2-0 out of 5 stars Corny, predictable, contrived, and deceptive (in portraying New York.) I love it!
First, let me say that by quality film standards this is a terrible movie, in many respects. I live to walk on videos of this type with football cleats. But, this movie falls into the "I hated this movie so much, I couldn't help but watch it whenever it was on" category. And now I love it. I don't know what it is about this movie. I tried to put my finger on it many times. I always have and always will hate "Sleepless in Seattle," which is a totally contrived load of crap. But "You've Got Mail" has an undefinable charm to it that forces you to look past it's simplified portrayal of a happy go lucky, skip around the neighborhoods of New York atmosphere. It makes you question why you buy into such sappy dialogue and situations. It's not just because of the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks chemistry, because I hated the despicable "Sleepless in Seattle" and always thought the entire premis of "Joe Versus the Volcanoe" was a joke. But in this movie, contrived as it may be, that interplay between the two works. Though their acting is also hammy at best, I also love the contributions of Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Stephen Zahn and Jean Stapleton. This is one of my guiltiest pleasures. I'll only watch it with the remote on toggle to some type of sports programming in case my friends walk in on me while I'm watching it so I can jump inmmediately to the "Binford Lumberjack Finals," or something like that. But were they to walk in at the end of this movie and find me glossy eyed with a lump in my throat, I'd never hear the end of it. I love this movie. There! I admit it.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I absolutely love this movie. Hanks and Ryan have so much chemistry together and the story is so adorable. I have watched this movie so many times and love it more every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tale.
This movie is very entertaining.I'm not into romance movies and this is not your ordinary romance movie it also contains some comedy. You just get into the plot and all the characters are interesting and entertaining.I've recommened this movie to all my family and friends. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Roman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Jack Nicholson is J.J. Gittes, a private eye in the Chandler mold, who during a routine straying-spouse investigation finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a jigsaw puzzle of clues and corruption. The glamorous Evelyn Mulwray (a dazzling Faye Dunaway) and her titanic father, Noah Cross (John Huston), are at the black-hole center of this tale of treachery, incest, and political bribery. The crackling, hard-bitten script by Robert Towne won a well-deserved Oscar, and the muted color cinematography makes the goings-on seem both bleak and impossibly vibrant. Polanski himself has a brief, memorable cameo as the thug who tangles with Nicholson's nose. One of the greatest, most completely satisfying crime films of all time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to make a detective Movie
This is simply one of the best detective story ever made and Jerry Goldsmith's sound track ( which I also own) is probaby the best sound track. It was his favorite. Jack , Faye & John are at their best.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best in the noir genre
fantastic screenplay, best directing and acting, best casting. a very good classic except some racial slurs off and on. the chinatown was tagged as no-mans-land, a zone-out area in almost everywhere in the world, not just in los angeles or new york. this movie tells it all. a modern 'oedipus' version. mother-wife-daughter-husband-father, a twisted tragedy to the extreme. a very nice timeless treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown..."
Some movies you just appreciate more with age. What I mean is that there are movies you see when you're younger and you don't fully appreciate them or admire how well crafted they are. This was the case with "Chinatown" for me.I saw it many years ago for the first time, and while I enjoyed it somewhat, at the time I thought it was long, slow and dreadfully bleak at the end.Of course, I didn't get the point that that's what "Chinatown" is supposed to be, and that's why it's brilliant.I watched it recently for the second time, and I fell in love with it.Absolute love.

