1-0 out of 5 stars One star for being something to put you to sleep
It seems millions of americans suffer from sleep deprivation.I challenge anyone to watch parts of this movie for one week and have any problems sleeping.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Feast for the Eyes
The mid-1980s was a banner time for E.M. Forster fans. Two of his novels, "A Passage to India" and this, "A Room with a View", were successfully and wonderfully adapted for the big screen. ("Howard's End" would come a few years later.)
5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this movie!!
This is one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. It's funny and beautiful, with a perfect cast. The music and the scenery is breathtaking.I agree with a previous reviewer, I can't think of anything that isn't perfect with this film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars second-best Jason movie yet (FvJ was 1st)
    Location: Crystal Lake Research Facility.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jason in Space?Surprisingly Good Stuff!
Jason X (as in Friday the 13th Part 10) sheds light on a familiar, though not too friendly, face: that of Jason.A "miracle of science," Jason, is to be transported from a maximum-security facility to a research lab.The transfer goes awry and he's once again up to no good before being cryogenically suspended.
1-0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?!
And I thought Jason Takes Manhattan was bad! When I saw the title "Jason X" I knew something weird like this would come. Guys we know we are in the 2000s now but there is no need to make a "future" like film and not even with Jason god.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece/Guaranteed to shed a tear!!!
An extraordinary film, The Remains of the Day, brings to the screen the story of an English butler, during the interwar period (and after), whose loyalty, devotion and integrity surpass all known human limitations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can Anything Better Be Done In The Remains of The Day?
If you haven't seen this movie and are asking, "Is it recommendable?"The answer is enthusiastically yes.If you liked the movie and are asking, "Should I buy or rent the DVD?"The answer is yes.The bonus materials are excellent at expressing the intents of the creators of the film.Ishiguro says in a featurette, "I intended the story to be one that could take off quite easily into the metaphorical sphere, so that people could actually apply it to their own lives . . . I wanted it to be universal, human story . . . If I was writing a how to book on how to waste your life, the English butler idea encapsulated two good, decent ways in which you could waste your life. One was emotionally, and the other was politically." John Calley, the producer, said, "We were just dazzled by the possibilities of dramatizing missed chances, lost opportunities - the things that were all victim of inappropriate allegiances that lead to a finally disappointing conclusion."

More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely AMAZING movie!
This movie is absolutely incredible! I watch it over and over. The singers are amazing, and there are so many more songs that aren't in the Disney Cinderella. I highly recommend this movie for people of all ages who love fairy tales and beautiful songs!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Uh...Hellooooooo!
All this talk about race! Are you looking for reality here?No one questions a pumpkin turning into a coach, mice becoming horses...come on! The music is beautiful, the story is magical and believe me, alot of kids won't even question or notice the ethnicity! They're usually color-blind until we point it out to them anyway. This was a wonderful story and CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars great way to share a classic
this is obviously my own personal opinion, but i have always been a fan of this movie since i was in highschool (which was about 5 years ago). i thought it was refreshing to see a multi-cultured cast in the production instead of the usual conformity of race and color. it's a great movie for kids to enjoy and my own daughter loves this as much as i do. as soon as i saw that it was on DVD i had to snatch it up for myself. i can't stop watching it, i love this video so much! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars She's A Winner
I was expecting a predictable teen movie rife with cliche and populated with vapid, albeit good looking, young actors. Was I ever wrong!"She's All That" is a real charmer. It offers cogent insights into teen life and is not without it's tender moments. It's ultimate message, that true change is not cosmetic but comes from within, does not come off as forced or cynical. The cast is quite appealing.Special kudos go to Rachel Leigh Cook as Laney, the "ugly duckling".Cook makes Laney's transformation believable and subtle.Matthew Lillard also has a show-stopping turn as an obnoxious MTV reality show reject.Look quick for Sarah Michelle Gellar in a cafeteria scene.

1-0 out of 5 stars Soooooooooooo bad
Teens don't talk like that.I rip off of 16 candles and so utterly cliched that it felt like a parody.

