5-0 out of 5 stars Three views of the heroic in a stratified society
Since there are over 300 reviews of this magnificent film already posted, I would like to discuss some aspects of this film that are rarely discussed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the greatest film ever made
Seven Samurai is the greatest film made by perhaps the world's greatest film director. The string of films from Rashomon to Red Beardrepresents an almost unbroken run ofclassic films (all but one starring Toshiro Mifune), not the least for the fact that Akira Kurosawa was able to infuse humanism and populism amongst the chaos and indifference in a wide variety of settings. Individuals could make a difference in an indifferent society (Ikiru, Red Beard) or work together for a common cause (Seven, Sanjuro), while in other films the inhumanity of class culture (The Lower Depths, Stray Dog, High and Low) was laid bare.Yet at other times, it could be seen that Kurosawasoured on the idea thatsociety could change for the better in films like The Bad Sleep Well and Record of a Living Being, giving way to the chaos of Fortress of Blood and Yojimbo. But whether pessimistic or optimistic, Kurosawa's films seldom fail to both entertain and inform.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Have To Be Remade At Least It's Scorsese
Having already seen "The Departed" viewing "Infernal Affairs" is something of a blessing and a curse. As superlative as "Infernal Affairs" is it ultimately suffers in comparison to Martin Scorsese's remake.Though Scorsese departs to a degree from his Asian source material his effort is deeper in characterization and he ratchets up the tension better. That said, "Infernal Affairs" is much more economical in it's storytelling and despite your familiarity with the basic premise there are enough differences between the two films to keep you on the edge of your seat.I only wish I saw "Infernal Affairs" first so I didn't have to make the ultimate comparison.Final verdict:"Infernal Affairs" is a great film but "The Departed" is a masterpiece.Of note is the inclusion of an alternate ending on the disc. The makers of "Infernal Affairs" chose the correct one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Americanized, but still great
Just so people who have seen this movie before aren't caught by surprise, I should point out that this release (the one with the strange Asiansploitation cover art) has had some major editing done to the subtitles compared to prior releases. I'm not a native speaker of Cantonese, nor a professional translator, so I can't say if the prior version had a perfect English translation. But, this version goes too far in trying to make the movie understandable to us naive and insulated Westerners.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good acting, good story, just not terribly exciting
I still don't get what that girl with the gun is doing on the DVD cover, it just doesn't make any sense at all.The movie is very good, but it doesn't have an exciting start, just as it didn't do anything for me at the end.Everything in between is good though. The story moves along at a good pace and keeps you involved. With how much I have heard about Tony Leung being the mole in the gang and Andy Lau being the mole within the police, I guess I was just expecting more out of this movie.I am not a big fan of Anthony Wong, in fact I hate him in many movies but this I thought was his best performance I have ever seen.He gives you that seriousness that you need in a cop drama.

5-0 out of 5 stars The action is the highlight
Mainly, the movie follows the aftermath of the very successful video game, Final Fantasy 7.If you haven't played the game, the movie will probably not make as much sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good!
I bought this on a whim and was pleasantly surprised at how good it is.The graphics are incredible and the story is true to the FFVII game - it's a far cry from the 'FF: Spirits Within' movie all the Final Fantasy gaming fans were duped into watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars It seems to be perfect, except.
The one special feature that I was hoping would be included is the music video for "The Touch." I remember recording it on beta off of some music video show that Nickelodeon had way back when and I would watch that thing over and over. I then went out and bought the soundtrack on vinyl and would play it every night before I went to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Faithful and Near Perfect DVD Release
If you were a child during the 80s, chances are you remember the Transformers fondly. This DVD release of the franchise's big-screen effort is almost certainly the best. It features widescreen and full-frame versions of the film and a slew of fan-oriented special features.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME FOR A REMAKE!
I truly beleve the disney verion is better than the fox verion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanment for any age.
How wonderful it is to be able to experience what is surely a cherished family classic for a generation of people from another country. This version of "My Neighbor Totoro" features excellent video quality as well as a very well done English audio track for those who wish to avoid reading subtitles.
1-0 out of 5 stars New Voice and Sound Tracks!
