3-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Détente Cold War Tensions Sent Up in a Now-Quaint Period Comedy
Some of the bloom is off this relatively genial 1966 comedy that satirizes Cold War-era attitudes well before détente was established between the two sides. Directed by Norman Jewison, the film now has a relatively prosaic quality that makes the then-alarming situation between a group of Soviet soldiers and the townsfolk on an island off Massachusetts not terribly exciting. Adapted by William Rose from a book by Nathaniel Benchley, the story concerns a Russian submarine that runs aground on a sandbar on U.S. soil. Eight crewman led by Lt. Rozanov are dispatched to find a boat big enough to pull the submarine free. They first encounter a New York family vacationing on the island, a musical comedy playwright named Walt Whittaker with his wife and son. The Whittakers gradually overcome their fears to help the men out but not before the rest of the town is up in arms about a perceived Russian invasion. It all leads to a tense confrontation, but a surprise turn provides all with a greater sense of their brotherhood and the value of peace.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank the Russians for coming!
This movie is great for anyone with a sense of humor. Everyone in it gave it 110% and made this movie the best it could be. It's the kind of movie you'll watch again and again, just to laugh.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming
We enjoyed this film in the theaters long ago and I found as many laughs watching it again. For the younger viewers (under Bay of Pigs age) it may have lost some of the political nuances. But would still be amusing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Smothers Brothers
Sorry to disagree with William, but I remember being annoyed with them replacing Smothers Brothers with Hee Haw, and being pleasantly surprised at how good it was.Perhaps what he's remembering is a time slot difference in his area?I don't have the DVDs yet, so I can't speak to the quality of them, though I have no reason to doubt the other reviewers on that issue...

2-0 out of 5 stars Too bad Time-Life acquired the rights to this show
It's wonderful to have the opportunity to acquire this show on DVD. The jokes are still as corny as ever, the music still as good as ever, and Junior's delivery still cracks me up.

