Editorial Review

There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
A beautifully realized excursion into a magical world. My attention never wavered as I was struck by one completely unfamiliar concept or scene after another. Often fantasy works leave me a bit cold with the Shakespearean posturing and ambiguous dangers that any variety of spells can be used to bail out of but, this matter-of-fact tale of wonder needs no pretensions and achieves majesty quite easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysterious, full of spirits
This is my third experience with Ghibli studios and I am not disappointed. I am actually starting to develope a taste for their animation. The drawing and coloring was again as great as I expected. The movie starts in a very mysterious setting leaving you a little scared what would come next. As movie passes on you start to see new kinds of spirits. Not many of them are bad, they are just seeking a resting place away from materialistic world. The movie is in general not meant to be about scary ghosts or vengeful spirits. It is actually about coexistence of men and spirits and how they try to reach a balance. In cases spirits help men or vice versa. Myazaki explains in the special features how this animation is based on his real life experience and it seems that he actually modeled the little girl after a friends daughter whom he knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic reborn.
I first saw Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind when it was shown on cable TV in the late 80s.I remember being amazed at the artwork, the design of the aircraft, the way the insects and the jungle were brought to life.I had seen Star Blazers and was watching Robotech but this movie was on a whole different level. Now the masterpiece is back.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fair start for Miyazaki...
This film was hard to rate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anime of the Wind
I don't know anime, but I know what I like. I've always said it, and probably will always say it. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", a 1984 film by Hayao Miyazaki, is a film I like a lot. It's unique, it's got atmosphere, and it's got a great message, I thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Villains, But a Little Disjointed

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series!
I've loved Star Wars since I don't know how long, and after I saw Episode II, I knew I couldn't wait until the final instalment. So thankfully, the guys at Cartoon Network gave us junkies something amazing to tide us over. This microseries bridges the gap between episodes II and III, and fans who have only seen the films will learn a great deal more about several characters from the films should they choose to watch these.
5-0 out of 5 stars better than the movies
As I'm sure most reviews of clone wars make clear, these are better than the prequel films. More action, less standing around discussing politics and forbidden love, and stories that don't grind to a halt every 20 minutes.

