Editorial Review

Take off your thinking caps and toss 'em in a corner, 'cuz you won'tneed 'em when you're watching this deliriously dumb thriller from 1997. Bruce Willis stars as a demoted FBI agent who comes to the aid of an autistic boy whose mind holds a potentially deadly secret. It seems that by gazing on a puzzle magazine and making order out of a hidden system of numbers, the 9-year-old autistic boy (Miko Hughes) has accidentally deciphered a sophisticated top-secret government code. This makes him the prime target of the ruthless bureaucrat (Alec Baldwin, in one of his silliest roles), and Willis comes to the rescue. This formulaic thriller sets up this plot with a lot of entertaining urgency, but you can't give any thought to Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What ever happened to Kim Dickens?
Mercury Rising brings to the screen the story of an FBI agent who takes it upon himself to protect an orphaned autistic boy whom the NSA wants dead for having cracked a multi-million dollar government code.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very Good and Emotionally Charged Action Film
This is an action film with a lot of emotion behind it. It has a real heart felt story that questions plausibility and true credibility at times but it really hits home as it evokes genuine sentiment and feeling through a brutal world we now live in. This to date is the last great action film staring Bruce Willis. His performance of the dedicated civil servant doing what is right against all odds is admirable. His adversary Alec Baldwin stands for all that is wrong with a system that is supposed to protect our way of life and liberties while sacrificing the innocent trying to protect it at the enrichment of his own ego. At the center is a small autistic boy who supposedly can compromise Baldwin's plans who is being protected by FBI agent Willis who has fallen from grace. In simplest terms it is a film of right and goodness against greed and evil. On that level this film works. This film contains one of John Barry's last great scores as it gives credence to the story by bringing our most tearfully compassionate emotions to the surface while driving the narrative with an impassioned purpose. I like this film a lot I think because it takes the hardened tough good guy hero image and on an emotional level shows what drives him and what's really makes his heart tick.
5-0 out of 5 stars good action yarn
Thoroughly enjoyable action flick that holds your attention throughout. One of favorite Brucey movies. The hitman is the most cold blooded assasin I've ever seen in a cop movie. To those claim "leave your brains at the door", its an action movie, its a hollywood movie, what do you expect for Christs sake ? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars burt's machine is to scatterbrained for it's own good
trying to escape the good ole boy image he built for himself in the 70's burt chose to star in and direct is movie based on the bestseller by william dheal, and could have made a most enjoyable movie if he had made up his mind what he wanted to do.
1-0 out of 5 stars "dirty harry" goes to atlanta and bombs
when friend clint eastwood showed burt reynolds the script for "every which way but loose" burt was said to have told him "your steping into my goodole'boy movies, if you make this i'm going to do "dirty harry goes to atlanta" well clint made his movie and burt made his. william dheil's novel served as a starting point and he threw in a little homage to "laura" just to make sure. what he forgot to do was make his mind up as to weather or not this is funny , action , drama , or spoof. it tries to be all and fails at each. a shot of action in the last 10 mins. does nothing to take the sting of how boring this film really is. i know some people love this one , but not me ,and the transfer is in full screen so even the stuido doesn't have much faith in this one . beware