I was very displeased with the newest version of Totoro. With Dakota and Elle Fannings voices, as well as all the other new voices, made the movie sound horrible and very unlike the original version of Totoro! The newest version could never be compared to the original version! The original version of Totoro should have never been fixed and it will ALWAYS be better than the newest version! I couldn't even get through the first disc, without hearing the new annoying voice sound tracts! VERY DISSAPOINTING! What a waste of money... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Imprint: Good Horror Movie
Scary! The really gross sort of scary too. Not a wise idea to watch it alone on a stormy night. That's what I did & had bad dreams because of it. Yeah, the acting wasn't great, but I feel it was good enough for this kind of movie. An actor who was a demon on the tv show Charmed played the main character. I thought the story was pretty clever & interesting. It kept you on the edge of your seat. You never knew what to expect.Watch this if your looking for it good scare.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very good but not bad.
The story is interesting, not scary as I expected, the prostitute, except the role which Ms. Kudoh played, all looks like rebellious teenages of present days in Japan.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mike!! what were you thinking during casting?Pick any old washed up actor?
First, let me say I loved this movie. It was the first movie that was so grotesque that I had to turn away. I would of loved it even more however, if they did not cast whomever that washed up actor was in one of the lead roles. He was over acting and very dull. I wasn't the least bit interested in hearing from him in fact I found him to be quite annoying at times yelling like some dumb wino who has never acted in his life. The rest of the cast was excellent. I would of just liked to see mike play more on the ghost that was present in the room in the beginning of the film to add some horror aspects to the movie instead of just shock factors by showing dead fetuses and such. Overall, it was pretty interesting just next time I hope he picks a better male actor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Movie
Not having read the book, I cannot comment on how it compares, yet the negativity towards this film is surprising. It may not have the emotional depth that some claim the novel had, but it was a very well-made film overall. The costumes and sets are gorgeous, and the actors (although not Japanese) do well in their roles. The disc looks and sounds great and the second disc houses several better than usual featurettes on the creation of the Geisha world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Example of great film-making
This is not the kind of movie I would normally go for, BUT it was so well done that it deserves 5 stars !

4-0 out of 5 stars A charming tale of forbidden love
Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger (in that order) give a great performance in this Hollywood epic tale of forbidden love. With this movie you get all the best of Hollywood technology, scenery, audio, video, casting and acting. The story in my opinion gets a little long and drawn out, losing some of it's appeal potential. It consists of a 20 year relationship of two cowboys who fall in love in 1963 while herding sheep together in Wyoming. These two break the rules wherever necessary to share their romance known only to them and their clueless wives who eventually figure it out but don't know how to bring up the subject. As their marriages become strained over the years, their love for each other continues to grow, but can never become the full time relationship they crave. The story could have in my opinion been written much better for a screenplay. I think most anyone could have written a better ending for this saga, but that is nothing new for Hollywood. No matter how many millions of dollars they spend to make the perfect movie, none of them seem to know how to end one. If the subject matter of this film offends you, you WILL NOT want to see this one. Although it never gets explicitly graphic with the sex scenes, there's enough there to offend opponents of such film subject matter. All in all, I enjoyed the movie on DVD. I do not have a widescreen television, but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary on this widescreen version. Perhaps someone with a widescreen could better review this version. Beautiful scenery from Wyoming and mostly Canada. Great nostalgic representation. I recommend watching Brokeback Mountain if you are into gay romance. It is thought provoking and realistic for the era it represents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost a masterpiece, but not for everybody's taste...
