5-0 out of 5 stars Best Basinger
Not many movies are better than the novel they are setting into pictures. Prime example is Eastwood's Mystic River, which is far better than Lehane's novel. LA Conf. is my number two in this list.
5-0 out of 5 stars Is that how you ran the good cop/bad cop?
L.A. Confidential is a phenomenal film.Originally overshadowed by Titanic, it has come to be appreciated as a modern classic.
5-0 out of 5 stars A KNOCKOUT !
It took me several recomendations before I decided to take a look at this film. At first with reservations upon learning the leading roles belonged to a couple of unknown Aussies, one of them (early on) even gives the impression of being nothing but a wimp. Let's just say by the end that impression had changed more than a bit and when the police captain says "I wouldn't want to be him for all the whisky in Ireland" I was in total euphoria.

Editorial Review

From the sun-dappled heartland, a young man (Robert Redford, in soft lighting) emerges as maybe the best baseball player anybody's ever seen. On his way to the majors, he is cut down by an enigmatic black widow (Barbara Hershey) and vanishes for many years. When he reemerges, a silent mystery, he lands a spot with the New York team and begins tearing up the league--he's still the natural. Fans of the Bernard Malamud novel will be dismayed at the pure mythical hokum of this film, but baseball fanatics have been known to watch and rewatch this one; after all, it's constructed as a kind of shrine to the national pastime. 5-0 out of 5 stars "I didn't see it comin'"
"The life we learn with and the life we live with after that."
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest baseball movies ever made.
A movie I watch 2-3 times every year right about spring training time to get myself into that baseball mood. It really gives you that feel for baseball and why people dedicate their lives to it- in whatever capacity. The color and camera work captures the feel of baseball in yesteryear. So much of this story is told without detailed dialogue- a sign of a great movie. And so many words of wisdom - truisms, are uttered so casually that if you miss them, you miss so much of the very essence of this film. Redford is perfect as Roy Hobbs, as is Wilford Brimley as manager of the lowly New York Knights. But Robert DuVall and Kim Bassinger play great supporting roles, as do the rest of the supporting cast members, many who will be familar character actor faces. I never read the book, but know that those who have take umbrage to the license the movie takes with the story and how they present it. If you haven't read the book that won't affect you. What will affect you is Levinson's direction and the feel for the era he creates with the simplicity of the dialogue, the cinematography, and the color and lighting used. You feel like you're in another era. This Natural also contains my favorite quote in movie history, when Glen Close utters, "I believe we have two lives- the one we learn with, and the one we live with after that." That quote embodies this film, and is my credo.A great movie with a great ending, that was almost reenacted in the 1988 World Series with Kirk Gibson's magical game winning home run in game one against the Oakland A's. A must watch for even non-baseball fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Natural
I cannot review this product because I purchased it as a gift for friends. However, I am giving it 5 stars because my friends love watching "Field of Dreams."They have watched it too many times to count. The family recently got a DVD Player and "Field of Dreams" was the first DVD they purchased to watch."The Natural" being in a similar vein will most assuredly be as watched since they love anything baseball related.Personally, I would give it a "5" just for the main character, Robert Redford.

4-0 out of 5 stars SEX GAMES
I love this movie for the blindfold scene in front of the fridge, it is a classic scene very erotic, but for me the movie is a bit slow but nothing that KIM BASINGER can't change, watch her striptease. The soundtrack is awesome. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stormy And Love
9 1/2 weeks, as a frank depiction of the dynamics of sexual power, is a thought-provoking exploration of these aspects of eros. This film reveals the anatomy of a stormy and obsessive love affair between a recently divorced art dealer who is quite repressed and a rich, emotionally chilly stockbroker. The film is distinctive visual and aural textures by the artful direction of Adrian Lyne. ... After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Sean
NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN was a long time in coming for Sean Connery's return. In 1983 when this film was released he went up against Roger Moore's 007 in OCTOPUSSY. I think Connery's film was much better. It was one of the best Bond films since ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. I like it when Bond films take advantage of European locations as this one did. This is one of the better bond films. The music was the only thing wrong with it. I did not hear the James Bond theme at all in this movie.
1-0 out of 5 stars worst Bond movie?
Apologies to those of you who seem to actually like this film, but when I re-watched it recently after not having seen it in ten years or so, I found it to be . . . well, nearly unwatchable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sean Connery returns again as "James Bond" at 52.
Thought that YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967) was Sean Connery's last "Bond" film?Well after they tried George Lazenby in the "James Bond" role in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (1969), they brought Sean Connery back for DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (1971).

Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. 3-0 out of 5 stars A LACKLUSTER BEGINNING TO THE "BATMAN" SERIES!
After seeing the Man of Steel finally fall in 1987's box-office flop "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," Warner Bros. turned their attentions to DC Comics' other popular superhero: the Dark Knight. Two years after "Superman IV," "Batman" leapt to the big screen, with Tim Burton at the helm.
5-0 out of 5 stars ". . . what I say to my victims before I kill them.Ilike the sound of it . . ."
Jack Nicholson's Joker is a performance for the ages - and one to which perhaps more of us should take heed.Egoistic misanthropy and callous disregard for life have exponentially exploded among our species since the great actor's wild parody of the sins of the "Me Generation".To me, the speeches of our nation's political and corporate leaders at times hauntingly echo Nicholson's Joker's now classic harangues - and private corporate armies? Is there really much difference between Blackwater and the "Joker's men"?
5-0 out of 5 stars Still cool
(4.5/5 stars)Exceptional envisioning of the Batman comic book by Tim Burton. Michael Keaton brings an understated disaffection in the role of the billionaire with a disturbed soul and dual personality. Contrast this with the unbridled mania of the character in "Batman Begins;" both are equally effective, though one style over the other will likely appeal to you. Is there any topping Jack Nicholson in his role as Jack Napier / The Joker? Only he can pull off such an exaggerated performance and have it be so fun without ruining a movie. Even though his role is suitably funny, there is a little too much humor overall in the movie. Robert Wuhl's character is especially unnecessarily comical. Also, while Danny Elfman's score is duly heroic and compelling, the music by Prince just doesn't mesh well and is probably not the best choice. Nonetheless, the visuals are stunning, the action is taut and the film vastly entertaining. It is a testament to the film's influence that numerous comic book movies have subsequently used Danny Elman scores (including rival Marvel's "Spider-Man") and molded black rubber suits, though this film also owes much to 1978's "Superman" with its realistic approach and A-list villains. Great stuff. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars At Times Fun, but Forgettable. 38 out of 100
Cellular is a story of a school teacher named Jessica, played by Kim Basinger, who is kidnapped (seemingly for no reason) out of her house after dropping her son off for school. Jessica is thrown into a locked attic where she soon pieces together a smashed phone and dials a random number. The random number she dials reaches a cell phone owned by Ryan (Chris Evans). Ryan proceeds to do everything within his power to save Jessica, and in doing so the mystery as to why she was kidnapped is revealed.
5-0 out of 5 stars terrific movie!
This is one of my favorite movies in recent years. In the film, Jessica (Kim Basinger) is kidnapped and manages to click the wires on a smashed phone to place a call. She reaches beach slacker Ryan (Chris Evans) and manages to convince him that she's telling the truth and to get help. What ensues is a mad rush through downtown Los Angeles as Ryan tries desperately to assist her. The DVD has some good features on it (interviews, scene selection, etc.), and the movie overall was well made. If you are into this sort of movie, I recommend it. You will not be disappointed in the least bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Thriller for the Cellular Age
Cellular is a sleeper hit.A long overdue example of a real edge-of-your-seat thriller that is well-written and well-acted.Great driving and action scenes are complemented by humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars A movie for people with taste and style
Cool World is a great movie full of some really great creativity and innovation, and really deserves some credit especially for it's time. In terms of story, acting, and writing, it does okay, however the real shining points of this film are in the animation and more than anything the ideas and production.
1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this film no stars
This is simply the worst animated film I have ever seen in my entire life, there is nothing to warrant even one star. This film is nothing but a mess of wooden characters, bad animation, and a poorly conceived plot. This film could have been good in the right hands, namely Ralph Bakshi's hands. The studio executives changed the entire film without Bakshi's knowledge and the final result was this animated abortion. The film started good at the begining, Frank Harris being sucked into the "Cool World" and eventually a detective there and that's were the qaulity ends. The film goes back and forth between the cartoonist Jack Deebs in the real world, who is given no detail, and the poorly animated and un-funny "Cool World". Then all of sudden at the finale, Jack Deebs is given a massive dose of character development at the very last minute and actaully ends up being the hero. Yes,this is film is actually that sloppy.I think I need to alert the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, they have obviously overlooked "Cool World" as a great form of torture.