4-0 out of 5 stars "Do You Think I'll Live?"
I have always been a fan of Burt Reynolds. Sure, the guy has made some of the biggest bombs in Hollywood history, such as "Stroker Ace," "Cop and a Half," and several others too painful to mention. When I say I am a fan, I am not necessarily referring to his best known films like "Smokey and the Bandit,"...or "The Longest Yard." I like Reynolds's seedy looking films, those low budget action flicks that look like they cost five dollars to make. "White Lightening," "Heat," and "Gator" are always worth watching. I used to list "Sharky's Machine" as one of Reynolds's best efforts until I watched it again recently for the first time in many years. This 1981 action/thriller should give the viewer the best Reynolds has to offer: he directed it, starred in it, and made sure to assemble a stellar cast including Richard Libertini, Brian Keith, Charles Durning, Rachel Ward, Vittorio Gassman, and Henry Silva. In fact, you will recognize so many faces in this movie that you will start to wonder how Reynolds got all of these guys together without spending his entire budget on salaries. Unfortunately, Reynolds's directorial debut drags in spots due to the inclusion of decidedly non-action elements and slow pacing. "Sharky's Machine" is the film version of a book written by author William Diehl.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "I've got My black belt in barstools!"
After seeing Jackie Brown a couple of weeks ago and loving it, I decided to see the other films Pam Grier had done in the past. `Foxy Brown' is the second blaxploitation classic that I saw of her (first being White Mama, Black Mama), and it just blew me away. Though the script is flawed, and has some unrealistic characters, this only adds to the fun, campy nature of the film. The opening sequence rivals those of the James Bond films.
5-0 out of 5 stars Foxy Brown
Foxy Brown was the total package. She was fine, sexy, intelligent and could kick some butt. Long before women were seen as strong, independent and capable Pam Grier was there paving the way for the strong screen women of today like Bridgette Fonda, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Halle Berry and countless others. The movies plot was light weight and at times very corny but Pam Grier brought it all together and made what could have been a real dud a classic. I love the begining when she is dancing and that funky music is playing. She was one hell of a woman and to me still is!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars She's A Whole Lotta Woman!!!
The undisputed queen of soul cinema Pam Grier is most recognized for her role as the veloptuous vigilante heroine, Foxy Brown - a superbad sista who takes vengeance upon the crime ring responsible for the murder of her narcotics agent boyfriend. She utilizes her street smarts, her sexuality, weapons and the help of a neighborhood "anti-slavery" committee to acomplish her mission.

F/X 2 is a great ingenious film with plot and action! F/X 2 stars Brian Brown and Brian Dennehy as Rollie Tyler and Leo McCarthy and they are together for one last adventure to stop Mob from stealinggold Medilians from Vadican embassy in intaly!Great film! Very inventive and well thought out! I Like this movie despite what the movie critics thought about this fim in 1991! I wish there was an F/X 3 but unfortunatly that didn't happen. Despite what others say the movie great and is better then the original movie from 1986. Go find it! It's great movie!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad film, but still the weakest of the series
In the context of the Death Wish Series, Death Wish V: The Face of Death is definitely the weakest entry. On its own, this isn't a bad action-thriller, especially if you're a Charles Bronson fan.But it doesn't have the entertainingly squalid gang caricatures or brutality of the first two films, it doesn't have the war-like scale of the third and fourth films, and it doesn't have the tongue in cheek qualities of the third or the playful meta-level irony of the fourth.Bronson also doesn't have the same intensity or charisma here, particularly in the earlier sections of the film, although the final reels are satisfying enough.
1-0 out of 5 stars thank goodness this is the last of these
i have to admit that i loved the first and third death wish movies( the second was one of the worst but i still found parts of it fun) but after the third the series went downhill fast and became just action with a body count and lost most of the fun that made the others worth watching.

