Editorial Review

The third season was the charm for one of HBO's gold standard series, which earned its first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series to go along with its Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series and Best Actress (Sarah Jessica Parker). The writing is as sharp as ever, with more trendy product placement than a Bret Easton Ellis novel and ribald banter that's a cross between the Algonquin Round Table and the Friars Club. One of this season's two principal story arcs concerned hapless-in-love Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and her pursuit of a husband; enter (if only...) Kyle McLachlan as the unfortunately impotent Trey. Meanwhile, sex columnist Carrie has a brief but memorable fling with a politician who’s golden, but not in the way she anticipated. She then sabotages her too-good-to-be-true relationship with furniture designer Aidan (John Corbett) by having an affair with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who himself has gotten married.

"Do we need drama to make a relationship work?" Carrie muses at one point. Sex and the City needs drama to make it work, and Parker and Cynthia Nixon (as career woman Miranda), this ensemble's better half, give the show its pulsating heart as they wrestle with commitment and, in the episode "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," sadder-but-wiser breakups. On the lighter side, the sexual dalliances of "rude and politically incorrect" Samantha (Kim Cattrall) provide great fodder for comedy. Like I Love Lucy, the series benefited from a brief change of scenery with a three-episode jaunt to Los Angeles, where Carrie and company encountered, among others, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Vaughn, Hugh Hefner, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. At its best, to quote one character, Sex and the City is "sharp, edgy, brutal at times, always a little juicy." It may be "very New York," but the sex and relationship issues it tackles are universal. For its devoted fans, the release of this 18-episode, three-disc set is, to quote Gellar's clueless Hollywood junior development exec, "chick flick big." --Donald Liebenson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Truly unfunny sitcom
This show is on TBS and I finally had the chance to see it. I didn't like it. This show is all about women over 30 having sex and laughing about it. It's a pointless show. If you want funny. Buy Family Guy or Friends or the simpsons. But not this show

1-0 out of 5 stars Take note BEFORE you buy
HBO Video plans to release a "super-premium" Sex and the City collection before Christmas. Although all seasons for the show are now available, according to an HBO spokesperson the premium set will feature the complete series along with additional content and DVD extras not available on the originals. Also look for new disc art and lavish packaging that is being developed with "an eye for the collector."

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting better and better
I am absolutely addicted to Sex and the City, the third season was so wonderful and I love the fact that now I can watch it over and over again. Just the accessories make the whole season great. Carrie has like what...10 Dior saddle purses?? How f***ing great is that?
The DVD's are great with the synopsis and the "quotes from each episode". "I'm scootin' in heels" is one of my favorites.
This is abviously my guilty pleasure, so I recommend it to everyone.

Editorial Review

O Santa, where art thou? Patty Loveless's big voice almost upstages such stately hymns here as "Away in a Manager" and "Silent Night." That said, this is one of 2002's most satisfying Christmas albums regardless of genre. Rich with harmony vocals and deft acoustic instrumentation, the CD shines bright with unexpected arrangements ("Little Drummer Boy" sounds like an old-time country tune transplanted to Ireland), while words cannot describe the simply beautiful sounds of "Carol of the Bells" and "Silver Bells," rendered with fiddles, Dobro, strumming guitars, and spirited singing. Spread the joy and buy a couple extra for the in-laws and neighbors. --Martin Keller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Christmas Treasure!!!
Patty Loveless' "Bluegrass & White Snow" Christmas album is a great gift for anybody this holiday season, whether a fan of country music or not. Here is how I rate each song in a 1-5 scale.

1) Away in a Manger- nicely done in a traditional, bluegrass fashion. (4 stars)

2) Silent Night- I like Patty's rendition of this Christmas classic. Trisha Yearwood is featured on backup vocals on this song. (4 stars)

3) Joy the World- great and having Emmylou Harris on background vocals adds to this song's appeal. (5 stars)

4) Carol of the Bells- the instrumental version of this song by the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble is excellent. (5 stars)

5) The First Noel- I love Patty's version of this song. Trisha Yearwood on background vocals enhances its greatness. (5 stars)

6) Little Drummer Boy- My FAVORITE song on the album!!!!! An AMAZING duet with Rebecca Lynn Howard. Their voices blend awesome with each other, making it my all time favorite version of this song. (6 stars!!!!!)