I found this a little too long, a little too slow, a little too sad to rate five stars. Worth seeing once, it is an honorable effort to portray the power of forbidden love between two modern-day cowboys who would obviously vote Republican on all but gay issues, and perhaps even on some of those. Now that the film is a couple of years old, I think it is safe to reveal that one of the leads does not survive the film. That was the most disappointing part...we come to care about the men, yet one passes from this world with only the briefest of depictions. I was surprised it did not win the Oscar as best film, but the awards were given out before I saw the movie. Now that I have seen it, I think it can be fairly called one of the ten best films of its year, and one of the three most talked about, but not deserving of the top honor for its season. Good performances for sure, but the script could have used some trimming and some punch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost love ... but reality strikes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
A beautifully realized excursion into a magical world. My attention never wavered as I was struck by one completely unfamiliar concept or scene after another. Often fantasy works leave me a bit cold with the Shakespearean posturing and ambiguous dangers that any variety of spells can be used to bail out of but, this matter-of-fact tale of wonder needs no pretensions and achieves majesty quite easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysterious, full of spirits
This is my third experience with Ghibli studios and I am not disappointed. I am actually starting to develope a taste for their animation. The drawing and coloring was again as great as I expected. The movie starts in a very mysterious setting leaving you a little scared what would come next. As movie passes on you start to see new kinds of spirits. Not many of them are bad, they are just seeking a resting place away from materialistic world. The movie is in general not meant to be about scary ghosts or vengeful spirits. It is actually about coexistence of men and spirits and how they try to reach a balance. In cases spirits help men or vice versa. Myazaki explains in the special features how this animation is based on his real life experience and it seems that he actually modeled the little girl after a friends daughter whom he knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars another amazing anime
This seems to be Miyazake's most personal work, clearly a serious design. It is set in an imaginary time which blends the time of the ancient gods (Shinto style, gods of place and nature) with the settlement of humans and the coming of metalworking and war. The world is not in balance, and a distant conflict between industry and nature has wounded one of the gods of the forest, which is then killed by a sentry boy as it rampages into farmland he guards. The evil controlling it transfers to him, beginning a slow takeover, and he must journey to the origin of the conflict to find a way to cure himself and incidentally, as he will learn, to try to restore balance. But this is not a simplistic tale, he finds there are other characters in play, and there is good and evil in everyone, and no easy balance. The Princess (Hime) of the story is a mysterious human who has been raised by wolves (which are themselves powerful forest gods, a little reminiscent of the Amerindian Coyote myth), who becomes both his ally and his enemy. The story is not easy to understand. It has many Japanese mythic elements but even then, it is a work of Miyazake's unique imagination, and is not intended to be simple or to have a clean resolution.
5-0 out of 5 stars Princess Mononoke
I have seen Princess Mononoke on T.V., and it rocks! It's just awesome like all the other movies that japanese guy makes.

3-0 out of 5 stars VENGEANCE Served Cold
Yes, I'll be the first to admit that I was hugely disappointed in LADY VENGEANCE (aka SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE), Chan-wook Park's third stop in his trilogy of films exploring ... well ... er ... vengeance, mostly. In a wild vision that began with SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, was viscerally amped up with OLDBOY, LADY is decidedly ... er ... feminine?
5-0 out of 5 stars Park's third and final vengeance film takes a different, and effective, approach to the subject
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, the final installment in Chan-wook Park's vengeance trilogy, is a far cry from it's predecessors Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance & Oldboy in the fact that it attempts to justify the idea of vigilante action - and, to an arguable degree, succeeds. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Film from Park
If you're reading this, odds are that you've seen some of Park Chan-Wook's other films, particularly 'Oldboy'.Suffice to say, if you liked 'Oldboy' I can't imagine why you wouldn't like 'Lady Vengeance' as well, nor do I believe that this movie will convert you if you aren't already a fan.A few people will try and tell you that this is actually quite different from Park's last film, but I really don't know where they get this conclusion. 'Lady Vengeance' has unusual, stylish and artfully composed shots, surrealist inserts, skewed chronology and storytelling, themes of revenge, loss, family and reunification and an unpredictable mix of abrupt violence, black humor and surprising pathos. In short, it has all the stylistic trademarks that defined 'Oldboy'.It does, as the film moves along, eventually venture into more purely bleak pastures somewhat reminiscent of 'Sympathy...' in tone, but overall it still reminds far more of it's direct predecessor than of that other film.Arguably, it isn't much of a step forward from `Oldboy' in terms of style or content, but few people can pull off a film like this the way that Park can, so he's allowed to spin his wheels a bit if he so desires.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic reborn.
I first saw Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind when it was shown on cable TV in the late 80s.I remember being amazed at the artwork, the design of the aircraft, the way the insects and the jungle were brought to life.I had seen Star Blazers and was watching Robotech but this movie was on a whole different level. Now the masterpiece is back.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fair start for Miyazaki...
This film was hard to rate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anime of the Wind
I don't know anime, but I know what I like. I've always said it, and probably will always say it. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", a 1984 film by Hayao Miyazaki, is a film I like a lot. It's unique, it's got atmosphere, and it's got a great message, I thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
I'm not a big fan of `kicking and punching' films. My partner is... so I've grown immune to them, to some degree. But Hero is one film that stands above all the others I've endured. The action is... well, the action you always get in this kind of film, but there's also so much more. A tender love story, plot twists, and some of the most stunningly beautiful cinematography you'll ever see. The colours, the flowing movements, the locations... it's like opening a box of chocolates and seeing all your favourites. Wonderful

I suppose I can't complain about a Chinese nationalist movie. After all, we have many ourselves, some of which are considered true classics (e.g., High Noon; Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) and some are kitschy classics (e.g., Red Dawn).