Gene Hackman is a career officer assigned a routine mission well beneath him: deliver a prisoner (Tommy Lee Jones) from Europe to the United States. However, the simple assignment becomes a daring cat-and-mouse game played as the last flames of the Cold War are flickering. This is the first of three films that teamed Jones with director Andrew Davis. In 1989 Jones was a wild card: an actor respected but only popping up in grade B fare. After Davis's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Well Done Military Suspense Thriller, With Gene Hackman
This movie has always seemed to me to be one of the most efficient, best crafted of its type, the military suspense thriller. And one of the most under-rated, too.
4-0 out of 5 stars STRONG PERFORMANCES HIGHLIGHT THIS THRILLER
Somehow "The Package" seems to have become one of those films that fell through the cracks of the general public interest and has never received the credit it deserves as a top-notch action/thriller.With a cast featuring Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones you have two magnificent, veteran actors who play well off each other throughout.Hackman plays Career soldier Johnny Gallagher assigned to deliver a package from Berlin to the United States. The package just happens to be Thomas Boyette (Jones)who is a military prisoner.
2-0 out of 5 stars Pre-packaged thriller cliches
Gene Hackman plays a career army man who is duped into transporting a prisoner to the US as part of a complicated assassination scheme in this tired, contrived relic of Cold War paranoia.High ranking military officials on both sides are in cahoots to derail disarmament talks and Hackman, along with ex-wife Joanna Cassidy, are the only ones who can stop them.Stock secondary characters are on hand to provide a piece of needed information or pull our heroesEfat out of the fire and then die on schedule as required by the screenplay so that the viewer can feel the Sense of Danger and Urgency. The twists and turns of the plot are uninvolving and the climax is thoroughly conventional. The talented cast does what it can to elevate the proceedings. ... A dark and spare thriller about irresistible forces headed for a collision with an immovable object. The latter is the local sheriff in a small Arkansas town (Bill Paxton); the former are a trio of L.A. drug dealers (Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Beach, Cynda Williams), who, having committed a multiple murder, head for that tiny town on the lam to hide out with Williams's family. Directed by Carl Franklin from a script cowritten by Thornton, the film contrasts the converging parties: Paxton as the eager small-timer who resents getting the high hat from the FBI and aches to prove himself; Thornton as the explosive bad guy who looks like a pussycat next to the sadistic Beach. In the middle is the subtle, low-key performance by Williams, who has secrets neither side is aware of. Compelling and energy-charged, without taking a single obvious step. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Would've given it nil stars if I could've...
Dated, derivative, self-indulgent & unintelligent. This is truly bottom of the range stuff. The acting, directing, soundtrack and script are all dire.None of the characters are even remotely sympathetic, in fact I was hoping they'd die slowly and painfully.I note that Billy Bob Thornton was both star and a scriptwriter - methinks his true nature is revealed in the script and the part he chose - an arrogant, amoral, misogynistic, self-important coward (with zero sense of humour).Don't waste your time watching this drivel, it will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth that no amount of tequila can erase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indie gem...Paxton can act...
Like most people, I saw this first on cable. About the same time, I saw Sean Penn's directorial debut, "The Indian Runner". I had a great respect for Independent films, like, forever, and "One False Move" is among the best. Carl Franklin is to be commended for putting the script (Billy Bob & Tom Epperson) to film in a concise fashion. I don't agree with previous reviewers who thought it needed more ground. This is indeed an original. Bill Paxton, in his first lead role, is excellent, and hasn't been as good since (though I liked his smarmy performance in "True Lies") and the wonderful Cynda Williams won awards for her performance as Fantasia/Lila. The film score is legendary...indeed, Peter Haycock & Derek Holt wrote a score that has been used in a whole bunch of cheesy films of the 90's; I don't really know if it was original for this one, but the use of the music by Terry Plumeri was effective and haunting. Billy Bob was a fine psychotic, and the most frightening performance of all came from Michael Beach as Pluto, never breaking a sweat as he slit a throat. Paxton really carries the film, along with Ms. Williams; you really want these people to survive.Life might be like that; a great exposition of good and evil, and delivered in fine fashion by the wonderful Carl Franklin.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre is good?
I was very disappointed after reading all the glowing reviews for this movie and then watching your average "bad guys on the run" movie.Gee, Billy Bob Thornton plays a crazy bad guy who shoots people and he doesn't like cops at all; he even uses bad language!A friend was watching it with me and he thought I was watching the Lifetime channel. This movie just plodded along down cliche boulevard. ... Read more

