    Editorial Review

When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A all time great!
"You have brought music back into my home".This is a story about a man, who lost his wife, suffered loneliness, realized the value of his family and embraces his family once again in music and drama, and falls in love with a woman of great culture and life.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL TRANSFER OF A PERFECT MOVIE
SOUND OF MUSIC 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Fox) is the latest digital version of this beloved, timeless, film. The two-disc set features an exceptionally sharp transfer and a rich audio mix but the real treat is the new commentary with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer (this in addition to the late Robert Wise's commentary).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Hills are alive
This musical details the life of a novice nun named Maria. There are people in the Nonburg Abbey in Salzburg that do not like her so the Reverend Mother sends her to take care of the seven children of a Widower Captain Georg Von Trapp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quenching that yearning for learning through entertainment
The Magic School Bus created some of the finest products for instruction, while completely disguising this fact to many of its young learners. Children exposed to the vast array of offerings in the field of science at young ages are still in possession of this information today. The original manner in which the students contribute information via their personalities and curiosity mix with our children's own natural instinctive curiosity about the world in which we live. Topics from this series include concepts as specific as mold and the manner in which it can help and hinder us, to as broad as the vast solar system, and systems beyond. Bugs, Bugs, Bugs is a title uniquely dedicated to the many insects and their many purposes common to our world. The only downside is that the series has apparently long been discontinued.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It
My son got this for his 4th birthday and he watches it over and over.He just loves this series.

    Editorial Review

There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Where's the money. Lebowski?" - "It's uh... uh... it's down there somewhere, let me take another look. "
I won't add to the voluminous praise that already exists in abundance on Amazon that speaks so eloquently of this film.I agree totally with everything written here stemming from a positive vibe, man. This is one of my favorite movies.Certainly my favorite Coen Brothers movie in their comedic body of work, even bypassing "Raisng Arizona" (which I think is a masterpiece as well).
1-0 out of 5 stars The only good part of this movie is when...
...Tara Reid offers a certain favor for a thousand dollars. Other than that, it's a typical Coen Brothers "Look-we're-being-clever" affair. And yet the laughs are few and the "zaniness" rings hollow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
The main character, Lebowski, is a bum of a person living in Los Angeles who spends most of his time either doing nothing or bowling with characters played by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. Suddenly Lebowski's life is changed when he is mistaken for another Lebowski who is much wealthier than he and who as gotten involved with a group of unsavory characters.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the MOST disgusting movie
Is it because I saw the uncorked version that I feel slimed -- or is it just because I am old? Maybe it's because looking at really a lot of naked breasts just isn't my idea of a great time at the movies. In any case, the lines that most moved me were the two or three times when one character gently upbraided another claiming youth for their hijinx: "We're just young guys having fun (or something like that)."The answer: "You're not that young" (and honestly it's not that fun -- most of us dread being guests at weddings).
3-0 out of 5 stars It was O.K.
The most surprising aspect of this film was that such a very average comedy could become such a huge box office hit. While the first hour had a few laughs, the second became bogged down in a sappy romance, and had me checking the "time remaining," on my DVD player. While it wasn't a bad movie, I saw a lot of wasted potential in it. The concept of wedding crashing is funny, I just wanted them to do more with it. For example, the main characters allude to attending a variety of ethnic weddings (Hindu, Chinese, etc.) but we aren't shown much. It would have worked better if they cut the romance a bit, and showed us more of the weddings. The extravagant lies one would have to tell and ensuing complications seem like they would be a rich source of comedy, but are never exploited. Also, Christopher Walken is a wonderful comedic actor (see him on Saturday Night Live as "The Continental" and the music producer for Blue Oyster Cult, to know what I mean), but his talents are wasted here in a humorless, straight role.

4-0 out of 5 stars This movie isn't smart. It isn't great. But it's "fun."
The opening sequence with Dwight Yokum and Rebecca De Mornay is one of the funniest in the film. The rest doesn't live quite up to it. The movie suffers from an improbability problem. I know from working weddings like some they went to, it's not easy to sneak into a wedding, especially high profile weddings with bouncers and giant men standing at the doors looking at your invite!