5-0 out of 5 stars I remember Mummy
What a great addition to the Legacy Collection series. As a fan of monsters that were meant to chill, not nauseate, I couldn't wait to acquire this fine collection.Unlike other monster series that just recycle the action it was nice to see that this story unfolded with each film as a running history of the Mummy character.True, the Karloff original was a complete story in and of itself, but the sequel The Mummy,s Hand was a great story on its own and a good start for a new history for the character.
4-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE MUMMY?WHERE'S THE MUMMY?
That's what several reviewers were asking when the original Monster Legacy was released. I know that was a long time ago, but let me attempt to explain. First of all; Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolfman were all interconnected through a series of films. The Mummy was never a part of that particular franchise. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman was a combined sequel of The Wolfman and Ghost of Frankenstein. Which then continued in House of Frankenstein and ended with House of Dracula. Even Abbott and Costello met Franky, Drac, and, Wolfy in one movie. The Mummy and The Invisible Man dealt with A & C separately in two different movies. My Question is, Should Dr Jekyll And Mr. Hyde have his own legacy collection or not? Sorry I didn't give any useful info on this particular set. But there are already several good reviews on this page that does just that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kreepy Karloff - Magnificent Mummy
I purchased a while ago some of the classic Black and White Universal Studio's "horror" films from the 1930s and 40s which Universal released under their special collection called "The Legacy Collection".

5-0 out of 5 stars part of my childhood
I love this movie. I grew up watching grease and grease2 all the time. Yes the acting is not the best but come on it's just one of those movies that just stick with you. I have a 6 year old niece and a 2 year old daughter who love to watch and dance to grease and grease 2 all the time.

1-0 out of 5 stars One Of The WORST Sequels Ever Made.
This is one of the worst sequels ever made, it makes "Friday The 13th Part 2" look like an oscar winner. Dreadful acting, and singing with the same story(basically) and characters as in the first except much better done in the original. This is for kids with no taste in cinema whatsoever only. Stick with the original if you were a fan of it. Avoid this BOMB at all costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS MOVIE
First off to the reviewers below who stated that NONE of the original cast members are back are wrong, you have Frency - Didi Conn, Principal McGee - Eve Arden, Blance - Dody Goodman and Coach Calhoun - Sid Caesar. And yes they do make references to the first movie, one of the main characters, Michael - Maxwell Caulfield is Sandy - Olivia Newton-John's cousin. This is one of those movies that you just love to hate, the songs are so bad that they stick in your head. This movie is just a blast to watch and isn't as bad as most people say it is.Granted it doesn't hold a candle to the first one, but it is a fun movie in it's own right.I just wish we could get some bonus features and interviews, it does look great and sound great in Widescreen and 5.1 surround sound.Give it a chance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Cinematic Musical
I haven't seen a cinematic musical so finely crafted and enjoyable since Singing in the Rain--Chicago is outstanding! Set in its namesake during a female murder spree, the costumes, sets, and atmosphere are right on target. The acting, singing, and dancing are so good chills will run down your spine. Renee Zellewegger is particularly inspired as Roxie, reminding me keenly of Marilyn Monroe. Queen Latifah and the remainder of the cast are equally up to the challenge, bringing Bob Fosse's musical to the screen in all its dark, glamorous glory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever Made!!!!!!!!!!
I am completly OPSESSED with this movie!! So far, I've seen Titanic 8 times, and I have never got tired of it!! This movie deserves 5 or more stars because it has perfect actors, perfect theme song, and the best effort on a movie in years. This movie is way better than those crapy movies that my little brother's opsessed with, like Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and all that garbage. I have a huge crush on Leonardo Di Caprio, and I always kiss him on my poster. I also have him on my desktop on my computer. Whoever hates this movie is a complete Retarded jerk, and needs to get a life. I am so excited because in my chorus class, were singing My Heart Will Go On, and I am so excited!! All I'm saying is, great job James Cameron, and cast, Your movie was a big hit!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Ship, Huge Impact
Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Billy Zane star in this whopper of a movie. You get to see the personalities of each of them, Leo as the adventure seeking good guy, Billy as the pompous arrogant bad guy, and Kate as the uncertain but later passionate and fun loving lady. This film has realistic action sequences, an impactful storyline, and is heavy on the romance. The movie is rather long, but it is very involving and time will fly by.This is the top grossing film of all time, and has won 11 Oscars including Best Picture.A wonderful film.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drown, damn you, drown!!
How could Mr. Cameron take a subject like this and a cast and brig out the worst in everybody?