Editorial Review

This underrated film by director Paul Mazursky stars Richard Dreyfuss as an underemployed actor who is offered a great acting role, though outside of New York. Still, beggars can't be choosers and he accepts--only to discover that the part involves impersonating the dictator of Parador, a troubled Central American country on the verge of revolution. The dictator has died, but his chief adviser (Raul Julia) doesn't want that news to come out; he'd rather continue the charade that the big guy is still in charge. And to his surprise, the actor discovers that he enjoys the acting challenge, until he figures out that Julia is positioning himself to take over as the country's true strongman. Naturally, Dreyfuss also discovers that, aside from enjoying the perks of power (including the late dictator's toothsome mistress, Sonia Braga), he actually has the power to do some good--to Julia's chagrin. Dreyfuss captures the actor's insecurity, while Julia is hilarious as the wild-eyed adviser to whom torture is second nature. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy
Really, that says it all.It has a stunning cast with Richard Dreyfus, Richard Dreyfus, Raul Julia, Jonathon Winters and several other film greats who all deliver stellar performances.Dan Florek of "Law and Order" has a small role.It was fun to see him as a young bald man.Seriously, this movie is amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Dreyfuss
I am not a big Richard Dreyfuss fan.In fact most of the time I can't stand his brand of overacting. However, he kills in this crazy farce.Along the lines of Kevin Kline's "Dave", Dreyfuss finds himself the perfect double for a deceased president. However, in this case it is a dictator in a volatile third world country. The slapstick is dead on hilarious and the dialogue brilliant. You will find yourself quoting the movie as part of your daily conversation.I first saw this movie on TV about 16 years ago and fell in love with it.I searched several times over the years to find a copy of it and finally this year hit the jackpot on Amazon. You can't go wrong with this comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moon Over Parador
A very funny light comedy with Sonia Braga, one of my all time favorite female movie stars. Richard Dreyfuss really shows his comedic timing and is brilliant. Raul Julia as the intimidating bad guy was an excellent choice by the casting director. Kudos ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Rosie O'Donnell :-)
Rosie O'Donnell is Great. She is the best Actress around. I grew up with the Flinstones as a kid. That's why I enjoy this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good family fun
It is a real treat to see the flinstones first live action film if you are a fan of the cartoon series. It is a film that adults and children can enjoy together. The town of Bedrock looks great and it looks like it does in the cartoalso good playing the role ofon show.John Goodman was an excellent choice for the role of Fred. Rick Morranis is also does a good job portraing the role of Barney. The rest of the cast is also good. You also see Halley Berry have small role in the film. The sequel is not that great because the sequel is a prequel. I am not a big fan of prequels and not a fan of this one either. There is not alot of star power in this film. The kid will enjoy more than the adults. But it is kind of interesting to see how Fred and Willma first met and how they get their pet Dino. All an all this is good family fun for you and your child. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Jonathan Winters, a comedian whose improvisational style began breaking all the rules back in the 1950s, looks back on his long, strange career in this documentary filled with some of his most inspired bits. In a clip from a TV appearance in the early 1960s, Winters enters a room filled with hats ranging from medieval crowns to space helmets. In the course of several minutes he changes hats at a furious pace, and as each hat goes onto his head, Winters also assumes the facial expressions and voice of a new character. It's a very funny and very weird bit that few other comics could pull off. Robin Williams, who has always been lavish in his praise of Winters, appears in typically manic interview segments to comment on him as a performer. Winters's wife and children also provide their perspective, and Winters provides insight into how he comes up with his bizarre performances and some memories on the ups and downs of his career, which includes a dark period when he checked himself into a mental hospital. The biographical material is interesting, but of course the real gems in this production are the many clips of Winters performing. He is seen morphing into characters on television programs dating back to the early 1950s, and in one odd segment, he improvises routines in the aisles of a hardware store. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wanting More
Jonathan Winters is probably my all-time favorite comedian!I liked this video but wish it had been longer and that many, many more of his comedy routines had been included. The clips were too scattered and too brief, and it just whetted my appetite for more and was frustrating.Appearances by Andy Williams and Robin Williams didn't add much.I did enjoy learning a little about Winters' personal life over the years, and seeing him as he was a couple years ago.I must say I was very glad to locate ANY video about him, but it would be wonderful if someone could put together a complete set of ALL of his routines! That would be fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Look into a unusual mind
This is a video which is sometimes shown on PBS. It is biographical in nature and truly shows the breadth of his comedy. You'll see Winters as you've probably never seen him before. There is improvisational humor galore and there's also black humor (The Execution). It is very amusing to see the "Straight Men" so totally lost and just enjoying "the master" at work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Winters wonderful, frustrating documentary
Jonathan Winters is really a treasure and it is amazing how many people do not know about him.He is clearly Robin Williams's progenitor, starting out in his television career with sound effects and impersonations, but eventually moving into original characters and amazing improvisations, often based on random objects thrown to him.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars would prefer zero star option
As others have already said it was not funny. It is apparently a special from 1964, complete with the sponsors commercials.the commercials are the highlight of the hour.Jonathan says on more than one occasion that the audience members must be saying "look at him, he's making a fool of himself." I feel sure he was right. The cover has a disclaimer, saying that the dvd is neither endorsed nor authorized by Mr. Winters. That is for a very good reason. It is horrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY DISSAPOINTING
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE, WE WERE VERY DISAPPOINTED, NOTHING LIKE WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.IT WASN'T EVEN FUNNY, NOT AT ALL WHAT JOHNATHAN WINTERS WAS CAPABLE OF.

3-0 out of 5 stars There's got to be something better than this
This consists of two half hour shows in rough, un-remastered black and white, plus a public information film about not dropping litter. It isnot a researched, 'best of' clip compilation as the blurb may suggest. Can't have been hard to out together. The show with Art Carney has its moments, with some genuinely funny moments of spontaneity, though I found Carney slightly over-competitive and annoying. It ends with a strangely sanctimonious, 'serious' speech from Winters about how much he loves spending time with his family. The Andy Williams show is in poor quality b/w video and is not terribly funny.

1-0 out of 5 stars not a pleasant christmas story
Someone bought this 3D DVD for my almost 5 year old daughter. We thought the special effects would be fascinating and they were. However, within minutes of the movie's beginning my daughter was in tears. I won't say why but she found the plot frightening.Several times during the movie I tried to talk her out of watching but she wanted to see what happened in the end.Fortunately the movie is relatively short.Overall, I found the story to be a cynical look at Christmas. As an adult, I think it might be humourous to watch after a hard day of Christmas shopping but I urge caution before showing it to young children. There was way too much animated violence to match the spirit of Christmas.