4-0 out of 5 stars COOL WORLD
Hey!, give a movie a break!!!! i myself love this movie.it shows 2 sides of life, and the 2 sides of society. people for real are like this in life, always wanting power, and creating problems, using drugs,alcohol,sex......trying to change themselves physically.....doing the forbidden,so,i dont see why people think the movie was so bad....hey,it could be your next door neighbor!!!!!or a great fantasy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eminem gives us an entertaining masterpiece!
There are many aspects to 8 Mile that I loved! There were no stupid plot twists. The relationships are believable! Eminem plays Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith who has a hidden talent in rap & his friends contuniously incourage him to pursue a rap career. It's hard for Jimmy at first cause he is white & it's hard for him to find someone to be nice to him in that business. It is a cruel world at times & 8 Mile captures that quite well! Brittany Murphy is quite sexy in this role & the best part, unlike Jessica Simpson, she can actually act & she makes her performance more believeable than it could be! Now, 8 Mile might not be everyone's cup of tea cause it is a drama, there is lots yelling & it is a very dark movie. But for me, that's what it makes interesting! I'm not a fan corny movies & this movie is far from that. Eminem is one fine actor & I question why he didn't do more movies because this is one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a while! Rappers in general, I find, tend to be better actors then pop stars/actresses just because the movies they do tend to be darker without the cheesy plot twists & 8 Mile is definitely worth your time!