William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two words Donkey--'Shut'....'Up'
Perhaps one of the best all around movie out there, animated or not. The chemistry between Donkey and Shrek is hysterical.
5-0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC FAMILY FILM THAT HOLDS EVERYBODYS' INTEREST
FIRST IMPRESSIONS -- If one were to imagine a happy ending where 'Belle' from 'BEAUTY & THE BEAST' became a beast in the end rather than the beast becoming a Prince, one can get an idea of what Shrek is all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charming fun from an unexpected hero
Whereas Pixar always focused on good, clean family fun in its pictures, Shrek came into the spotlight because Dreamworks decided to skew the jokes a little more towards the older audience, while maintaing the basic family-friendly atmosphere. It worked, and Shrek was the film that proved it didn't take Disney/Pixar to create animated box-office gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars The old good vs. evil in a new exciting setting
This review is based on the Disney version of the movie, voiced by James Van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill and others. The basic premise is extremely simple - it's the old good vs. evil, science vs. nature scenario, but the animation and imagination is so cool that it looks much more complicated than that. 4-0 out of 5 stars THE SHEETA IS FALLING! THE SHEETA IS FALLING!
Pazu, a young boy, is looking for something to take his mind off the drudgery of working in a mine all day. He has to work because he's an orphan and he has to take care of himself. Then one day, inexplicably, he sees a pretty girl his own age floating slowly down from the sky with a glowing pendant around her neck. The girl's name is Sheeta and she had fallen out of a airship trying to get away not only from sky pirates, but also the government agents that had kidnapped her from her home. Both parties want the power behind the strange pendant and are willing to put Sheeta's life at risk to get it. Sheeta's only friend and ally is you spirited Pazu, whose dream of finding the mythical sky island of Laputa has an odd link to Sheeta's lineage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Facinating Artwork, my Favorite Studio Ghibli Presentation
Rather than rehash the plot yet again, I will give my overall impressions of the movie.I found the story to be very compelling and the artwork, particularly that of the village and the mines (what I like to refer to "Wales in Hell"), is spectacular.Excellent voice talent, including Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame, adds to the overall enjoyment.Like the man once said, "Sometimes you have to lose to win" and this is my favorite Studio Ghibli presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let Your Kids Watch This!!
To this day, I still remember watching The Last Unicorn. Why? I was only about 5 years old and it haunts me to this day. PLEASE. If you love your kids, don't let them watch this unless they're at least 10 years old and unimpressionable. I had nightmares from this show for months. If you're older, this is a great show. It's refreshinng and different. Now that I'm older, I love it, but I will NOT show it to my children. Really, it should be rated PG10 or something. Way too scary for little kids in the G category.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy sound, lousy video. Stay away!
Don't buy this DVD! This DVD is playing in my living room right now, and I took the opportunity to get away and write this review. We popped this into the player and settled in for our Friday family movie & pizza night on the couch. I've never seen this movie, and I don't think I ever want to watch it all the way through. The picture and sound quality are both so lousy that I can't stand to watch for more than 5 minutes. I bought this as a surprise for my wife, who loved this as a kid. And as much as she loves it, she's even noticed how warbly the sound is and isn't enjoying it very much. Also, being full screen, not wide screen, much of the picture is cut out. There's some scene where two characters are talking to each other from opposite sides of the TV screen, and you can hardly see them... you mostly just see a castle wall.
5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this movie.
I REALLY want to watch this movie amain. I would give anything. But in my town it is not at the video-stores or at any stores I have been to. I liked the unicorn the best. The red bull was scary and so was the harpy. The prince was handsome. It was so touching and the animation and the music was beautiful. I haven't seen it since I was 8 and I would LOVE to see it again. I would strongly recommend buying this movie. It is one you will want to see over and over again. P.S. I think this movie should get an award. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One for the kids, can produce a few laughs in adults too.Very family friendly.
Get these movies, they are just funny to watch the fuzzy little ewoks fly around and get into all sorts of trouble. It is really afordable now, so you might as well top off any collections you have. These are very family friendly, with simple plots that even young kids can follow and get into.Definately G rated...with only mild spooks at times.Even though these are cheesy, they do have that feel good endings.Enjoy these with the family.
4-0 out of 5 stars EWOKS!
Once, at a toy store, I saw this movie. I thought,"No. The ewoks just don't look right." But later,on Amazon, I decided to look it up, since I like the cute little ewoks so much. Mom got the movie for my birthday. I watched it very soon, but I didn't know the disk was double sided, so by accident I watched The Battle for Endor first. So watch the red side first. Although the movie does not seem like Star Wars, it wisks you off to the forest moon of Endor with some old friends, and some charming new acquaintences. The Caravan of Courage is not as good as The Battle of Endor because there is not as much Ewok fighting action. I cried a bit at some sad parts, and my kid brother got scared of the Gorax, a big hairy monster. But as a young lady, I think the Ewoks are so CUTE! I'm pleased that they made an Ewok movie for Ewok fans! Now for the suggestions. I would not suggest getting this movie for little kids that get upset when "Good Guys" die, or are afraid of scary masks or monsters(My brother hid in the kitchen). My Dad says,"It's not just corny, but it's 80s'corny!" But this is the cutest movie I have ever seen! If you like Ewoks, this movie is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great entertainment