Mel Brooks's 1987 parody of the Star Wars trilogy is a jumble of jokes rather than a comic feature, and, predictably, some of those jokes work better than others. The cast, including Brooks in two roles, more or less mimics the principal characters from George Lucas's famous story line, and the director certainly gets a boost from new allies (Read more

This dramatization of the tangled history of Apple Computer and Microsoft, based on a book by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, hits enough of the right notes to make its failures all the more frustrating. The script follows the entwined paths of Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates with a pointed sense of the cultural divide between the hip, self-absorbed Apple cofounder and the brilliant alpha geek behind Microsoft's eventual software empire, contrasting the Mac's countercultural underpinnings with the PC's more strait-laced origins. But Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No New Tricks Here.
OCEAN'S ELEVEN was a great heist movie. It was far more entertaining than the original Brat Pack film and included a more upbeat ending. The movie worked on a lot of different levels and though the cast including a huge list of stars, each character had just enough screen time to make the audience care for everyone involved on Danny Ocean's team. The plot of the film was tight and the payoff for the audience was in learning how the heist was pulled off.OCEAN'S ELEVEN was only expected to be a moderate success, but ended up doing quite well.So well, in fact, that they quickly put together plans for a sequel.
1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
The first movie worked because it highlighted how the thieves planned and executed the amazing heist. This one fails because 95% of the movie has nothing to do with showing us a theft. It's like they figured 'we showed a theft last time - so let's focus on the story this time'. That's all well and good except for this movie - the heist IS the story. So in other words they forgot to show us the very movie we went to see. So instead of seeing how these guys work - we get to see lots of junk. Not for a second does the audience believe the Oceans crew is in danger because the story has no substance to it. On the plus side Catherine Zeta Jones is ridiculously hot - so that's great to see. On the down side - Julia Roberts looks terrible (as per usual) but this time she plays the character Tess who plays the actress Julia Roberts!!!??? This whole scene with Bruce Willis is awful and ridiculous. I cant believe they filmed it - let alone wrote it. I half expected the scene to turn into a blooper reel and the director apologizing for trying out this bad idea. Anyway - overall this movie was boring and garbage. I expected to see a heist film that showcased how professional thieves work their trade. Instead I saw a movie that had nothing going for it other than beautiful talent. Hollywood figured we should love this movie because it had style. I guess Hollywood won because they took my money again.
1-0 out of 5 stars An arrogant waste of time
I liked Ocean's Eleven but this movie was just ridiculous.Someone seemed to think that if you get enough big celebrities in one place and try to make it "stylish" you'll have a good film.Unfortunately, the plot, dialogue, and even the internal logic of the plot is just poorly done. The clever banter isn't clever. The plot is slow and dull. And without giving too much away (although you really should pass on this movie!) there is a plot twist involving the Julia Roberts character that is so ridiculous as to be arrogant.Overall, a terrible film and a terrible waste of everybody's time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This Is A Male Version Of A Chick Movie
Nah, don't get bent out of shape, I liked this movie fine, but it just is. Sure it had Jack Black, more cussing than a sailor's convention, was set in a run-down vintage record store, had great music, a cameo by The Boss, and some bitingly dead-on dissing courtesy of Tim Robbins, but this was way too cerebral and emotionally-fueled not to invite comparisons to the sort of films that get deliberately targeted at women. Think about it, it's all dialogue-driven, the main character, well-played by Cusack, does nothing but talk, talk, talk, as he agonizes over every relationship he's ever had, which he can break down and list in order of pain and regret, and it centers around the one person he is convinced he loves. It's got all the makings of a brilliant chick flick!

3-0 out of 5 stars No cult classic but an above average romantic comedy
The movie High Fidelity has gained a cult status similar to that of the book by Nick Hornby while being an above average romantic comedy. Without capturing the wittiness of its source material, as the more recent Hornby adaptation of About a Boy (2002) does, there are good reasons for its acclaim.
5-0 out of 5 stars So,Are You In, or Out?
If you're a single, 30-something guy with a healthy past of screwed up relationships and a song for every experience in your life, then 'High Fidelity' just might make your top 5 list of 'this movie is about me' movies.