4-0 out of 5 stars The released from Edko Films was better.
I owned this dvd but it's a region 3 code and was released by Edko films. I have two edition of this movie, The Theatrical Version which presented in 2 disc and The Directors's Cut Version. I love everything about this movie and also the special features. I think that I have made the right choice by buying both edition because The Theatrical Version released in 2 disc which the second disc contains lots of supplement material such as the making, trailer, interview with the cast and crew, etc.and the The Director's Cut, only one disc which is it's an uncut version. I don't know well about the region 1 code dvdof this film. so my reviewed was based on the region 3. I've searched the comparison both region code dvd and bought the region 3 dvd straight away after I've found that region 3 was better for this film. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual splendour highlights martial arts-lovetriangle plot
"House of Flying Daggers" is one of the best-looking movies you'll ever see.Yimou Zhang, known for such over-the-top spectacles as 2002's Jet Li flick, "Hero," may be the most visually exuberant director this side of Baz Luhrmann.Whether it's an ornate reception hall, or a lush bamboo forest, or a snow-covered landscape, "House" cannot offer anything less than a breathtaking scene. 4-0 out of 5 stars The First Time This Was 5 Stars
The very first time I saw this amazing film I was wrapped around its finger. Everything about it is perfect from its scenery to the perfectly paced and executed fight scenes. After the first time you see it the more and more you watch it the more you notice little things that are big. Basically the things that made the film beautiful start to unravel. One thing I hate that I am seeing a lot of is the digital blood, so when someone is hit with one of the daggers it looks computer generated when the dagger hits someone and then the fake unneeded blood comes out. There are also the daggers that look digital and for some reason they feel the need to do a bunch of flips and turns while the dagger is in midair. Some of the scenery looks fake like in one scene Jin and Mei are walking down a hill and there is a very pretty background of trees and waterfalls but you notice that it's fake and looks like a painting. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent job from Zhang Yimou.
Another excellent job from Zhang Yimou. Also, my review still based on region 3 dvd for this film which was released by Edko Films. It's a 2 Disc Special Widescreen Edition. Everything is perfect for this dvd. The clearity of the picture and Dts Surround Sound was extremmely amazing. The special feature is in Chinese Mandarin and no subtitle. So you have to learn Mandarin or need a translator to understand what are the crew and the cast have said in their interviews. The bonus material includes the making, photo gallery, artwork gallery, cast and crew profile and the hidden menu which was really hard to access containing the music video, the way Andy Lau dubbing in studio and a few tv spot and trailer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing
I happened to catch this documentary by accident while channel surfing on one of the HD channels and couldn't take my eyes off the screen. This is easily one of the most beautiful and fascinating films I have ever seen.I recommend getting the DVD to watch "the making of" special feature. It is almost more amazing how they made this film.

5-0 out of 5 stars winged
Video was well done. The inflight closeups of the migrating birds was spectcular. Was a bit too long and became boring but not to take away from the quality of the program. The bits and pieces of pollution really struck home. Those parts you do not forget.I had seen parts of the video a another location and decided to purchase my own copy to keep and loan.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Photography
I first saw this on HD Net on my cable channel and had to have a personal copy. The photography is absolutly stunning; extremely sharp focus in very difficult shooting conditions. I think the first question that goes through peoples mind is "How did they get those up close shots?" I was pleasently surprised to find a special feature section on the DVD which gave the entire story of the five year effort to bring this to the screen.

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed. I cried. I damn near pee'd my pants.
I am MAD about this movie! Can't tell you how many times ive watched it but it never seems to get old with me. I compare it to another fav of mine, The Matrix. Love it when the good of the little people of this world overpower the evil doers. I think every one has a little Kung Fu Hustle inside of them. You just need to know where to look.
5-0 out of 5 stars From walking disaster to kung fu master...