5-0 out of 5 stars As Time Goes By ...It's Simply One of the Best
I'm no film critic, but I do like older movies, especially Hitchcock, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Humphrey Bogart. Casablanca bears watching again and again. It's wonderful love story, a mystery, and a war movie. Watching Casablanca the first time is an experience to be savored.

I missed this movie in the theaters so when it bacame available to rent my wife and I decided to give it a try. What a delight, I envy anyone seeing this film for the first time. From the wonderful cast, Caine, Duvall, and Osment are in their peak form; to the fine direction and the beautiful cinematography the film is a true treasure. After watching it we immediately bought several DVD's and gave them as gifts to family members and friends. A wonderful mix of coming of age, adventure, and just genuine good fun this is a must see film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent And Gritty Crime Drama!
With so many reviews already posted here on amazon, I really don't think there is any more that I could add, other than to say this is an amazing crime-thriller. From the very beginning, to the very end this is the quintessential mob film of all time. The story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) has already been discussed, I would just like to add that if there is anyone who has not seen this classic, do so. More importantly, it belongs in your DVD collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars These are working guys, living it up and "Earning" at all costs.
Scorcese & Pileggi's masterpiece on the life of Henry Hill as a Brooklyn NY mob wise-guy is great film. While not my favorite Martin Scorsese movie it is a stunning achievement, and one of his very best movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best film of the 90's
GoodFellas is Martin Scorsese's masterpiece, following the life of a gangster named Henry Hill. It charts his way up from working at a mob-controlled cabstand to becoming a member of the gang, and eventually turning to the witness protection program to save his life. The movie is full of unforgettable moments, particularly the famous "Do you think I'm funny" scene. Joe Pesci steals every scene he's in as the murderous psycopath Tommy, and rightfully won the best supporting actor Oscar. This movie contains what may be the best movie sequence ever made: Henry, while high on cocaine, driving around town running a mixture of normal and mob errands (e.g. In narration, he says: I had to stop by Sandy's place to mix the cocaine then get home and check the tommato sauce for dinner...) while being followed by a helicopter. The scene is shot extremely haphazardly, making you feel as though your'e in Henry's place. This movie's greatness cannot be expressed in words; you have to see it for yourself. Also recommended: Miller's Crossing, Casino, Taxi Driver, and The Godfather. ... Read more

In thetitle story, Miss Frizzle's class gets a clever tutorial on the wonders ofrecycling when Wanda makes a regrettable wish to abolish it forever. Faster thanyou can say "tin can," the Friz whisks her students into the future to discoverthe perils of a world without recycling. Dolly Parton lends her voice in a guestappearance while several holiday tunes add seasonal mirth. In the otherepisodes, Phoebe and friends receive a hands-on lesson about the extremeconditions of the desert and how native plants and animals not only survive, butflourish. Then, it's on to the rainforest as the students celebrate Earth Dayuncovering the interdependent relationships of cocoa trees, midge flies, and mudwallows. An informative Q&A session follows each 30-minute story to reinforceconcepts and clarify fact from fiction. Yes it's true and people didn't think it could be done, Buzz & Woody back for a second adventure. In this film Woody finds out the real reason why he was made, he was a character on a TV show and Woody is one of the last remaining dolls made for that TV show.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pick for all
Toy Story 2 is just as good as (or even better than) Toy Story 1.Great animation, very funny and teaches valuable lessons without the sadness. Some of the animated movies have scenes that are hard to watch, for example the opening scene in Finding Nemo or the beginning of Tarzan. My son watches those scenes in horror (and so do I).Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 1 have such an original storyline that is so endearing, and it is such a well rounded movie that it is an excellent pick for all.I also like the fact that the toys don't sing and dance as in most animated movies, and yet the music is excellent.I particularly love the song (composer: Randy Newman) when Buzz realizes he is just a toy and can't fly and tries to fly out the window.Me and my son play along to that part! ... Editorial Review