    Editorial Review

Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called The Wonders--as in "one-hit wonders." Hanks plays the manager of the group, which includes drummer Guy "Sticks" Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) who works the floor at his parents' appliance store in Erie, Pennsylvania; Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), the talented and temperamental lead singer and songwriter; Lenny (Steve Zahn), the goofy guitarist; and Ethan Embry as a geeky little fellow identified in the cast list only as "The Bass Player." The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record, to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue, to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964--and deserves to be one today. This delightful movie would make a great double-bill with Allison Anders's wonderful Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hideous! 1 star only because there is no lower choice available
This film is so god-awful it makes me sweat with embarassment for my limited participation in enabling its existence by having seen it. TTYD might be an OK film to someone born after the era which Tom Hanks attempts to convey here through cliché and outright quasi-Beatloid parody, but there are films aplenty from the 1960's that pretty much tell the same stale "unknowns-make-it-big" saga with far more authenticity and sincerity, simply by having been made during that time. Not even as believable as a film with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, nor as musically sophisticated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Movie If You're a Fan of Pop Music
I admit to really loving this movie.I read somewhere that Tom Hanks came up with the idea for the script after watching a Beatles documentary.Based on the timing of its mid-90's release, I'm certain it was the Anthology series - which aired in that period on ABC television.Being a huge Beatles fan - and having almost worn out my Anthology DVD set - you can see a lot of the small touches in TTYD taken almost verbatim from the glory days of Beatlemania. As I've read in other reviews, the only real problem with the story arc is the Jimmy character. There's no real evidence of his genius, nor is there a trace of likeability. You also don't accept his "artistic gravitas" (which manifests even while he's still playing in his parents' garage in small-town Erie, PA), because there's not even the slightest hint that he has the goods to back it up.The song that becomes their one hit only did so because it was played contrary to his original concept. This makes the climactic, inevitable ending ring hollow, because at that point you're sort of glad that scowling, sulking and ever-petulant Jimmy is gone.I liked Tom Everett Scott a lot, but Steve Zahn basically walks away with the movie as Lenny - it's kind of a shame he hasn't had more substantial comedic roles over the last 10 years. One of the little details I liked is that they started out as a true garage band, with cheap Sears & Roebuck Silvertone guitars and worn out drums.By the time they reach the middle of their state fair tour, and the record has significantly charted, they're all playing on brand spanking new Rickenbacker's, Fender's and (I think) Ludwig drums. The short scale red Rickenbacker that Jimmy plays is the same model John Lennon used, and in a couple of scenes you can see Jimmy standing on stage aping his head-up, cocksure, wide stance at the mike.

This is a classic band movie. It's very inspirational, engaging, has wonderful music you can sing a long to and definetely makes you want the soundtrack. It's a movie that is short, sweet and sensational. The Wonders rock my socks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Movie
I remember first seeing this movie on video around '83 or '84. Us kids loved it, so did the adults. We laughed and laughed at it. In my opinion, any of the paid movie critics who have dissed it are morons. It is pretty predictable, as are most slapstick movies. Most of the funny comedy routines have been around since the early 20th century, so we already know the punchlines, but funny will always be funny. Just turn on your TV today and you will see the "comedy" that the "critics" love. Give me a good "old-fashioned" comedy over the new junk that they peddle now. ... Read more

Following the success of MAD MAX, director and writer George Miller re-teamed with Mel Gibson to make this follow-up to one of most successful and profitable independent movies in history.Originally titled MAD MAX 2, the movie was retitled ROAD WARRIOR for the American release because though MAD MAX had been a huge success overseas, it hadn't made it beyond art house theatres in the U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Thrillers Of All Time
I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. This movie is frightening, extremely suspenseful, revolting, and, above all, undeniably compelling. Fincher is in fine form regarding the direction of this movie, and Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman (one of the best actors of our time), Kevin Spacey, and Gwenyth Paltrow turn in exceptional performances as the main characters. This is easily one of the best films of the 90s, and any true fan of motion pictures should add this collector's edition to their DVD library.