2-0 out of 5 stars Laney Boggs was robbed...
I first saw this movie in high school-I believe i was a senior-And I remember thinking, "High school is NOT like this at all!" Throughout the whole movie. Now, I do understand that this is a fictional movie and therefore it is set in a fictional world, where anything is possible (except Laney Boggs becoming Prom Queen of course), but I felt like this movie was so far out into la la land with it's premise and execution that it was hard to really relate or like any of the characters in the movie. First of all, why do movies always have to over-exagerate the bitchiness of a Prom Queen??? In my school, the Homecoming Court and Prom Court were chock full of nice, friendly kids, and the ones who took home the crowns were voted on because of there personalities, not because they were HOT like Taylor Vaugh or whatever her name was. I hate that stereotype because it doesn't relate to any school-at least any school in the midwest! Also, What was so terribly heinous about Rachel Lee Cook that they would pick her over ANY other girl in the school-So what if she wore ugly clothes and had big glasses-the girl has a killer face and a tiny little body...her only flaw was her love for being a loner. Freddy Prinze Jr. was at his peak in this movie though-he seems to have gone WAYYYYYYY downhill since this movie was released. The best part about this movie is the cheesy makeover sequence when Laney walks down the stairs to Sixpence None The Richer's song KISS ME. The BIGGEST let down of this movie to me though was that Taylor won Prom Queen over Laney. Seriously, that still pisses me off to this day. The ending was just a complete and utter bomb...I wanted that skank Taylor to lose and cry or get totally laughed at or at least have had SOME minor bad thing happen to her. She was just a horrible, snotty witch and nothing bad seemed to happen to her. Oh well, this movie is pretty lame...I will always remember it though because I saw it in the theater with three of my close friends our senior year. Cheesy movie...Laney Boggs was robbed!!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Pedigree vs. Filigree.Filigree wins.
Period dramas are, by definition, delicate commodities: they're balanced on that, ahem, "razor's edge" between high brow and just plain fussiness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Slice Of Edwardian Life (or Lives)
I don't mean this to be snarky at all, but I recently decided that I wanted to watch HOWARDS END again--only to discover that I was actually watching it for the FIRST time!I must have been thinking of REMAINS OF THE DAY--or maybe I just wasn't thinking.Does that say more about me than it does about Merchant and Ivory? Is it really true that if you've seen one M&I production, you've seen 'em all?Or am I just having another one of my cinematic senior moments?
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! One of the best movies I've ever seen
This movie is pitch perfect in almost all respects. It is beautiful to look at,the parts are all well cast and the acting is brilliant. The happy redeeming ending made me feel good about myself and life though it comes after several tragic events. Some important themes are well examined in the plot and though melodramatic the story is well told and holds the viewer's interest throughout. I had to read the book after seeing the movie and was surprised how very faithful the movie was to it.The book and movie really enhance each other! ... Read more