This first movie from the Discovery Channel favorite opens with a plot of international intrigue over a downed satellite, but within four minutes Steve Irwin is belly flopping after a baby croc on the outback floor. Steve and his nerves-of-steel sidekick wife, Terri, are asked to relocate a cattle-chomping crocodile before it's shot by a local rancher. This same reptile happened to swallow the intelligence-gathering device that fell to earth, and so begins the goofball premise of this lark of a movie. The feds believe the Irwins are appropriating their classified info, and the Irwins think they're running from poachers. Quibblers may object to Irwin's frequent interruptions to introduce a bird-eating spider or paw through croc dung, but Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Epitaph To The Life of the Crocodile Hunter
I only saw Steve Irwin's show a few times.I saw him a few times on the talk show circuit and found him an engaging personality.Unfortunately, I was drawn to this film by Steve's untimely passing.I was hesitant to view it for two reasons.I didn't want to dislike this film.I also didn't want to praise this film effusely because of Steve's death.Fortunately, this is a terrific family film. The best part of the film is that Steve is an engagingly energetic cheerleader for wildlife. Not only is Steve witty but he is incredibly knowledgable about the wild kingdom.I'm not a viewer of the Discovery Channel but I was on the edge of my seat as Steve relates the lifestyles of varied creatures.Steve's wife, Terri, makes for a fetching sidekick. The only drawback to the film are lesser stories about the CIA trying to intercept a missing black box in the Outback and a portly female rancher trying to bag a crocodile whose been devouring her livestock. These story threads, however, are ultimately woven into the story for a satisfying conclusion. If you have reservations about viewing this film because it may make you sad never fear.Ultimately, "Crocodile Hunter-Collision Course" is a celebration of a rich and full life and that will bring on a smile.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful way to remember the legendary Steve Irwin
If you were a fan of the late, great Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, then Collision Course is a must-have for your collection. The movie isn't bad...not the best movie ever, but it's certainly entertaining enough, and if you enjoyed watching Irwin's shows, you'll have fun with this movie. Perhaps the best part is all the special features on the disc. There are several documentaries and deleted scenes that are just terrific and yet another way to immortalize Steve Irwin forever. Kids will no doubt appreciate this film too, and I don't think a single profanity is ever uttered in it. The price Amazon lists it for is decent, but I found mine shockingly enough right after Steve Irwin died in the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart. Definitely a steal at that price! With Collision Course, you have a wonderful memento of the Steve Irwin we all loved so much. Enjoy!

I will never watch this film. I've always been a fan of Jack's movies. However, I will never watch this film simply because I know that I will never measure up to the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars With a Punch
I was always under the impression that this film was a comedy. I was very mistaken, but I enjoyed the film anyway. Aside from that false judgement, I was biased against the movie because of the era in which it was made. As a classic film fan, it is sometimes difficult not to resent some of the films that helped Hollywood progress away from the traditions of the classic era. However, any way you look at this movie, it is hard not to recognize the quality of the story and of the actors' performances.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magic Mixed with Science
The DVD is excellent in teaching scientific facts, for instance, my 3 year old loves the episode on bats, and has learned much from it. (She corrected me when I said bats were blind.) I also give it high marks beause the teacher does not always answer the children's questions, but instead leads them to a situation where they can discover the answers themselves through interaction and experimentation. My only negative comment is to get to the situation always involves some "magical" transformation. It just seemly highly ironic to juxtapose scientific explanations with impossible magical transformations, but the kids love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
My son and daughter love this magic school bus dvd.they watch it all the time.he is four and she is two.also, they love the human body dvd.well worth the money.