My first experience with Hong Kong producer/director/writer/actor Stephen Chow came when a good friend recommended Shaolin Soccer (2001), a film which I enjoyed a lot primarily due to its kinetic energy and off the wall, mind bending special effects, so when I heard Chow was coming out with another feature, titled Kung Fu Hustle (2004), I was very interested...sadly, I missed the theatrical release, but I was able to catch it on video and I wasn't disappointed.Co-written and directed by Stephen Chow (God of Cookery, Shaolin Soccer), who also shares credits in producing, writing, and original music, the film features Chow, along with Qiu Yuen (Kung Fu Mahjong), Wah Yuen (Kung Fu Mahjong), Zhi Hua Dong, Kwok-Kwan Chan (Shaolin Soccer), Chi Chung Lam (Kung Fu Mahjong), and Siu-Lung Leung (Kung Fu 12 Kicks).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Funny, and Full of Effects
Certainly the best kung-fu movie I've ever seen, Kung Fu Hustle is loaded with effects and humor, and stunning fight sequences to boot.Try and watch any regular martial arts movie afterward and all you can do is yawn, even the great Bruce Lee is tired and played-out in comparison to Kung Fu Hustle. The movie continues to top itself throughout, with an escalation of fight scenes that peaks with the hero jumping higher than the clouds, seeing Buddha, lightly stepping off a bird, and plunging to earth to deliver a blow capable of knocking a fifty-foot hole in a building! This aint just wire-fu, it's wired-fu with hilarious weirdness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The old good vs. evil in a new exciting setting
This review is based on the Disney version of the movie, voiced by James Van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill and others. The basic premise is extremely simple - it's the old good vs. evil, science vs. nature scenario, but the animation and imagination is so cool that it looks much more complicated than that. 4-0 out of 5 stars THE SHEETA IS FALLING! THE SHEETA IS FALLING!
Pazu, a young boy, is looking for something to take his mind off the drudgery of working in a mine all day. He has to work because he's an orphan and he has to take care of himself. Then one day, inexplicably, he sees a pretty girl his own age floating slowly down from the sky with a glowing pendant around her neck. The girl's name is Sheeta and she had fallen out of a airship trying to get away not only from sky pirates, but also the government agents that had kidnapped her from her home. Both parties want the power behind the strange pendant and are willing to put Sheeta's life at risk to get it. Sheeta's only friend and ally is you spirited Pazu, whose dream of finding the mythical sky island of Laputa has an odd link to Sheeta's lineage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Facinating Artwork, my Favorite Studio Ghibli Presentation
Rather than rehash the plot yet again, I will give my overall impressions of the movie.I found the story to be very compelling and the artwork, particularly that of the village and the mines (what I like to refer to "Wales in Hell"), is spectacular.Excellent voice talent, including Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame, adds to the overall enjoyment.Like the man once said, "Sometimes you have to lose to win" and this is my favorite Studio Ghibli presentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly shocking
Old Boy is the second film in the Revenge Trilogy by Park. The first is Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and the final being Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brutal and enthralling yet touching
There's an often-used joke when it comes down to Quentin Tarantino: that pick any film and he probaly had something to do with it. "Written, Directed, Starring and Catered by Quentin Tarantino" for an example, since he's responsible for bringing to stateside such films as Hero and Hostel. While I did enjoy Hero, even if it felt like Crouching Tiger Part 2 and less said about Hostel the better, Oldboy was often mentioned as the one good film he had his name on. Checking it out, I found they were quite right as its one of the better foreign films I've seen.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but nothing spectacular.
I was afraid to watch this because it has been said over and over how ultra-violent a movie Oldboy is.I tend to be a little squemish, and nothing here bothered me that much (but to be fair, I closed my eyes during the tooth pulling scene). The whole octopus thing, was unpleasant but nothing here made this a horror movie. It reminded me of a less stylized Kill Bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Asian masterpiece.
"Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" is one of those films that comes along once in a lifetime. It is a true cinematic masterpiece; in every sense of the word. Ziyi Zhang, Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh are simply awesome in this film. This is the film that started it all. Many great epic films have followed like: "House of Flying Daggers", "Hero", "Musa The Warrior", "Fearless", "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" and "The Legend of Suriyothai". From the awesome martial arts, to the love story, to the scenery, it doesn't get any better than this. Even the inspiration for this film, "A Touch of Zen", although awesome itself, can not compete with this historic film. MUST BUY!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars a simple story, but a beautiful movie
Now if you were to tell me that Ziyi Zhang was not a martial artist by trade before watching this movie, I would have never believed you.But when woo ping gets to do the action, he gets what he wants.
5-0 out of 5 stars Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Before I had seen "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" I had never seen any sort of martial arts movie and had only seen one film in a foreign lanugage with the original language spoken and subtitles. However, this film was so intreguing that I felt immediately absorbed.