Chris Farley was, in my estimation, one of the best sketch comedians ever.Saturday Night Live greatly improved when he became a cast member. His work was brilliant.Sometimes his size and willingness to do pratfalls were overused, but he was perhaps the best there has ever been at using those gimmicks for laughs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I Finish?
Dana Carvey is one of the funniest and most talented comedians to have ever appeared on SNL.Although his film career did not truly take off, like many other SNL alumni to follow, he is among the finest when it comes to comedic material and timing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funniest of the 'Best of SNL' so far
In my opinion, out of the three SNl Best Of's that i have watched so far (Will Ferrell volumes 1 and 2, and Chris Farley) this is the funniest and best yet. Dana Carvey is a brilliant impressionist and is able to transform his own natural voice into anything he wants to. Whether it be The Church Lady, Hans, Garth, George Bush...etc. The other two Best Of's that i watched actually left out some of the more funnier sketches. I believe the sketches compiled into this DVD are the funniest Dana Carvey did. Also, the extras are great too. You can watch Dana's original audition for SNL, watch many outtakes, a sketch that was actually completely cut from the actual show, and his appearances on Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien. Highly recommended for Dana Carvey fans, SNL fans, or just comedian fans in general...Expect to be laughing to the point of tears in this great DVD! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars SURFIN FOR LAUGHS
Made at the height of the Ninja craze in the early 90s, SURF NINJAS is a pretty flat and lifeless movie.Leslie Nielsen is wasted in what is merely a glorified cameo and the movie's youthful stars don't have the oomph to carry the movie, although an early Rob Schneider is a boost to the proceedings.Unless you're extremely fond of the ninja genre, this one's better avoided. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars HARD, GRITTY WW2 MASTERPIECE!
Released by HBO in the shadow of "SAVING PVTE RYAN" circa 1998, this tough, moody portrait of weary American soldiers assaulting the opaque Hurtegen forest, which straddled the Siegfried line on the German border in late 1944, pulls no punches in documenting the harsh, often hopeless reality of an army up against the proverbial 'brick wall"!! There are no "Tom Hanks" style heroes ala "RYAN" here, just hard bitten, war sick G.I.'s, whose harsh cynicism cannot mask the terror filled, often brutal situations they must wade knee deep in!The Gothic decor provides for a very realistic backdrop & the bitter irony that the oncoming battle of the bulge would overshadow this campaign!! A stunner!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars reminds me of Hell is for Heroes
The key for me in a combat flick is reality. historical accuracy, no cliches, avoidance of sentimentality and romanticizations. In the last few years flicks like Enemy at the Gates, Stalingrad, and especially Terence Malick's Thin Red Line do the best. When Trumpets Fade is smaller in its ambitions, production values and scope. But as such it hangs in there with these other achievements except for having a kind of epic scale. The relationships in the screenplay are more believeable than Enemy at the Gates -no romantic sub-plot- have no cultural obscurities for an American viewer -no societal war guilt to overcome like Stalingrad- and except for one brief scene there is no interplay of spirituality that one finds in Thin Red Line though that element is what makes Thin Red Line so resonant and soul shaking. When Trumpets Fade is brisk, direct, hugely existential, and as fatalistic as the other films mentioned here. The special effects are somewhat modest but fully appropriate and not lame in any way and with the exception of a few shots of the enemy tanks it all plays quite authentically. The main lapse in effectiveness is the opening of the film that is a kind of pastiche on a documentary. This is done to set up the historical context of the film's story. This 'educational' bit could have been pulled off better with a different choice of narrator. This film tells a harrowing story that condemns its protagonists to almost certain death or severe wounds, provides them with objectives that can not be reasonably achieved, and thus shows how unvalorous, how unexalted, how simply miserable, sadistic, and emotionally excruciating war is for soldiers. It really doesn't attempt tp glorify American patriotism that is the downfall of other recent large scale productions but actually beautifully shows the extreme pathos enacted between fellows in, as the characters of the film say, "the death factory." This is actually accomplished in the amazing opening sequence of the screenplay and mirrored less successfully in the denoument. In the end the subject is really the randomness of fate, the perseverence of the human will to live -and to die- when faced with complete lack of control over circumstances, and, with quite some poignance, the love of fellows for one another when faced with their unavoidable mortality. The historical battle depicted is a great subject for having been relegated to quite some obscurity in the annals of World War II history. And the producers, director, cast and crew rise to the opportunity to exercise their considerable skills with very little if any of the middle class sentiment that is the downfall of similar flicks that pander to audiences. It is a film making aesthetic that reflects some of the values that went in to a very few films from an earlier era, made much closer in time to the historical event they depict, and so chastened with a sense of reality not glossed over by a false need to be uplifting. Like Hell is for Heroes.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as any war film ever made
This is truly a soldier's film, capturing in a microcosm of film everything which is horrible about war, from the disdain of the field grade officers whose lives aren't in danger, to the horrific decisions and life that the soldiers endured. A prior reviewer explained the inability to capture the reality of the bridge scene, especially given the budget of this film. It certainly caputures everything else about being a soldier and this insane expenditure of men's lives for no reasonable purpose.

2-0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY DISAPPOINTING
I'd prefer to have this tape custome, if possible. But since that's a pipe dream, you have to take what they dish out, and this DVD isn't something I'd want to buy if I had known it was so lame. I didn't appreciate or find amusing the Wayne and Garth commentary, and I can't believe they left out Richard Pryor's classic skit in which he spoofs The Exorcist, with Loraine Newman as the possessed girl. Classic SNL from its first seaon, and it was completely left out. Bogus, man!