Poor Rosanna Arquette ended up in this Van Damme potboiler about an escaped convict who moves onto the farm of a widow (Arquette) and her two kids. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Van Damme Movie Ever!
Well first of all I never really liked Van Damme's movies, well it's not so much that I didn't like them but it was pretty much the same thing over and over again...he would beat up people. However, this movie had a different story line.It wasn't only an action movie, but a drama as well.I think that he did a great job potraying the character and he really took on the role of the "father" for the little boy.I think he did a great job with that, since when you looked at him, you could tell that he wanted to be part of that family.I think he should do more movies like this, and it is definetely worth seeing/buying...you'll enjoy it :).So don't wait any longer, BUY it.Oh and this one isn't only for guys...my mom saw it with me and she enjoyed it as well.I believe females will enjoy this one as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars BESTDAMME MOVIE EVER!!!!!!
This was such a well made movie and i don't understand why JCVD doesn't do more movies like this! They made JCVD more human than he was in films like Universal Soldier and Bloodsport because he was not the "i will kick your ass any day" guy. He was the "i will kick your ass to protect this family" guy. It also had an ending that the others didn't, but i won't spoil it for you. I love this movie, JCVD's best work!

Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as maverick cop Lou Burke, the only lawman tough enough to go undercover in a prison recently plagued by suspicious deaths. Posing as a hardened con, Burke stands up to sadistic guards and makes martial arts mincemeat out of brutal inmates, all the while investigating those mysterious murders. Following the standard Van Damme formula at the height of the actor's B-picture popularity, the script essentially inserts him in a series of increasingly nasty situations from which he then has to kick, punch, and chop his way out. For services rendered, the Muscles from Brussels gets to kiss Cynthia Gibb, who plays a lawyer assigned the dubious task of posing as Burke's wife. With Van Damme safely tucked into his story formula, a slightly more discriminating viewer can find pleasure in a supporting performance from Robert Guillaume (as an aging inmate), while freakier types will enjoy top-drawer nemesis the Sandman (Patrick Killpatrick), a psycho killing machine who forces poor Burke to break a sweat. 4-0 out of 5 stars Jailhouse Rock n Sock 'Em!
Plot: There has been a string of unsolved murders at Harrison Penitentiary. Detective Louis Burke (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is sent undercover as an inmate to investigate. With the help of his assigned "wife" (charatcer Amanda Beckett, played by Cynthia Gibb), he manages to uncover a few dirty secrets about the place. Once he truly gets into the heat of the situation, he discovers that the guards and prison officials themselves might even be involved. The whole scheme is starting to make sense, and that doesn't stay a good thing for long. His presence at the prison is becoming too much of a danger for the conspirors, and he becomes next on the hitlist. But Burke isn't going down easy. At least that's what we think, until an old enemy -- Christian "The Sandman" Naylor (Patrick Kilpatrick) -- is transferred to the prison to finish him off for good. The fight to solve the murder mystery is over, yet the fight for Burkes life is only beginning. 5-0 out of 5 stars it kills me

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Not a Hugh Grant fan, but this movie was terrific.A real, authentic thriller.Gene Hackman was great as the villain, as usual. While posing a medical ethical conundrum (how do you find cures for diseases without experimenting on humans?), this movie has edge-of-the-seat excitement and was fast paced.
3-0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity.
The premise of this film is both excellent, interesting and credible. It had the ability to be "Coma" for the 90's, and aswell as raising the issue of the vulnerability of the patient role it highlights the occasional corrupt, explotative nature of the Medical profession. All very real fears, all quiet likely and delivered with believable conviction by a sterling cast. Grant is not always quite believable but this may have more to do with his established typecast as the eternal British fop and speaking as an Englishman I have to say both he and then Girlfiend Hurley (who produced this film) do overplay the Englishness with grating regularity! Hackman is brilliantly menacing, Parker is subdued and intelligently simmering.
4-0 out of 5 stars GENE PLAYS GOD
EXTREME MEASURES asks the question just how far will medicine go in the name of "good for the common man."In this adaptation of Michael Palmer's novel, Hugh Grant plays a morally consciable physician who finds himself involved in a plot by a famed neurologist (Gene Hackman) to discover a cure for paralysis and other neurological disorders.Surrounded by prospective recipients of his research, he goes to the homeless population to use as disposable guinea pigs in his quest.Director Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) has a strong command of the actors and the action, and it's a thought provoking entertaining thriller, with a surprise punch at the end.