John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later features Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Change of Pace for John Waters
I first heard of Hairspray a few years ago when Harvey Fierstein was winning acclaim playing the transvestite role on Broadway. I heard of it once again, when I read that John Travolta would be playing that same role in a theatrical version of the film. Around this same time I saw a movie called "Pink Flamingos" which led me to discovering John Waters, which led me to finding this film. "Hairspray" is not Waters' best (in my opinion), but it's definitely a special and funny film that is a far cry from other efforts by Waters. First off, it's his first and only film to have a rating under 'R' (In fact, it's rated PG) and while it still contains a few vulgarities; It's actually a pretty tame movie. The film takes place in the 60's, where hair (and hairspray) was the rage. Equally popular is The Corny Collins Show, a TV dance party that all the kids just eat up. One in particular though, dreams of being on the show and becoming famous. This is Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake, 'Serial Mom')...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Underdog Story
"The Karate Kid" could have been 80s drivel, a nonsensical teen movie with very little redeeming qualities. Fortunately, "Kid" rises far above that, being not only an underdog story like "Rocky" (also from director John Avildsen)but also a companionship story and a bit of a love story.Rumor has it that the screenwriter wrote the script after seeing an article in the local paper about a teenage boy who defended himself against bullies by taking karate.A very simple concept, and yet one that works for several reasons.First, everyone can relate to the underdog story.Daniel's discomfort over moving away from home (New Jersey) to go across country to California, at a very crucial time in his life (high school) is not foreign to any of us.All of us have been in this position, in some form, at one time or another.Daniel is desperate to fit in, in a place where as a darkheaded Italian, he sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb around blonde Californians.A bit stereotypical, yes, but effective. The girl of his dreams is blonde and he meets her on the beach. His arch-nemesis is blonde, "hunky" in the teen sense, wealthy and does all the right things. The complete opposite of Daniel, who rides a bike and whose mom drives an old olive green station wagon with the embarrassing habit of stalling in wealthy neighborhoods. With so much stacked against him, we want Daniel to win.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this movie
This is one of my favorite movies ever.I saw this movie in the theater when I was ten and twenty years later I still love it.Great 80's music too.

3-0 out of 5 stars What Dubyac99 Said
Looking for a family movie to add to the DVD collection, I recalled The Karate Kid. The young boy, the mentor, wax-on/wax-off and some Karate for excitement. Turns out our memory of this movie is 30 minutes of Pat Morita scenes.

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still emotional
This film really stands the test of time-and the famous line: 'I ain't got no place to go' is still strong enough to pull a tear from your eye. It's hard to believe that Debra and Richard didn't get along through the filming of this classic.Hollywood rarely get these romance flicks right, but this one is dead on.Now romance films have to be a comedy. When was the last Hollywood straight romance movie?Richard Genre (the King of romance films: Pretty Woman, Last Knight, Runaway Bride.)is fantasic and Debra Winger never looked or acted better. (except for the that small little film called: Terms of Enderment.) Do yourself a favor and see this movie again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to Make You Cry
A good character study of a boy who grew under the wing of a moral-less father and still had the balls to make something of himself and his life. Richard Gere is hot and sexy as the naval aviator in training. Winger's character can grate on your nerves a bit but you warm up to what her character stands for. I've seen this movie over one hundred times and each time I'm just as interested as the first. I still cry at the ending. Lots of swearing both in dialogue and in the catchy songs. One of the best films of all time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Now, Joyce, put those helmets down...
Teen reporter, feeling dismissed by her journalism teacher because of her gender, disguises herself as a boy to write an undercover piece. Along the way falls in love with her new best friend. Joyce Hyser is totally unbelievable as a man. but she does give us the obligatory tatas shot at the end. And prances around in her undies in the opening credits. And isn't that what 80's teen comedies were all about? Yes indeed ;) JOOTG is an OK, if marginal, example of the genre. You won't feel like you wasted 90 minutes when it's over. Legendary jazz/break artist Tom Scott did the score? Wow. No extras besides the trailer. Print looks nice, but it's another fullscreen rushjob from a studio who couldn't care less about putting quality into their products. Mild recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good 80's flick
This is a great movie but I read one reviewer mentioning Joyce Hyser (terry) being 18. She was born in 1957 making her 28 when she played the role and her 'college' boyfriend was 30. A good movie with some good lines but being 10 years older then most of the high school crowd must have been kind of a laugh on the set. ... Read more