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars great movie, buy the Sensio or FQHS & see in IMAX 3D
It really is an enjoyable film, Awsome in Imax 3D and at home if you have the Sensio, or field sequential version. The dvd that comes with the Red/Blue "3D" glasses inside doesn't work and is only good for 2D viewing. The 3D effects on the Sensio and field sequential versions work as they should! The field sequential version IS availible on Amazon so get it instead of the Red/Blue Analglyphic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to review this DVD
It is very difficult to review this DVD and give it correct stars. If you consider the 2D version, it would get 4 or 5 stars as the animation and colors are wonderful with a very humorous story. BUT the 3D version is terrible. The 3D is about the worst ever, it never really produces a 3D effect and the red/blue glasses dull and changes to colors making it almost a black and white film. None of the 3D effects really work. The best of them is the falling snow. Often the viewer sees the two images ruining the whole effect and making it impossible to concentrate on the story.

Editorial Review

The problem with live-action movies based on beloved cartoon charactersis that humans are never as flexible, as unpredictable, or just plain as goofyas their animated counterparts. So it is with this blend of animation and live action. Rocky and Bullwinkle remain animated characters (trapped in our reality), while Boris and Natasha (Jason Alexander and Rene Russo), along with their boss, Fearless Leader (Robert De Niro), are transformed from cartoons to human reproductions when they escape from rerun land. They've come to our world to take it over; the FBI springs Rocky and Bullwinkle from the second dimension to stop them. But the writing in Kenneth Lonergan's script lacks the throw-away flair of the jokes that characterized Jay Ward's much-beloved animated series of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Part of the problem is that Russo, Alexander, and De Niro are so obviously working at acting cartoonish, instead of simply being cartoons. And part is that the script rarely comes up with the kind of wonderful wordplay in which Ward specialized. The moose, as usual, gets all the best lines, but they're too few and far between to salvage this underachieving summer film. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ward hangs his head in shame
This movie is the adaptation of the 1960s TV show The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. It was a failed atempt though. This movie is slow and lacks that certian Ward cleverness. However this movie continues the traditional talking to the narrator and know it's a movie. However this movie would be a 3 if not for a fabulousanimation scene in which Bullwinkle surfs the internet to get to New York in order to save Rocky and FBI agent Karen Sympathy. For those fimilair with the show may find this movie a disgrace like I. But those just getting into it or just buying this movie I'd recomend it too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cute - But Inferior to the source
The high point of the film is when Robert DeNiro, as Fearless Leader, confronts Boris (Jason Alexander) over the news the "Moose and Squirrel" have escaped again.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Fun Movie
I remember seeing this in the theater (in retrospect, it seems crowded considering its mediocre box office intake) and really enjoying it. You'd think an update of an animated series as subversive and clever as the orginal Rocky and Bullwinkle would invariably fail miserably, but I think all of the charm of the original and its wit is recreated here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fathers and Sons
"Tell Them Who You Are" is an amazing film. I rented the DVD thinking that I might like it because I am a fan of "Cuckoo's Nest", "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", "Days of Heaven", and other movies photographed by Haskell Wexler. I ended up loving the movie because of the courageous journey Wexler's son (this film's director) embarks on--he uses the documentary as a means to break through his father's macho, gruff, prickly emotional armor. The director flatters his father's considerable ego by making him the subject of this documentary, but Haskel has no idea what he's agreed to. He parades his cocky, opinionated, arrogant self in front of his son's lens and is revealed as the insecure man he truly is. However, the director does not gratuitously exploit this fact. Rather, he continues to observe his father--the son is both cruel and kind. As he "exposes" his father, he also frees him from the emotional cage he has erected about himself (his legendary status in the film industry, for instance). The film is, finally, both a work of art and an act of love. I was moved by "Tell Them Who You Are." (Let me also recommend that you watch the special feature that shows Haskel Wexler's reaction once he has seen the film--it's an incredible thing to watch.)