The director of Chow Yun-fat's first Hollywood outing, music-video veteran Antoine Fuqua, seems to be trying to squeeze the charismatic Asian superstar into a conventional American action-hero mold, and the results are dispiriting. Fuqua never lets this high-spirited actor smile, fetishizing him as a gunslinging clotheshorse in a series of garish, scenery-smashing battle scenes. As a paid assassin whose former employers turn against him, Chow enlists the help of an illegal documents specialist played, with surprising grit, by Mira Sorvino, and then spends most of the time fending off squads of killers in mirror shades. The movie is art-directed and photographed fit to kill (even the most routine incidents are eye-gougingly colorful) and edited to a hip-hop beat. It's garishly superficial. The frequent gunplay duels may keep action fans riveted, but they'll hate themselves in the morning. Read more

Chow Yun Fat does not miss a beat in his American film debut. He has the same cool magnetism here that was on display in his Hong Kong films."The Replacement Killers" plays like a homage to the Hong Kong action films with the benefit of having it's shining light in the leading role. The film that this most reminded me of was "The Killer" except here the character is nobler and is less ambiguous. It would appear that the makers of this film did not think Western audiences would accept a protagonist with gray areas. That quibble aside the film is slick hard-nosed entertainment.Mira Sorvino aquits herself well as Fat's unwitting sidekick. If this film serves a purpose it may attract interest in Fat's Hong Kong output.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah! Chow Yun Fat!
I loved this movie...I know, I know, chinese cliche martial art exploitation film BUT...
3-0 out of 5 stars Cliched But Well-Made
"The Replacement Killers" was apparently Chow Yun Fat's debut in western movies, adding to his already formidable career in the Asian movie industry. Chow Yun Fat, Mira Sorvino, Jurgen Prochnow, Michael Rooker and others working with John Woo have created a reasonably slick actioner that is full of some pretty obvious cliches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do you know the Jungle's Creed ?
I love good underrated movies, they make you feel like you're part of a priviledge club of connoisseurs. I'm not a movie buff, but Deep Cover has all the elements you would expect of a classic : great acting, memorable lines, interesting ( and logical ) plot and a decent ending.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal
I was quite happy with this sale. The response time was quick and the movie was in great condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Under appreciated
Deep cover does in fact age well.Others have commented on Fishburne's solid performance but no one seems to have appreciated how good Jeff Goldblum was. He was the perfect counterfoil as a wannabe badboy. The movie was well directed and keeps you interested all the way through. The characters are mostly well fleshed out.The ending is a bit watery but you flow with it. Lots of memorable scenes. ... Editorial Review

Do you know anyone who hasn't seen this movie? A box-office smash when released in 1993, this spectacular update of the popular 1960s TV series stars Harrison Ford as a surgeon wrongly accused of the murder of his wife.He escapes from a prison transport bus (in one of the most spectacular stunt-action sequences ever filmed) and embarks on a frantic quest for the true killer's identity, while a tenacious U.S. marshal (Tommy Lee Jones, in an Oscar-winning role) remains hot on his trail. Director Andrew Davis hit the big time with this expert display of polished style and escalating suspense, but it's the antagonistic chemistry between Jones and Ford that keeps this thriller cooking to the very end. In roles that seem custom-fit to their screen personas, the two stars maintain a sharply human focus to the grand-scale manhunt, and the intelligent screenplay never resorts to convenient escapes or narrative shortcuts. Equally effective as a thriller and a character study, this is a Hollywood blockbuster that truly deserves its ongoing popularity. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good film update of old series
Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) and his wife, Helen (Sela Ward) seem to have it all, until she is murdered. The police believe that Richard killed her, and there is enough evidence to convict him, and a serious miscarriage of justice results in Richard being on a train on his way to prison. But, there is a train accident, Richard escapes, and he goes on a quest for his wife's true killer, while trying to keep one step ahead of the police, led by Marshal Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Fugitive
Excellent movie!Having watched the TV series as a child, it was refreshing to see the story done in today's setting with the different techological elements of our lives woven into the story.Of course that is not unique in itself but the results were stimulating and exciting to behold.

