Angels in the Outfield by Walt Disney Home Video Average Customer Review: DVD (01 July, 2003) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $13.04 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This effects-heavy, 1994 remake of the1951 film starring Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn is all computer-generated pizzazz, with none of the charm or imagination of the original. Aimed squarely at children this time, the story focuses on a boy who gets some divine intervention on behalf of his favorite ball club. Christopher Lloyd plays the head angel, and Danny Glover is good as the team's manager, but the real star of the film--for better or worse--is the software that makes a glowing, celestial presence on the field seem real. --Tom Keogh ... My Giant by Castle Rock Average Customer Review: DVD (29 September, 1998) list price: $14.98 -- our price: $13.48 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This Billy Crystal vehicle suffers from too much sentimentality that competes with the outrageous physical comedy, but still manages to be funny enough to be worth a look. Crystal plays a shallow sports agent on tour in Eastern Europe, smarting from the separation from his wife and kid, when he literally crashes into a discovery that might resurrect his career. He finds a giant in a rural town (NBA Basketball player Gheorghe Muresan) and takes him back to America in the hopes of exploiting his find, but soon discovers that loyalty and being true to the things that are important to him are what really matters. It's the physical comedy and the contrast between the titanic Muresan and the diminutive Crystal that sustains the movie beyond its premise. Crystal's personality and Muresan's genuine nature make My Giant rise above its gimmicky nature. --Robert Lane ... Read more Features Reviews (10)
Maybe advertising is to blame, but I was lucky enough to not hear much about it when it was released. With no expectations in mind, I thought the movie was great -- and Billy Crystal does a decent job taking on a dramatic role. Muresan does surprisingly well with his role as well, concidering the horrible screen talents of other famous-sports-players-put-in-movie types. I would recommend this to anyone...as long as they don't expect Crystal in a stand-up-comedic routine.
It's adult comedy-drama, and a pretty good one. Crystal, the ultimate cynic, slowly becomes best friends with his giant, the ultimate innocent. And there are actually a fair amount of laughs along the way. It helps to know that this picture was inspired by the late Andre the Giant, who worked with Crystal on "The Princess Bride." Giants' lives are never easy, and that's why this picture has to be serious as well as fun. I have the feeling this picture may play better on video. If you like funny-sad pictures, check it out. ... Biker Boyz (Widescreen Edition) by Universal Studios Average Customer Review: DVD (02 September, 2003) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When it's revved up to maximum rpm's, Biker Boyz qualifies as an adequate knockoff of The Fast and the Furious. Both films were inspired by magazine articles about speed-freak outlaws on the streets of California, only this time the nitrous-enhanced "rice rockets" are of the two-wheeled variety, and Smoke (Laurence Fishburne) is the reigning "King of Cali," leading a predominantly African American subculture that schedules illegal motorcycle races with high stakes and potentially lethal outcomes. Kid (Derek Luke, the promising newcomer from Antwone Fisher) is the latest challenger, facing off against Dogg (Kid Rock) and others before coming to terms with his own familial destiny. Following his incisive HBO debut, Dancing in September, director Reggie Rock Bythewood approached Biker Boyz as a modern Western, but it's really just a strutter's ball with polished chrome and tailpipes. Meagan Good, Lisa Bonet, and Vanessa Bell Calloway provide sexy feminine wisdom, badly needed in a movie that's all flash and precious little substance. --Jeff Shannon ... I would suggest this film to people who liked "The Fast and the Furious." They're the same type of exciting action-packed dramas.

Deliver Us From Eva (Widescreen Edition) by Universal Studios Average Customer Review: DVD (01 June, 2003) list price: $19.98 -- our price: $17.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review At a time when theaters were clogged with insipid romantic comedies fora predominantly white audience, Deliver Us from Eva offered a smart andsassy alternative. It's another variation of Shakespeare's Taming of theShrew, beginning when Ray (James Todd Smith, a.k.a. LL Cool J) accepts a$5,000 challenge to seduce Eva (Gabrielle Union), an alleged man-hater whodominates her three sisters and the men in their lives, who are desperate to be"delivered from Eva." It's a sitcom plot from start to finish, with no realsurprises. What lifts Eva from its potential doldrums is the sensiblenegotiations that emerge between the would-be lovers, and a sharp screenplaythat allows Ray and Eva to arrive at a mutual understanding that's richer andmore mature than most comedies would bother to allow. By giving its charactersan opportunity to show their truly attractive colors, Eva is delivered tous, claws retracted, and ready for love. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more Features Reviews (27)
This is suprisingly a very amusing film. I went into the movie with rather low expectations. However, the film is very satisfying, except for the formulaic ending. One thing that works for the film, is they loveable, and attractive characters. The film and dialouge gets a little goofy in some spots, but all around the film is pretty funny. I found myself smiling alot, and chuckling as well. The performances are also good. Gabrielle Union plays Eva well, even though at times she tends to overact. LL Cool J also is good as Ray, and he has a certain charm about him that I've never really noticed before. At the end, things get a little crazy, and at times stupid, but the overall effect of the movie is positive. "Deliver Us From Eva" provides a good time, but not much more than that.
This movie will have you laughing from beginning to end...you'll shed a few tears, and ultimately cheer loudly for true love to prevail. DYB ... Read more Asin: B00005JLI6 |