4-0 out of 5 stars MOVING
I had no idea who Haskell Wexler was before I started watching this highly entertaining and well made documentary. One is quickly informed about the movies he was DOP for, and what numerous actors, directors and producers think of him. Not all favourable by the way. The gist of the movie is the relationship between son Mark (who made the movie) and father Haskell. They are entirely different people with Mark being more conservative to the outspoken and liberal Haskell. But herein lies the universality of the movie - even though we would sometimes deny it, we all strive for the approval and acknowledgement of our parents. You havent finished theexperience of "Tell Them Who You Are" until you have watched Haskell's reaction to the movie in the EXTRAS of the DVD. Very moving!

4-0 out of 5 stars Therapy through film making - ought to have ANYONE exploring their own family dynamics
This is a curious and oddly entertaining little film. The son of a troubled but talented director makes a movie about his realtionship with his father, in the process exploring his father's life and work while also focusing on family dynamics. 1-0 out of 5 stars Yabba Dabba DON'T!
I recently watched The Flintstones, a stone-studded masterpiece from 1994 and, though I can't say I was necessarily surprised by the execution, (I choose my words carefully) of the film, I was interested in the decision to even make such an ill-fated concept of a live action feature.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why do some people hate this
I thought this movie would be terrible, but when i saw it I loved it. It was very funny. I also like Rosie Odonnell as Betty. John Goodman was a good Fred,Elizibeth Perkins was a wonderful Wilma, and Rick Moranis was very good as Barney. But my favorite charactar is the dicta-bird.

3-0 out of 5 stars AN EYE-CANDY ADAPTATION TO A POPULAR CARTOON.
"The Flintstones" is a visually strong adaptation of the animated series, but it suffers the same weak spots that most of the cartoon-based movies have. The TV episodes are 20 minutes long, they have small stories that work well for TV, but a movie is usually between 90 and 120 minutes, so when the writers try to stretch the anecdotes of a TV episode, usually it feels too forced and schematic.

Editorial Review

Now the king of Branson, Missouri, Andy Williams ruled the TV airwavesin the early 1960s, and this compendium of musical numbers culled from theshow's archives features some surprisingly astute musical moments. Among others,Williams performs with Bobby Darin, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby,Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of coursethe catch is that to see all of these stars at the peak of their powers, youhave to watch them performing with Williams. This will allow you to marvel athow it was that an inveterate WASP, who looked like a clean-cut insurancesalesman and sounded like a white-bread Perry Como (if that was possible),became a huge star in the 1960s. It will also give you a glimpse at examples ofthe now long-gone TV variety format of yesteryear, in which an easy-going hostwelcomed guest stars weekly to sing pop songs of the day and do skits (catchJudy Garland teaching Andy how to apply clown makeup in pantomime). 4-0 out of 5 stars Judy Garland on this highlight retrospective
I enjoyed this dvd, but I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include Judy singing. I have seen a clip in a PBS Andy Williams retrospective where she sang an abbreviated version of "Over the Rainbow" with Andy coming in at the end. Her voice was in good shape, albeit a bit husky, and she looked beautiful. Instead of any singing on this disc, she and Andy perform a comedy sketch where Judy attempts to put makeup on Andy to turn him into a clown.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs and a wonderful time capsule
I'm too young to remember his TV show, and I've been kind of lukewarm to Williams' records, other than the occasional brilliant song or single. But he really shines in this hour long special. This is mostly songs with some comedy thrown in, so you're not going to get a lot of sketch humor, but you do get performers like Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim accompanying Williams.Williams more than holds his own with all the performers, and as a bonus he dances with Henry Mancini. You don't get any of his hits other than "In the Arms of Love" and a spooky version of "Moon River" that plays over the DVD menu on an endless loop. My favorite is Williams' duet with Tony Bennett and his solo version of the relatively unknown title song from "The Pawnbroker" which is just excellent.4-0 out of 5 stars Great retrospective--but only 3 or 4 seasons represented
This is an excellent DVD that hightlights Andy's pick of what he felt were some of his best moments during his TV show broadcast from 1962 to 1971. This is excellent viewing material and just plain fun for both those who are starting to get to be familiar with Andy Williams' work as well as those taking a stroll down memory lane. The quality of the picture and sound is excellent and the guests are very talented people. My only disappointment was that maybe Andy could have added other moments from other seasons of his shows--the majority of the clips are from the years 1965 to 1967. I vote this as a BUY; and I would have given it five stars were there more moments from other seasons added. Maybe this calls for a volume two? GRIN ... Read more