3-0 out of 5 stars trivial pursuit

4-0 out of 5 stars Eminem
A bit of a padded feel that was only natural given the simple story that had to be stretched to two hours. The part that felt most real to me came early. I attended a black university in a ghetto of Tampa, but then I bicycled home to the Busch Gardens neighborhood. Kinda like wading in the shallow end of the pool at will while Eminem was in the deep end. That's one thing I got from the movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars Moronic
The so-called humor in this embarrassingly awful and unfunny movie is so uncreative and moronic. It is apparently for a demographic of viewers with an extremely childish sense of humor.A three year old will laugh at anything.Every turn of the plot is stupid. This is in the running for the worst movie ever made.I don't trust the taste of anyone who actually was impressed by this horse manure.I hope that Bruce Willis would have the class to turn down a role like this if he was offered it now.I think he is a very good actor. It's a shame what kind of garbage he had to be in, to get his career going.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ever feel that you are in a Dave Barry skit?
If you are familiar with Dave Barry "DAVE BARRY'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO GUYS", you will recognize his formula of starting out with some innocuous statement about a neutral subject and it builds up slowly and logically to make you thing that something totally ridicules is plausible.
5-0 out of 5 stars A COMEDY WORTH SEEING!!!
It has been awhile since I have seen this movie. The first time was in the theatre when it came out with my family. Since then I had seen it at Blockbuster and picked it up for the heck of it. I forgot how funny this movie was. And the most overlooked performance has to be by the late Phil Hartman (Ted Davis). What a comic he was! He had joined SNL in 1986 so I'm guessing this was one of his first movies after joining the show. Bruce Willis (Walter Davis) & Kim Basinger (Nadia Gates) do an equally good job of acting like a couple who are smitten with each other (when they aren't drunk, that is.) Adding to the laughs is Stephanie Faracy (The Great Outdoors) as Susie Davis, Walter's sister-in-law, John Larroquette (of Night Court) as Nadia's ex-crazed boyfriend David Bedford, and William Daniels (Boy Meets World) as Judge Harold Bedford, David's father. This is a great movie for a Friday night. It was just as much fun pointing out the cameos from Billy Vera & Stanley Jordan. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This couple took grieving to a whole different level.
This is another fantastic movie that hadslip through the cracks of greatness due to uncomfortable content. A few recent films have treated the dysfunction attendant upon the death of a child to a loving couple. A movie or two has also touched on the sexual relationship between an older woman and a younger man. `Door in the Floor,' based on John Irving's novel `Widow for a Year,' combines both subjects in a sometimes disturbing, always absorbing screenplay that has a superlative performance by Jeff Bridges and an excellent turn by Kim Basinger.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Don't ever, not ever, never, never, never, open the door in the floor."
2004's THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR was like a moviegoer's fruit smoothie - put in one part divorce story, two parts tawdry affair, a teaspoon of quirky humor, make sure Kim Basinger sleeps with someone, then blend until smooth and thick. It was a great story, and as far as I've heard adapted from a book, which I have not read - so I won't be one to complain on and on about things lost in translation.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Disturbing Portrait of a Family in Pain
John Irving's novels (and the movies made based upon them) often deal with similar themes and story elements--cheating spouses, dying children, loss and its impact upon those left.THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR is no exception, and watching the tragedy unfold as the married couple (Ted and Marion) inflict their wounds upon each other, leaves you with a sick feeling in your heart.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Buddhist Temple
Ok the title of my review may seem odd, but if you ever see this movie you will understand.I tried as a test of wills to watch this movie from beginning to end on at least 3 occassions and I found my self at some point or another contemplating the universe and life in general. I would then snap back to the real world and realize i had missed some half hour or so of the film. So if you are in need of sleep or want to contemplate the sound of one hand clapping this movie is for you

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful evocation of Parisian fashionistas
This is one of my favourite films.1-0 out of 5 stars As Inspector Clouseau might've said, "eet ees a bheumb"