I got this for my kids because I think the Magic School Bus is great.Fortunately, the kids like them too!Good elementary explanations of everyday things that get kids asking questions, AND listening to the answers.Very enjoyable and easy to watch. These aren't really my favorite episodes, but they are good! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars the lost movie
I barely made it through this 2 hr+ mess and was anxiously awaiting its end. Hoffman and Murray have no place or reason to be in the story, which wanders all over the map trying to be compelling. The most enjoyable parts are the club stage scenes in the beginning of the movie, but then there is a unexplained bomb explosion during one of the performances... thus ending any reason to continue watching. The remainder is a self indulgent, overwrought fantasy trying to tie together family, revolution, romance, oppression and culture; with a distinctly unsatisfying and amateurish result.
3-0 out of 5 stars Overlong Look at the Cuban Revolution Through a Native Son's Eyes Hamstrung by a Weak Script
It's been attempted several times before, that is, a sweeping epic of the last days of the Batista regime and the beginning of Castro's Cuba in 1958-59. In hindsight, it is a fascinating period full of intertwining personal and political passions. However, despite the dramatic ripeness of the period, nobody has done a completely successful job in capturing the fulsome emotional fervor (probably closest is Julian Schnabel's "Before Night Falls", which shows the revolution through the weary eyes and brutalizing experiences of gay poet Reinaldo Arenas). With his dramatic feature film directorial debut, Andy Garcia attempts more of a Zhivago-style approach with this lumbering 2005 film, but he get seriously hamstrung by unmemorable characters and an incoherent narrative structure that seems to rely on a series of genuinely striking images and emotional outbursts to tie the plot threads together.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful movie !!!
I enjoyed every second of this beautiful movie. Everything about this movie is just excellent. Andy Garcia is such a talented person, he is not only an actor, now a director, a composer and a musican. I like the story, the cinematography, the music and the acting. Anyone who has to leave the country for whatever reason will find this movie speaking to their minds. Does anyone know when the soundtrack will be released? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie about the bonds of womanhood.
This movie is a light harted romantic comedy on the surface. However, after watching it so many times that I could recite the lines by heart, I think there is much more to this film than meets the eye.Personally, I have studied acting and film, and I am also a writer, so from my personal experience with these things---I feel confident in saying this film is so much more than chick lit! The book by Alice Hoffman is considered chic lit, however it and this movie speaks more deeply to the way women treat one another. How judgemental we women actually are of each other, take the word witch out of it and replace it with anyother not so nice word, and women are much more likely to call each other that than men are!
5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB!
This movie is so touching and magical. Once I've started watching it (can't even count the number of times I've watched it), I find it is hard to press the STOP button. Buy it and you won't regret and plus, I think Charmed "stole" the gist of this movie, if U catch my drift *wink*

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favs!
I can not even tell you how many times i have watched this movie. This is probably the most natural performance I have ever seen from Kidman. She really seemed to fit the part. This movie can do no wrong with Sandra Bullock, a kickbutt soundtrack, and a well written story. Definitely one you will watch over and over!

1-0 out of 5 stars unhappy ending
purchased the dvd and received it quickly - when trying to view the dvd I found it has no audio - I contacted the seller NO RESPONSE - I then went through Amazon and still NO RESPONSE. I am very disappointed and sad to say this has put a sour taste in my mouth. I can say I will never purchase anything from CHILLOUT ZONE again as it only takes but a minute to respond to an e-mail and they can not even to that....