5-0 out of 5 stars Bakshi's best film
This is one of my all time favorite movies.I saw this film back in the 70's right before Star Wars came out and I remember how I loved the characters the most, the hip old wizard, the babe, and the totally cool assassin, a villain turned hero (I never liked elves or fairies, or hobbits either).
5-0 out of 5 stars A Bakshi gem
Ralph Bakshi was one of the most innovative minds who saw the potential of animation for adults. His work is always an eclectic blend of fantasy and reality, the bawdy with the profound. In this world of escalating violence and terrorism, Wizards can have many new meanings with a very old message about Peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars I guess most people just don't get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
`Serenity' is the coolest sci-fi movie in years, it always being in the top DVDs here proves that in itself. If you love the TV series `Firefly', but haven't seen this movie, you are really missing something. The story is truly and simply amazing. The characters are back with just as much attitude as they had from the series.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun with future-past soup.
Dialog immediately caught my attention. Flowed with a sort of rhythm the way it's crafted. The cultural fusion was fun and interesting. Story held my interest. Yes. This is a good time. Want more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A one off
Heavy Metal remains one of my all time favourite animated films. It blows a loud raspberry at political correctness and takes the viewer on a completely uninhibited, devil may care ride. Sure it surfs adolescent fantasies but has a truly great sense of humour which is at its best in three particular episodes - Harry Canyon, Captain Stern and So Beautiful, So Dangerous.
4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Original, Impossible to Comprehend
Let me begin by quoting the tagline from "Heavy Metal": "Columbia Pictures takes you beyond the future to a universe you've never seen before." Rarely has a phrase been able to perfectly capture the essence of what it's describing. This movie does exactly that: through art, music, and sex, it takes you somewhere you've never been before. However, I can't say whether or not that's a good thing. To be completely honest, I have absolutely no idea what to make of this movie. But I suppose I have to make an attempt, and as I go about it, I find that the word "overwhelming" comes to mind. The various styles, themes, and characters of this traditional cel-animated fantasy clash to an incredible degree, almost to the point of maddening fascination. This is the type of movie that can easily be praised for it's incredible animation; the drawings ranging in appearance from realistic to stylized to overtly comical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal, the greatest piece of American animation.
If you think any of that s**t Walt Disney made was the pinnacle of American animation, think again!!Heavy Metal crushes everything Adolf Disney made (he was anti-Semetic, hence "Adolf").I don't know why this only gets a 4 star average while there's virtually no criticism for that overrated pile of dogs**t The Nightmare Before Christmas (Tim Burton sucks).I recommend this for fans of alternative animation.

1-0 out of 5 stars ugh
This is an extremely dry anime. The manga version by Masamune Shirow is filled with bits of humor. Not so for the anime. The character Batou was especially funny in the manga, but, for reasons unknown, he is the driest character in the already humorless anime version.