4-0 out of 5 stars wHY IS IT BAGGED BY CRITICS??
Ive seen this remake 2 or three times, same number of times as original, the original is no dispute a great McQueen crime action adventure, but yes, this remakeI feel with the noir fence-wash rinse is a great night in, why do professional critics like Maltin seem to have it up with Attack of the Killer Tomatoes??
4-0 out of 5 stars A good crime getaway film, with some flaws...
Okay, they make a robbery at a dog race track, stealing a lot of cash; enter the Getaway, which is really a film about being double-crossed by your cohorts. Starring Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Michael Madsen, Jennifer Tilly and small role by James Woods as a crime boss, The Getaway is an entertaining film that follows the unraveling plans of Baldwin and Basinger. All roles are well acted, and the script is for the most part smart, but for one moment where they're duped the cash bag... Bad move I won't reveal, but generally speaking, The Getaway moves at a good clip, features two attractive women, a likeable cast, even if they are all crooks...
4-0 out of 5 stars no title
A good, solid, sexy, suspense thriller - all the cliches.James Stephens and David Morrison (St. Elsewhere) were also in it, but I couldn't find his name in the credits.I was pulled in and enjoyed it.From a Jim Thompson novel which I understand had a much bleaker ending. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Dream Of Africa Too!!!!!
After purchasing and reading Kuki Gallmann's best selling book of the same title and having loved it, I couldn't wait to buy and see this movie. This movie is as good as the book and gives great justice to the book. Kim Basinger gives an extremely heartwarming performance portraying Kuki Gallmann. Vincent Perez delivers a great performance as Paolo, her husband and of course, being filmed on location in Beautiful Africa sure makes this a movie worth seeing!! Excellent casting, excellent filming and breath taking scenery! I Dreamed Of Africa gives us a lookinto the life of Kuki Gallmann, which becomes full of trials and tribulations. We witness her personal tragadies, incredible courage and her love for Africa which became her new home. After being involved in a terrible vehicle accident in Italy, Kuki fell in love with Paolo who was the husband of a mutual friend who was killed in the same vehicle accident. Kuki has a son named Emanuele, whom she called Emma. He in turn called Kuki "Pep". It had always been a dream of Kuki's to live in Africa and that dream came true after marrying Paolo. The family moved to a ranch in Kenya named Ol Ari Nyiro in Laikipia to start a life together. At first, Kuki realizes that living in Africa will take some getting used to. Having to deal with strong storms, the local wildlife and poachers turned out to be the least of Kuki's problems. We see her first tragedy in losing her husband, Paolo, in an automobile accident shortly before she was due to give birth to their daughter. We see Kuki's bravery in burying her husband knowing that he will never have the chance to see the daughter he was so anxiously awaiting. Kuki does give birth to a daughter she named Sveva. We see Emma grow up as his facination for snakes grew more and more. This worried Kuki very much. Emma would catch very dangerous poisonous snakes and would keep them in an outside shed. Kuki made her son promise to get rid of all poisonous snakes after she discovered them one day. He did not listen to her. The most heartbreaking part of this movie is when Kuki loses her son. That is a scene that is very hard to watch for you can not help but cry seeing what a mother will do in order to save her son's life. When he was 17, Emma decided to milk a puff adder and was bitten on the finger. A friend found him right away and had to go tell Kuki that her son was dying. Kuki ran into the shed where she saw her son sitting on the floor foaming at the mouth, dying quickly from the snake's venom. She immediately called for help but being many miles away from a hospital, there was not enough time. Emma's last words were..... " I am dying mamma". That was the first time he had ever called her mama and the last time. As the venom took over his whole body and time being against their side, Emma died. That scene was so heartbreaking and so sad as you saw Basinger give an outstanding grieving performance. I don't think anyone could watch that scene and remain dry eyed. So, yet another burial for Kuki but this time, it was her son. Kuki wrote and recited a lovely poem at Emma's funeral. She buried him next to Paolo at the ranch and planted a tree next to each grave. The movie goes on to show us how Kuki got involved in saving the black rhinos from the ruthless poachers by starting The Gallmann Memorial Foundation which exists to this day. After being told by everyone that she should leave Africa, Kuki was determined to stay... for Africa was her home. For anyone who has not seen this film, I strongly recommend viewing it. It is my dream too to live in Africa one day and I guess that's why this movie is so special to me but for those of you who aren't even interested in Africa, this is still a movie worth seeing because it is a true story and is truly touching as we witness what one brave woman had to go through. Kuki is truly an inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Film
This film is a must see. "I Dreamed of Africa" is based on a true story about Kuki Gallman, her new husband Poalo, and her son. The family makes the bold decision to pick up and move to a run down ranch in beautiful Africa in order to change thier lives for the better. Together as a family they fix up the house and live thier lives in Africa. The story mainly centers around Kuki's view of thier time spent in Africa, therefore you see her pain and her perspective of everything she went through to get there and when they get there. The film has a beautiful setting with a breathtaking soundtrack. This film captures the pain and love that Kuki feels over a series of years. The transitions from year to year are very smooth and the lives of the family are easy to follow. As one watches the family go through the beauties of Africa as well as the dangers of Africa one truley begins to understand the importance of their own life . This film made me want to pick