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply one of Disney's Best
This has got to be at least in the top three of the many animated movies the Disney studios produced. So many great characters are in it - Cleo, Jiminy Crickit, The Good Fairy, Gepetto, Honest John, Monstro and of course Pinocchio himself. So many good hummable songs too including"An Actor's Life", I've Got No Strings to Hold Me Down, and the most famous "When You Wish Upon A Star."The story is original and the plot exciting without being too scary for little ones and all ends happily.Don't miss the ride at Disneyland either!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the great disney films
Made back when Disney made truely great animated films. I love the old Disney stuff and Pinocchio is one of the best. Disney was and is the king of this film genre, especially back when this one was made. NO animation done today rivals the Disney cartoons of the era this film was made. Warner Brothers, Dreamworks, Pixar and any of the other animation studios of today will never touch the quality and imagination of early Disney films. I don't like computer animation, so maybe I'm biased in that respect. This film is pure art. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Salem witch hunts are given a new and nasty perspective when a vengeful teenage girl uses superstition and repression to her advantage, creating a killing machine that becomes a force unto itself. Pulsating with seductive energy, this provocative drama is as visually arresting as it is intellectually engrossing. Arthur Miller based his classic 1953 play on the actual Salem witch trials of 1692, creating what has since become a durable fixture of school drama courses. It may look like a historical drama, but Miller also meant the work as a parable for the misery created by the McCarthy anti-Communist hearings of the 1950s. This searing version of his drama delves into matters of conscience with concise accuracy and emotional honesty. Three passionate cheers for Miller, director Nicholas Hytner, and costars Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent film of a great play
If you can believe it, the first play I was ever in was The Crucible, when I had just finished sixth grade. We had a rather progressive director for the YMCA summer drama workshop. Her philosophy was that this was not theatre for children, but theatre by children and we did the last couple of scenes of this great play.I got to play Judge Danforth and my little brother was the Reverend Mr. Hale.I doubt any of our cast fully understood the play's ramifications then, but some of us understood enough to learn more, to read the entire play, and to try out for more plays when the chance came.
5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and well made
I'm not sure why I ordered this movie, given that usually I don't like too much suspence, but maybe the historical aspect of it drew me. In any event, I'm happy I've ordered it--it is very well made, the acting is unnervingly convincing, and the story makes one be VERY grateful for not living in that village at that time! The analogy to present time abuse of power, mass histerias and tendency for 'witch hunting' (though no longer in the literal sense, still very much in other finger-pointing-to-save-one's-own-face and terrorizing others to join or else...as well as pompous know-it-alls) is eerie. Ideas and locations change, but the human flock-factor seems to be an ever present enemy...
4-0 out of 5 stars Not the definitive version, but ultimately moving and powerful
The Crucible is considerably simplified from the play. Despite Arthur Miller handling the adaptation himself, so much of the historical detail and motivation for the witchhunts is dropped to get the narrative moving faster that at the end of the day the whole thing seems to have been reduced to a simple case of a woman spurned and a bad case of mass hysteria. Some awkward performances in the first half don't help either - Bruce Davison is shrilly ineffective, Daniel Day Lewis still seems to be doing Hawkeye, Joan Allen does her serious face again and the jury's still out on whether Winona Ryder is giving a convincing performance as an unconvincing liar or and unconvincing performance as a convincing liar. Yet the strength of the material shines through and suddenly, by the halfway point, you suddenly realise that you are completely gripped by it and that most of the performances have improved immeasurably once Paul Scofield has arrived to up the ante. Indeed, by the end the piece is genuinely tragic and moving (that said, I still maintain that the real hero of the piece is not John Proctor but Pastor Hale - the only character to realise his terrible error and to have the courage to publicly try to remedy it, however hopelessly). Excellent supporting performances from Karron Graves and, surprisingly, George Gaynes, although the houses seem a little too large for Puritan stock. Definitely a film of two halves, but worth seeing for the sheer power of the latter half.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not about sports
This is my first Magic School Bus tape and I am disappointed. It is not about sports but about friction, how the body system works together etc.If you are looking for an educational tape about sports this is not it.Also the teacher and students talk real fast in the tape making it hard for very young learners.I ordered the one on the human body and space adventures I hope they are what they say they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our faves!
Both my boys (5 & 8) Love this one! They laugh so much over the frictionless baseball game !

4-0 out of 5 stars More fun with the Friz
This is a much better collection than I was expecting! The segments are on baseball (friction), the Teacher-athalon (cardiovascular health), and (only loosely sports/games related) artifacts.I'm anxiously awaiting the DVD release of a collection with "Inside Ralphie", and the one on cardio-health is an ok substitute while we wait. For some reason, it seems like several of the most popular episodes are yet to be out on DVD... I wonder why?None of these are particularly outstanding, but they are all quite good and easy to watch, repeatedly, as toddlers & preschoolers tend to want to do.The manufacturer thinks this is for kids 6&up I believe, but I would say it may be more entertaining for maybe the 4-5 crowd. My almost-2 and almost-4 year olds watch them and probably don't get most of the science, but it still encourages them to ask questions and they do pick up on a fair amount of the "simpler" content. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Somebody has to go to jail, Ben."
In the film 'National Treasure,' Nicolas Cage plays Ben, a character who must save the genuine Declaration of Independence from being stolen before an assembly of greedy treasure hunters can get their hands on it. It is believed that the Declaration of Independence contains a secret treasure map, but the task of getting to it without getting stopped by security personnel is going to be far from simple. I would say that this is a pretty decent film that is worth seeing at least once or twice. It is from Disney, has a PG rating, and contains plenty of watchable action sequences and educational references. If you are a fan of this film and own a Sony PlayStation Portable, then you are in luck, as the film is available on the system's UMD format, making it accessible to 'National Treasure' fans on the go.
5-0 out of 5 stars YAY BILL!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars All in all, I really liked it
I mean, it's not a movie that I would typically choose to watch myself, but my SO and the kids wanted to see it, so I agreed. It's kinda cute, little romance, little action, some bad acting by Nicholas Cage (but what else is new there?) and a little humor. Over the top in some places, but that's part of its charm.