Set in the cinematically picturesque Southwestern desert, Willem Dafoe plays a small-town lawman called out to a remote location after a dead body is found by some tourists. Along with the body, there is a briefcase with half a million dollars in it. Well, he becomes absolutely obsessed in solving the case. The audience never knows why he feels the need to solve this case instead of turning it over to the federal authorities, other than to spice up his otherwise boring job. Judging by his muscle car and quest for adventure, and despite being happily married with a kid, he seems to be going through a bit of a mid-life crisis. He gets his adventure when he finds a phone number on (actually Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Cast, Good Action
I bought this movie because I really like William DaFoe and Sam Jackson and they both deliver in this movie.Micky Rourke plays a slick role with a surprising twist.Take all three of these guys and independently they produce a great movie. But, put DaFoe, Jackson and Rourke together, and you have a killer movie!

2-0 out of 5 stars great cast no logic
We have a lawman who for no explained reason starts to investigate the cause of death of a man with 500,000 on him and it all goes down hill from there. There is no rhyme or reason to the story. I gave it two stars because the landscape is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars White Sands, Classic Rourke and Defoe
White Sands is Micky Rourke and Willem Defoe in classic style. I think this was the first movie I saw with both of them and I've been a fan ever since. The suspense keeps your attention from the beginning of the movie. Willem Defoe is a small town Sherriff's deputy in Colorado who finds a dead body with a briefcase filled with money. The adventure only starts there as he finds himself in New Mexico meeting an arm's dealer (Micky Rourke) and eventually winding up in White Sands, NM. Samual L Jackson is in this flick as well and as I said, all afore mentioned are in classic form. A great movie for mystery/adventure seeker. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars William Petersen, the most underrated actor ever.
I agree with JJ Justice's review, "Manhunter" is great and the "Red Dragon" remake was a travesty. It truly was a slap in the face to the great early work of William Petersen and director Michael Mann.
5-0 out of 5 stars William Peterson ,Michael Mann
Everything stems from this one movie."Silence of the lambs"."C.S.I".Know it,accept it and give William Peterson the recognition he never receieved and in my opinion there is'nt anything anyone can do to make up for a great injustice.Remake of red dragon which i thought was the biggest slap in the face to William Peterson,Manhunter should have been re-released in theatres and i dont care if it made less money than "red Dragon".Check out "To live and die in L.A." if you havnt seen it yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars DON'T believe it every time they say "director's cut"
This is Michael (LAST OF THE MOHICANS, HEAT, THE INSIDER) Mann's far superior, first film adaptation of Thomas Harris' RED DRAGON. It's superb. Creepy, tense, edgy, slick when you don't expect to be, and genuinely even-handed about the story's anti-hero Will Graham and the supposed monster Francis Dolarhyde (portrayed as no less a human than the cops who pursue him), MANHUNTER is a artfully crafted thriller that stands apart from the other "Hannibal the Cannibal" films. I also far prefer Brian Cox as Lektor, he gets under your skin without making an incision, while Anthony Hopkins splattered the screen with patent medecine ookiness.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Laugh
Chuck Norris's brother is hauling freight through a small Texas Town when the local sherif arrests him on a trumped up charge. The town confiscates the load, kidnaps his brother, and puts him in jail.
5-0 out of 5 stars they don't make B-movie action films like this any more
and it's a shame, these days most direct to video b-movies are not all that great, but back then, they were fun, sure the acting and story are not the best, but it's fun, and really that's what you come for right? fun, good action with some funny scenes in there.
3-0 out of 5 stars Semi-Trucks, CB Radios, Frozen TV Dinners and Chuck Norris!!
This short (65 minutes) movie features Chuck Norris as a truck drivin' guy who just happens to be an expert in karate.Chuck is J.D. Dawes, a good name for a trucker if there ever was one, and he comes home to find his kid brother riding dirt bikes in the obligatory two-brothers-bonding scene.Well, before you know it, little brother is off on a haul, alone of course, gonna pick up some frozen TV dinners for delivery.Gee, I hope something doesn't happen to him along the way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say something once, why say it again?
This is one of those films that preys on the fears and emotions of its viewers, but does it rather well. It purposely contrives situations in order to gain our sympathies for the characters it wants. "Lethal Weapon 2" did this by having the evil South African government offical proclaim, "Diplomatic immunity!" after committing a heinous crime. In "Dirty Harry," the Scorpio Killer claims police brutality after receiving a well-deserved beating. Makes for a nice story and usually achieves its goal, though it simultaneously insults us as viewers. Nonetheless, I have a weakness for serial killer movies, especially when written well. This one is particularly memorable because it features Clint Eastwood in the title role, though Andy Robinson is at least as remarkable as the Scorpio Killer. Harry Callahan is dubbed "Dirty" because he refuses to play by the rules. He represents the biggest challenge to the killer, so the cat and mouse game ensues. Can Harry stop him before he kills again? Long a fantasy for upstanding citizens, this film is increasingly on its way toward becoming a reality (courtesy the NRA), due to laws permitting concealed handguns and to shoot now, ask questions later. Fed-up citizens with firearms are exactly what America needs to be great once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, violent, and shattering....and funny, too....
The film critic Pauline Kael referred to this film as a "fascist" film, implying that simply because a cop who was disgusted by idiotic paperwork and having to obey bureaucrats and politicians who understand nothing about the world we live in decided to take an unconventional approach to fighting crime.Believe me, liberals like police, too. They're not going to care about certain people's rights when it comes to having a safe neighborhood. But then on the flip side, conservatives have never really liked civil liberties, unless they're arrested, then they want as many liberties as they can get.I personally hate when people with political axes to grind drag a film into their idiotic little world, because they're out to prove their point, and they'll distort the meaning of the film. It'll leave a bad taste in your mouth after you've seen it, because you've heard the verbose intellectuals talk and talk and talk and talk about it ad nauseum. This is a great film, one of Clint's best and the best film in the Dirty Harry series. It's intelligent, exciting, and funny as hell. It's politically incorrect, and that's a damn good thing.Life is politically incorrect, and that's a damn good thing also. There are many great setpieces, such as the opening bank robbery, the speech on why they call him Dirty Harry, the scene where they shoot Scorpio, and the final scene.A masterpiece....