Editorial Review

The J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy classic set in Middle-earth was adapted into this excellent 1978 animated feature first broadcast on television. Codirectors Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., working from a script by Romeo Muller, are faithful to Tolkien's story and for that alone they get big points. The vocal cast can't be improved upon: Orson Bean is perfect as Bilbo Baggins, the timorous hobbit who grows brave on his adventure with the wizard Gandalf (John Huston). Otto Preminger is the voice of Elvenking, Richard Boone is Smaug, Hans Conreid is Thorin, and Brother Theodore is very effective as the weird Gollum. Terrific for kids and adults alike. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stick toVHS!
Thanks to all the reviewers who panned the DVD because of the bad audio. I was thinking of buying the dvd to replace my vhs copy but i'll wait and transfer it myself since my copy's still in pretty good shape.
3-0 out of 5 stars Its interesting
I really think that it was great that they made an attempt at bringing the classic tale to the screen. I just got my D.V.D. of it today and watched it. One thing I missed - one thing that is in the book, but not in the movie - was that Beorn wasn't in it, neither was the Arkenstone. Most of the music is good enough, but while I liked the trolls and spiders, I did NOT like the goblins nor the elves (with the exception of Elrond and his huge 'crown'). Smagol-Gollum's voice was also done well enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Songs and Animation are first class!!!
The Songs are spectacular. I can't say enough about the music in this master piece of Animation. I saw this when I was a little one and I still watch it!!! (I am now 33.) This is a great adventure and you will get it all!!! Gollum's eye will thrill you. The Animation will grab you. You will be singing along before you know it!!! This is an intense movie where the music adds to help tell this great story. The character voices are amazing. The soundtrack is first class!!!! There is even a great dragon, as well as great trolls, swords, dagger animation, armor, waterfalls, battle-scenes, fire, spiders, and treasure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars War in a Box
Well, I think enough has been said about the series itself, so I'll limit my review to the present Complete Campaigns set. The box is pretty nice and sturdy, with great hand-painted artwork based on the series. Also included is a collector's illustration with the episode guide on the other side.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great item
I already saw most of the videos on VHS, but I wanted to have an all-DVD version. I'm very happy with this collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series!
I remeber watching this on tv.I was pretty young but it was entertaining.I recently rented them all and watched them again. It still entertained me.Thought the animation is a little dated, the series still is awesome. It was basically the truly first of its kind for tv.It also takes from the book, unlike the movie.Though there are still some things not correct (like dizz being a girl), it nails the book and fills in for you.I recomend that you read the book as well as watch this! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There is nothing wrong with my discs or yours...maybe
Okay, I rarely review products unless there is something wrong with them, but I can see I'm going to have to take it upon myself to address this bad disc issue. I own all the Starburst Editions season 1 through the current releases. Yes ADV did a poor job manufacturing these discs. I can see the defects in waves beneath the suface on some discs and what looks like glue on the suface of others, but the thing is ever disc I own plays perfectly. Well there is one disc that stops after the "Prepare for immediate starbust" clip, but it works fine if I just hit the menu button before that. These double sided discs may have trouble playing on older players or cheap non-brand name players, but I have tested them on 6 players, PSTwo's, and PC/Mac drives in my home and they all work.
1-0 out of 5 stars DVD Quality VERY LOW - Series and Extras Excellent!
This reveiw is more about the quality issues with the disc more so than the content of the disc. For the record ADV has added a lot of extras that is not anywhere else. Albeit many are repeated multible times on different disc of this STARBURST series release that could have been better used reducing the compression ratio. As for the quality issues, these are recorded on dual layer double sided disc and as of this writing I have had to send 3 of the 6 currently released back to be exchanged due to skipping, frame freeze, audio cracking etc. The disc were checked on 3 players and a computer and did the same on all of them. So the issue is with the quality or the lack thereof. I have contacted ADV about the quality issues and they have more the most part said ... 'Oh well.' The more pricey collection did not have these issues, but lacked many of the extras and you get what you pay for. Granted to be fair when the disc work, the video and audio quality is fine, but it is annoying to get to the middle of a show and the disc freezes up and up have to skip over 10 or more minutes to get it to play. ADV simply tried to squeeze to much into to small of a space. This collection really should have been put on 4 disc instead of 2. They did not include scene selection either, you can only choose which episode you want to see then fast forward through the tracks after that. As I said I love the show and it is a healthy 5 but this release's quality is a sickly zero. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A look into the future that's stuck in the past. Science fiction without innovation imagination or risk.
Titan A.E. should have been an epic movie full of thought provoking ideas. With talents like the legendary Don Bluth on animation, skilled sci-fi screenwriters like Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Ben Edlund (The Tick) writing the screenplay and stars like Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, Bill Pullman and Nathan Lane doing voice over work and a [...]dollar budget the movie had all the elements of a hit. Unfortunately all these talented individuals failed to become successful when brought together on this project. Titan A.E. is an uninspired mess of a movie with a predictable story, dated looking animation, flat acting and primitive looking CGI. Thanks in part to the box office failure of this movie and several others like Treasure Planet and Atlantis, hand drawn animated movies are currently not being produced by American movie studios. A shame because there are so many great stories to tell using this art form.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling 2-D/Computer Animated Flash Gordon like Space Adventure
Take a ride into deep space in one of the most thrilling animated films ever made, "TITAN A.E." A SC-FI story of survival & war in the 31st century as an evil alien race called the Drej destroy Earth & humanity's last chance of a new planet is with the Titan, the most advanced ship in the universe, it's up to a young man named Cale & a crew of 2 humans & 3 aliens to find it with an enclosed map in the palm of his hand. fantastic spectacular SC-FI film, no other animated film like it, a 21st century Flash Gordon, featuring the voice talents of Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, Bill Pullman, Nathan Lane, John Legiazamo & Jeanne Garafolo. If you love animated films or SC-FI then take the journey through deep space & get ready for life after Earth, in "TITAN A.E. "You can't beat the Drej, no one can, the're pure energy"

4-0 out of 5 stars A Most Intriguing Proposition
This film stands apart from the rest of Disney's canon. It's more of an action/adventure film set in more or less modern times, with no songs or cute cuddley sidekicks. The animation is superb. One can tell some fancy tricks are being done visually, but the results are stunning. The voice talent is top-notch, with Michael J Fox and James Garner doing wonderful work with their roles. The story has some definite holes in it, but the action moves very quickly, leaving little time to really ponder the questions you think up. The city of Atlantis is stunningly rendered, and the prologue is captivating. The sound is spectacular, with great sound effects in the mix. The picture transferred beautifully to DVD, withglowing color and sharpness. This film has too many flaws in the plot to stand alogside the true Disney classics, but it is still better than most anyone else' animated films these days, and definitely better than the direct to video "sequels" that Disney has been putting out lately. Just don't expect the Lion King or Beauty and the Beast, keep your expectations at a reasonable level, and enjoy.
