to protect our way of life and liberties while sacrificing the innocent trying to protect it at the enrichment of his own ego. At the center is a small autistic boy who supposedly can compromise Baldwin's plans who is being protected by FBI agent Willis who has fallen from grace. In simplest terms it is a film of right and goodness against greed and evil. On that level this film works. This film contains one of John Barry's last great scores as it gives credence to the story by bringing our most tearfully compassionate emotions to the surface while driving the narrative with an impassioned purpose. I like this film a lot I think because it takes the hardened tough good guy hero image and on an emotional level shows what drives him and what's really makes his heart tick.
5-0 out of 5 stars good action yarn
Thoroughly enjoyable action flick that holds your attention throughout. One of favorite Brucey movies. The hitman is the most cold blooded assasin I've ever seen in a cop movie. To those claim "leave your brains at the door", its an action movie, its a hollywood movie, what do you expect for Christs sake ? ... Read more

Editorial Review

The delicate issue of student discipline becomes dangerously pointed when a vengeance-seeking mercenary (the perennially underrated Treat Williams) sews a couple of tweed patches onto the elbows of his flack jacket and proceeds to add a few chalk outlines to the blackboard jungle. Although the premise of this intermittently entertaining sequel can't match the goofy novelty of the 1996 original, it does sport a couple of effective action scenes (the teacher's demonstration of the yo-yo's history as a lethal weapon is a highlight), and a talented cast (including Broadway star B.D. Wong as a shop teacher who cares a little too much about his tools) that's fully aware of the numerous absurdities depicted herein. An occasionally effective lowbrow action flick that, at the very least, sure beats the heck out of study hall. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Substitute 2: School's Out
The whole series of Substitutes are excellent movies. Really like Treat Williams in the title roll, but would have loved to see Tom Berenger in more than just the first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Treat Subs For Tom
Treat Williams steps into the role of mercenary-turned-vigilante in Substitiute 2.He plays a guy who's worked with Tom Berenger's character before(or at least has mutual friends).I've always liked Treat Williams. He's one of those actors that's actually very good, yet seems to get thrown into these movies all the time. You'll catch him once in awhile in major motion pictures as a supporting character, but in B flicks he's the star!He seems a little too nice to play the cold hearted mercenary type, but does it well. The plot's similar to the first film in the sense that he goes undercover at a New York high school to find out who killed his brother, get revenge, and take care of his niece.Along the way he brings a fellow merc, teams up with the half crazed Vietnam vet janitor and discovers achop shop operation going on in the school.Nothing terribly groundbreaking, but it's fun to see Williams slapping up the gang banger students who think he's just some pushover teacher.Good mindless action fun if you like that sort of thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars SUBSTITUTE 2 Review!
As is the case in just about every straight-to-video sequel, the original star is out and a newer somewhat lesser known star is in. Treat Williams does the series justice as a mercenary who fills for his slain brother's history class in a mean Brooklyn high school. It wouldn't be a "Substitute" film if he wasn't kicking and punching his students through the halls with the help of a few unlikely faculty members. Good straight-to-video fare with a decent cast featuring B.D. Wong, Michael Michelle, Eugene Byrd, and a few others but Angel David taking over Raymond Cruz's "Joey Six" role is about easy to believe as Tommy Lee Jones filling in for Billy Dee Williams. Oh wait! Anyways, you get what you pay for. ... Read more