5-0 out of 5 stars GO for it, Harry!
I'm awaiting my copy of "Dirty Harry" - then I'll have all five of the...well, "Dirty Harry" movies.Let the snivling liberals whine about "police brutality," "read him his rights," ad nauseum - you can just BET that there are a LOT MORE of us that condone everything Harry does and stands for. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great action vehicle for Jim Brown fans!
Jim Brown is Slaughter, a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who's not long back from the service when his parents are killed in a car-bomb murder. It turns out Slaughter's dad (it's never explicitly stated, but he was apparently involved in a mild hustle, like the numbers) somehow stumbled upon a computer printout of a Mob operation's payoff roster. But he was killed before he could make a deal for its safe return.Slaughter then makes moves to find the killers, while being shadowed byKim (Marlene Clark), an undercover federal agent.A shootout at an airport puts Slaughter at odds with the U.S. Treasury Department, who then send him to an unnamed South American country to track down the surviving crooks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Old school action!
This is quite an entertaining 70's action movie. The acting, as in most action movies, is a bit superficial, but the overall movie is solid.Jim Brown, given his impressive size, is perfect as a tough action hero. The majority of the movie is set in Mexico, thus giving it an exotic feel. The racial epithets by the villains also give the movie an appropriate sense of the palpable racism of the 70's. Rip Torn gives an over-the-top performance as the main bad-guy Hoffo. As noted in the other reviews, Stella Stevens is perfect eye-candy in her supporting role.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhere between Superfly and Dolemite
As a white boy from Ohio, I've always had a fondness for Blaxploitation flicks from the 1970's.They were loud and bold, action-packed and takin'-no-sass.They felt like renegade productions, and I dug everything about them. The funky soundtracks, the outrageous fashions, the over-the-top acting and action.Watching them now just takes me back to the 70's like an old song.