Forget decorating your neighbor's house with toilet paper or throwing eggs at passing cars. For a good laugh on Halloween, try picking up "Saturday Night Live - Halloween", a collection of some of the show's best Halloween - themed sketches, featuring classic charatcers and huge stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Could be longer
There are so many great SNL skits over the years, I'm surprised they barely filled an hour.A great one with Gilda and Martin Sheen isn't on here, and strangely, the "Goth" kids are advertised on the cover and intro but aren't actually on this DVD.Regardless, some really funny skits are on here, and it's a great addition to any collection. It will easily become a "must watch" for each halloween. ... The audience for this rickety spoof is probably limited to three groups: diehard fans of Elvira, cultists of '60s horror (specifically the Edgar Allan Poe and Hammer offerings), and people who believe rim-shot, borscht belt humor ought to be brought back. The last group apparently includes Cassandra Peterson, the comedian who dreamed up Elvira; her fondness for vaudeville one-liners is either groan-worthy or infectious, depending on your tolerance for such things. Sample: "The village people say this castle is evil." "Ah, who listens to the Village People any more?" Ouch. Her Mae-West-meets-Vampira shtick wears surprisingly well at feature length (1988's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvira always pleases
This is a fun movie. Not as great as Elvira's first movie but still will have you wanting more. I actually bought this movie first and THEN went back and bought Mistress of the Dark. Haunted Hills is Fun,dark, sassy and a little bit sexy. Why the hell Hollywood hasn't used Elvira more i don't know. Worth buying from Amazon. I will watch it again.

3-0 out of 5 stars not even wonderfull if you Love [...]
Movie unfortunately has very few laughs. All her jokes are pretty much very tired.Does has one funny number in it were she sings a bawdy french song, but thats about it.The one redeming feature is the view Elvira shows,as only she can.But alas, even those are begining to grow old and saggy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Taken in context, this is well-done
When I first rented this over the weekend, I thought it was bad. I expected something more like Elvira's Mistress of the Dark movie, which is fabulous. However, as I started looking at the special features of this film, I realized what the film was trying to accomplish and the budget that they worked with and it was actually a very good film when looked at this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson For Screenwriters
This is a beautifully crafted film, right up there with most other Merchant/Ivory productions. The sense of time and place, the performances, the lyrical mood, the music--all are far above the usual standards of "commercial" filmmaking. E.M. Forster conveyed a powerful message in his novel, and it's right there on the screen. Still....

    Editorial Review

Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin's version of Peter Straub'sbestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it's available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It's still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she's back(with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub's hands it was, and the novel remains the author's finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub's rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ghost Story
The story line wasn't bad.The beginning seemed scattered, but once you got more into the story it made sense.Had a bit of nudity in it which I could have done without.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real ghost story.
A true ghost story in EVERY sense of the word. A story you tell while sitting around a campfire latr at night as a kid. A star studded cast doesn't hurt, either. An under-rated Alice Krige truly makes this movie. If you are looking for a good ghost movie that will give you chills and have you keeping the light on when you go to bed, this is it. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In this quaint Irish comedy about a remote town run by the large number of widows, who are led by the monarchical Mrs. Counihan (Joan Plowright), Natasha Richardson is a newly arrived English widow who brings sex appeal and the possibility of mischief when she starts courting Counihan's befuddled son (Adrian Dunbar). This sets in motion a mystery akin to an Agatha Christie tale, led by suspicious Mia Farrow. The setup is fine and the acting first-rate, but the final act forces its hand far too soon. What starts off as an accessible film turns into a prize only for those who liked Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Light and Lovely
This isn't your typical period romance/drama.I would compare this to the Gwyneth Paltrow 'Emma' as opposed to the Kate Beckinsale 'Emma'.The movie is always played with a sense of whimsy and the actors all seem to be having a good time.Mia Farrow is especially lovely and very convincing as an Irish lady with more that just a little skepticism about the new Brit in town.Natasha Richardson has fun with her role and Joan Plowright could play her role while sleepwalking (I mean that as a compliment).Delightful and recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Took me by complete surprise
I'm not usually one for this type of thing, but lately I've been getting into the genre. You know the "Enchanted April," types and other films, even though I'm a guy. Call me crazy, but there's some good stuff here.
4-0 out of 5 stars no title
This was a wonderful little film, with much the same feel and flavor of "Hear My Song", and also the same actor, Adrian Dunbar.Of course, the plot and scenery were different, but still, it had that same "feel good" impression at the end.Hard to believe that Mia Farrow is 49 years old here. She sure looks terrific. And I love anything Joan Plowright (Lawrence Olivier's widow) is in; she's just marvelous.Set in 1926, the costumes are exquisite.I had guessed the outcome of the mystery, but that made it no less enjoyable.I have seen the guy who played the dentist before, just can't remember where. There were lots of wonderful comic lives that made you laugh out loud; such as England exists just as a place for the Irish to send their unwed mothers (this was set in Ireland). The plot twist was a good one, but Natasha Richardson (late of "The White Countess") overplayed her part a tad too much; otherwise, I might not have guessed it.It was set in a time and place and way of life we'll never see again, a quieter time, a lovely time.We have speeded up our world too much. And you could see it coming here, as Plowright's car speeds along, knocking people down, in the opening scene. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is a bachelor party!
Bachelor Party starring Tom Hanks is so funny, so original, and so mind-numbingly silly, you too will be laughing like a hyenna. I love this film so much, I can't believe my mom let me watch this semi-dirty film when I was little, what was she thinking? Hanks is great as always, I love his physical comedy, what a genius he is. Bachelor Party is probably the only film about a Bachelor Party gone array. There are some naughty scenes but nothing too grotesque occurs. Love it, love it, love it. Such a guilty pleasure, don't miss this classic gem.