7) Silver Bells- I love Patty's version of this song. Patty gives this song a more down home feel, making it extra special. Amy Grant & Vince Gill are great on backup.(5 stars)

8) O Little Town of Bethelem- Patty did a good job on this song. (5 stars)

9) Christmas Time's a Coming- a nice bluegrass Christmas tune, makes you appreciate the coming of Christmas even more. (5 stars)

10) Santa Train- Co-written by Patty and her husband, Emory Gordy Jr. An uptempo Christmas song. Sounds great! (5 stars)

11) Christmas Day At My House- another song written by Patty & Emory. Tells story of the joy inside the household on Christmas day. (5 stars)

12) Beautiful Star of Bethlehem- I love this song. Patty's alto range can be seen in this song. One of the cd's most soothing songs. (5 stars)

13) Bluegrass & White Snow- My second favorite song on the album!!! Proves Patty's great songwriting skills. I love it. Dolly Parton on background vocals blends great with Patty's voice and makes it a true bluegrass Christmas classic. Love the ACAPELLA ending to this song.(6 stars)

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars.

This album is definitely worth buying and being added to your collection of Christmas albums!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas CD.A must have!
I bought this CD when it was first released and this year when the holidays rolled around again, I couldn't wait to play the CD while baking, wrapping gifts and such. It has become one of my most played holiday CDs. It has great songs that are wonderfully done. I love Santa Train...it's a great festive song and it is a kid pleaser! Especially for little boys that love trains like my son does. And it has a nostalgia feeling that reminds the adults what it was like to be so excited about getting to see Santa Claus. Star of Bethlehem and Silver Bells are beautifully done. The background vocals are outstanding on all the songs. And I really enjoy Carol of the Bells by the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble. Since I live in TN...I have been lucky enough to hear them play in person and they are a very talented group of musicians.
I highly recommend this CD to your holiday music collection. Even if you don't regularly listen to country or bluegrass music.

5-0 out of 5 stars POSSIBLY THE BEST CHRISTMAS CD BY A COUNTRY ARTIST!
Through the years country artists have released Christmas CDs for their fans simply because it is the thing to do.They rehash standards and classic carols we've heard thousands of times by thousand of other singers.

Loveless stands out from among the other country artists (and those who call themselves country but which the music does not reflect...)with a CD that demands to be played over and over again!!When it comes to singing country, nobody does it better than Loveless and combine that with Holiday fare and one has a combination that cannot be beat.

This offering is possibly the BEST Christmas CD EVER put out by a country artist but listen for yourself and be the judge. The entire CD is as wonderous as the moonlit sky on a cold winter night, Patty's voice is as crisp as the new fallen snow and that's not surprising because when it comes to music, Patty don't mess around!!She delivers the goods...and how!!!!! ... Editorial Review

The fourth season of Sex and the City is just as smart and sexy as ever, mixing caustic adult wit and sharply observed situation comedy on the mean streets of Manhattan, though this time the quartet of singleton city girls must endure even tougher combat in the unending war of love, sex, and shopping. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) finally seems to have found her ideal life partner when she is reunited with handsome craftsman Aidan (John Corbett). But can their relationship survive trial by cohabitation? Meanwhile Charlotte (Kristin Davis) seems to have both her dream Park Avenue apartment and a solution to her marital problems with Trey (Kyle MacLachlan). But when the subject of babies comes up, everything starts to unravel for her, too. It's not just Charlotte who has baby issues either: after what seems like an eternity of enforced sexual abstinence Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is horrified to discover she's pregnant. And as for the sultry Samantha (Kim Cattrall), she's on a quest for monogamy, first with an exotic lesbian artist, then with a philandering businessman, with whom to her utter dismay she just might have fallen in love. --Mark Walker ... 5-0 out of 5 stars In my Opinion, the Best of SATC!
I recently got hooked on SATC when i received the first season as a gift.i was skeptical, i had never seen an episode while it was playing on HBO and always commented that it was all hype.i was wrong!I can't get enough!i now own all the seasons and watch them religiously.I would have to say that although i love watching the season where it all started and the final season, season four is the best.It has sooo much going on that is monumental in all the character's lives.I can watch these episodes over and over again from the fight between aiden and big, to the pregnancy, to the proposal to the season finale that includes a BIG move and a birth. This season is a classic and if you were to purchase only one season i reccommend this one.You WILL NOT be disappointed

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Dates

There has never been a more perfect show to watch for couples who are in intimate relationships than SATC. It is a divine mix or funny and sexy and great dialogue and pretty people. It makes an exquisite first feature in a double feature, especially with other erotic movies like "Last Tango in Paris" or "Goddess Worship" or "New Sex Now."

Thank heaven for Sex and the City.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best original cable programs ever...
Based on the bestselling novel by Candace Bushnell, the HBO original series Sex And The City took the television world by storm following its release in the summer of 1998. Following the exploits of four young and educated female friends living and working in New York City, the show revolves around the various relationships and life problems experienced by each member of the group. Sporting an experienced and talented cast, the show has developed a strong, borderline fanatic following...

Sarah Jessica Parker (the de facto lead character of the show) stars as Carrie Bradshaw, a popular sex columnist for a local newspaper who travels in numerous Manhattan social circles. Carrie is engaged in a tempestuous on-again, off-again relationship with a mystery man always referred to as "Mr. Big". The young urban professional shares her life with three best friends who have similarly interesting jobs - Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon), a lawyer tired of being single given the societal ramifications; Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), a promiscuous publicist who enjoys non-exclusive relationships; and Charlotte McDougal (Kristin Davis), an art museum curator who is relatively less open about her sexuality... Together, the women seek each other's advice on the ever-present and varying predicaments in which they find their romantic relationships...

The Sex And The City (Season 4) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "The Agony and the 'Ex'stasy" in which Carrie celebrates her 35th birthday. The milestone gives cause for the various women to reflect - Samantha is happy with her various sexual liaisons, Miranda realizes that marriage does not equate with happiness, Charlotte loses her appetite for Trey following a late night incident, and Carrie is disappointed when her dinner party bombs, but she perks up when Mr. Big arrives unannounced with a bottle of Champagne... Other notable episodes from Season 4 include "Defining Moments" in which each of the women defines a new set of boundaries in each of their various relationships, and "Baby, Talk is Cheap" in which Samantha meets a man who enjoys baby talk in bed and Charlotte and Trey decide against trying to conceive after attending a dinner party with their married friends and children...

Editorial Review

It was a short but sweet fifth season for Sex and the City, as HBO's resident comediennes found themselves affected by forces beyond their control--the pregnancies of both Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie) and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda). A truncated shooting schedule to accommodate the actresses forced this season to be reduced to a mere eight episodes, and indeed, you can tell both actresses are expecting. (Carrie's wardrobe became more outlandish and more concealing than usual.) Still, the actresses and creators forged ahead, creating a handful of episodes that if short in content were long on emotion and laughs. Whereas the fourth season found all four grappling with various relationships, the fifth season focused on the perils of being single, with a new intensity lacking in the previous sexcapades. Carrie and Miranda wrestled with their solitary lifestyles, albeit with new attachments--Miranda had new baby Brady and single motherhood, while Carrie found herself in the world of publishing as the author of a real-life book of her columns. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) wondered if she'd ever find another man, while Samantha (Kim Cattrall) finally got rid of the one that had been vexing her far too much, hotelier Richard (James Remar). If the season as a whole felt less than the sum of its parts, those parts were some of the best comedy in the show's history, from Samantha's anointment as the "Michiko Kakutani of vibrators" to Carrie's stressful, one-degree-from-fiasco book launch party. (And fear not, Chris Noth's Mr. Big does pop up now and again.) The season's climactic episode, "I Love a Charade," found all four at the straight wedding of a seemingly gay pal (Nathan Lane) and contemplating their future with a wry, bemused tone. It was one of the series' best episodes ever, equally touching and funny, and grounded the show in an emotional maturity that announced that after all their wild travails, these women had truly grown up. --Mark Englehart ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Only 4 because it was short...
but the writing and humor are just as good as any other of the seasons. Well worth watching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Season 5....Hear me out.
I understand fully the disappointment of the shortened season, however, i dont feel that this season, although only 8 episodes, is no worse than any of the others.Granted i would have liked to see alot more of SATC in this season, however, this is still an entertaining.I also join the other reviewers with the disguist atthe price of this season, only about half the episodes of the other seasons, and it is still full price.my advice is this, if you are a true SATC lover you need this season, i feel the characters gain more depth in this season, especially miranda with the birth of her child brady.I dont have too many complaints becuase i bought this season for about $23 from an independent seller on amazon.com, i suggest you do the same!it's definitely worth buying if you can find it for less!