3-0 out of 5 stars has it's moments
let's face it,this is much better when you're a kid getting away with watching this on late night cable when the parents are asleep.but when you get older as i have you see it for what it really is,a stupid 80's comedy that still has it's moments.but this movie has been so hyped up throughout the years which makes it disappointing watching it today.as with alot of 80's films of this genre alot of scenes are just down right embarassing and bad.but scenes like a donkey od'ing on coke is still funny,as well as the guy trying to slit his wrist with an electric razor.this is also good for seeing hanks when he was funny.but aside from tawny kitaen and some other eye candy the casting really sucks.maybe it's the casting of that guy from dance fever that ruined it for me as his appearance makes me cringe and he's one of the main characters.i've seen this enough times throughout my life to know that i can finally put this one to sleep.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thank you 20th century Fox for Tom's breakthrough film!!!!
We all know Tom Hanks, the Academy Award winning actor, but you have to check this out, the young comedic actor from T.V.'s Bossum Buddies, in a breakthrough performance. No doubt this film helped him get roles in Splash and The Money Pit. Plot, simple, every soon to be groom has had a (stag party)...just not quite as crazy as these guys have. Schoolbus, donkey, drugs, strippers, tranvestites, stag films, horrible 80's music, and one big ass hotel suite. Without Mr. Hanks, this film would be nothing. He pulls it off with wit, quickness, and that goofy look, that only Tom can do. Alot of his lines were adlibbed by him. My favorite scenes, When he is cooking for his future bride and playing tennis as if it were baseball...funny stuff. Typical 80's fare without the rauchiness of Porkey's, Hot Dog, Spring Break, and all the others. Most notibably, can you even name anyone that went on to stardom from those films? Guess not. Bachelor Party is a riot of a time, rated R for nudity and some bad language, but definatley a B+ in the mix of all the 80's comedys. By the way, to this day, Tom Hanks is still proud of this film........now that is a man. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Panic Broadcast Tribute Works Pretty Well
Offered as a tribute to Orson Wells' famous Panic Broadcast, another attempt is made to tell a tale of alien involvement as if it were really happening. This time actual news people play themselves (like in the movie DAVE).These include Bree Walker Lampley and Sander Vanocur. The effect is ruined a little when one of the first on-scene reporters is played by John DeLancie (Q of Star Trek fame). The story opens with the report of an earthquake. It quickly turns out that the quake was caused by a massive meteor strike. Then there are reports of two others around the globe. At the US location, Bree Walker covers a story about a young girl found at the site of the impact. Then it is revealed that the three strikes hit at the same time and that they form a pattern. This is too much for coincidence. There must be intelligence behind it.
1-0 out of 5 stars It's no warning, it's Predictable!
When I saw the movie, it was so predictable. Halfway into it, the broadcasts were so lame as well as the so-called live-footage. Total rip-off of "War of the Worlds." Reminded me
5-0 out of 5 stars Ah, Childhood Memories
When I first saw this movie, it was during it's original broadcast on TV. I was 11 and I begged my parents to let me watch it, depite the numerous disclaimers. We'll even now I think I should have skipped watching it. This movie was the source of most of my nightmares as a child. The 'Orson Welles Factor' really worked on me back then, and I knew it was just a show. It was chilling to the very end, I can still see the ending shot in my head as clear as it was when I watched it in the 90's. ... Read more

I have been on a mission for months. As someone who appreciated "Profit" on its short and glorious run ten years ago, I purchased this DVD on the first day it came out.In the last year, not only have I watched and re-watched it with several friends (it's a lot of fun to view with beer or cocktails)--but I've loaned it to many people who have simply never heard of it.To me, there are two types of people in this world: You're either or "Profit" person or not! And, trust me, if you don't see the appeal in "Profit"--you aren't invited to my party.
